SECTION A
1. Attempt all of the following questions: 10 x 2 = 20

(a) The input signal vi to an op-amp is vi = 0.03 sin 1.5x 10 t. What can be the maximum
gain of an op-amp with slew rate of 0.4 volts/s.
(b) Draw the circuit diagram of an integrator and find its output.
(c) What do you mean by slew rate and CMRR of an op-amp.
(d) Draw Hybrid model and T-model equivalent of NPN transistor.
(e) Explain Bakhausen criterion.
(f) What are the conditions for operation in triode and saturation region of NMOS and
PMOS transistors?
(g) An amplifier has a mid-band gain of 125 and bandwidth of 250 KHz. If 4% negative
feedback is introduced, find the new bandwidth and gain, also find the feedback ratio
when the bandwidth is restricted to 1MHz.
(h) Draw the circuit of colpitts oscillator and also write its frequency and condition of
maintaining oscillations.
(i) What is the principle of crystal oscillator?
(j) What are the internal capacitances of BJT?

SECTION B
2. Attempt any five of the following questions: 5 x 10 = 50
(a) Explain inverting amplifier and also derive an expression for the closed loop gain under
the assumption that the open loop gain is finite.
(b) Do the analysis of series-series feedback amplifier to derive gain, input resistance and
output resistance.
(c) Draw the circuit of an RC phase shift oscillator using op-amp and derive frequency and
condition of oscillation for RC phase shift oscillator.
(d) (i) Explain Hartley oscillator.
(ii) Differentiate between DMOSFET and EMOSFET.
(e) Do the analysis bias dc biasing circuit of the NPN transistor to derive Q point and of
self stability factor.
(f) DO the small signal analysis of MOS differential pair to determine differential and
common mode gain.
(g) (i) An enhancement type NMOS transistor with Vt =0.7 V has its source terminal
grounded and a 1.5 V applied to the gate. In what region does the device operate
for a) VD = 0.5 v b) VD = 0.9 v c) VD = 3 v.
(ii) Explain the construction and working of N type enhancement MOSFET.
(h) (i) Draw input and output characteristics of common emitter amplifier.
(ii) State the properties of an ideal op-amp.
SECTION C
Attempt any two parts of the following questions: 2 x 15 = 30
3 Do the small signal analysis of common emitter amplifier with emitter resistance do
derive input resistance, voltage gain (from base to collector), overall voltage gain
(source to load), open circuit voltage gain and output resistance.
4 Explain the effect of finite loop gain and bandwidth on circuit performance. Also define
input offset voltage and input offset current.
5 (i) Explain all four feedback topologies with their block diagram.
(ii) Explain the operation of LC tank circuit.

Section-A

1. This question consist of short answer questions. Attempt


all parts. All parts carry equal marks. (210 = 20)

(a) What is Op-amp? Give its equivalent circuit.

(b) For NMOS transistor, write the drain current expression


for all its region.

(c) Draw a high frequency T model of n-channel MOSFET


incorporating output resistance.

(d) Draw the circuit diagram for CB amplifier.

(e) Calculate and for a transistor if emitter current is


10mA and collector current is 9mA.

(f) Define input offset voltage of MOS differential pair.

(g) Explain why voltage divider biasing is preferred.

(h) Define Unity gain frequency.

(i) Draw a large-signal equivalent circuit model NPN


transistor, incorporating the output resistance.

(j) Give the Barkhausan conditions to obtain sustained


oscillations.

2. Attempt any FIVE questions. All questions carry equal


marks. [105=50]

(a) (i) Define and give the significance of Slew rate and
CMRR. For an op-amp having a slew rate of 60 V/
s, what is the highest frequency at which a 20V

peak to peak sine wave can be produced at the
output?

(ii) Describe the characteristics of an Op-amp. Draw


the circuit diagram of difference amplifier using op-
amp and calculate the differential gain (Ad), common
mode gain (Acm) and differential input resistance (Rid).

(b) (i) Describe classification of output stage power amplifier.


Describe the methods of biasing for class AB power
amplifier.

(ii) What do you mean by cross over distortion.


Describe how can it be overcome.

(c) Describe the construction and operation of N-channel


enhancement MOSFET. Describe the role of substrate
(the body effect) in MOSFET.

(d) Draw the high frequency equivalent circuit model for the
MOSFET and list all MOSFET internal Capacitances.

(e) (i) Give the circuit for CC amplifier and calculate Rin
and Rout for the CC amplifier.

(ii) Draw the circuit diagram of CB amplifier and calculate
expression for short-circuit current gain with T-model.

(f) (i) Discuss the various internal capacitances for BJT. A


particular small geometry BJT has fT of 5 GHz and C
= 1pF when opertated at IC = 0.5mA. What is C in
this situation? Also find gm. For = 150, find r and f.

(ii) Draw the circuit diagram of a Wien-bridge oscillator


and derive an expression for the frequency of
oscillations.

(g) (i) Explain the operation of MOS differential pair with


differential input voltage. Also calculate the range of
input differential signals.

(ii) For the active loaded BJT differential amplifier let


I = 0.8mA, VA = 100V and = 160. Find Gm, Ro, Ad
and Rid.

(h) (i) Design a series shunt feedback amplifier and derive


expressions for Af , Rof and Rif.

(ii) For the Colpitts oscillator, derive an expression for


the frequency of oscillation.

3. (a) Explain the effect of finite open loop gain and bandwidth
on the circuit performance. Calculate the frequency
response of closed loop inverting amplifier.

(b) Explain the working of BJT as an amplifier and as a


switch with the help of neat diagram and necessary
equations.Also calculate the amplifier gain.

4. (a) Discuss a common- source amplifier, draw its ac


equivalent circuit and obtain expression for its
terminal characteristics.

(b) Describe the operation of class B push-pull power


amplifier giving its circuit, also obtain its efficiency.

5. (a) Draw the NMOS differential amplifier with a common-


mode input signal and calculate the common Mode Gain
and CMRR. Also explain the effect of RD mismatch on
CMRR.
