CITY OF CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA
Monthly Report
Public Works Department
October 2017
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council Members

SUBMITTED BY: Mike Branson, City Forester

APPROVED BY: Chip Rerig, City Administrator

OCTOBER 2017 FORESTER REPORT

Carmel Beach:

The City removed the wood-burning fire pits in early October due to high tides and air quality concerns related
to the northern California fires.

North Dunes:

In the North Dunes habitat restoration area staff and biologist Joey Canepa reviewed the restoration progress
made this year and outlined priorities and timelines for more work to come later this year.

Trees:

City Public Works/Forestry staff, Forest and Beach Commissioners, and members of the public participated in
the 2017 Arbor Day event in Forest Hill Park. There were about 20 participants and interested visitors who
planted twelve (12) new native trees and fourteen (14) native shrubs along the eastern edge of the park near
the childrens playground. A gravity fed drip irrigation system was also installed to water the new plantings.

Public Works/Forestry staff and on-call contractors removed ten (10) dead trees and are continuing with work
on orders for an additional 37 trees and associated stumps. John Leys Tree Service continues to water 86
trees planted by the Friends of Carmel Forest. West Coast Arborists pruned approximately 75 trees under their
new contract for additional tree work.

Mission Trail Nature Preserve:

Public Works/Forestry staff met with biologist Nichole Nedeff and tree contractor Andrew Tope to review
completion of the invasive plant removal project near the Flanders House in Mission Trail Nature Preserve.
The work has been scheduled for late November to minimize impacts to the nesting Dusky-footed woodrats in
the work area.

The Friends of Mission Trail Nature Preserve held their monthly work day on October 7th clearing trails of
overgrown vegetation.
