Lesson idea implementation:

Students will be paired up and given supplies before the video begins. Students will first watch my video about
magnets and hopefully learn specific traits that magnets have. During the video there is an interactive part
that requires students to test a few magnetic items. During this time, I will pause the video and allow the
students to test each item to test if it is magnetic. I will ask the class and provide feedback during this time. As
homework I will ask students to test magnetic objects at home such as cotton balls, door nobs, etc. and take
pictures with a device.
The next day will be a BYOD (bring your own device) day where students will bring their technology and
documentation to the class. If a student does not have a device that can take pictures then iPads will be
supplied. Each student will create a short 10-second iMovie mentioning an original item that they found to be
magnetic. I will help students by 1st pre-downloading the iMovie app on each device then walking them
through how to add an image and audio clip to the iMovie, each clip will be emailed to the teacher (myself)
then I will create a larger iMovie filled with everyones mini clips. This lesson should take approximately 3
science blocks over the course of 3 days.

Importance of technology:
Multimedia is an important tool for this lesson because it gives students the chance to create a movie
independently and then see it used in a larger teacher-created film. The use of multimedia gives the students a
new and exciting way of learning about magnets. Without multimedia use the students would not be exposed
to new technology.

Inspiration (optional):

I borrowed most of the video from the following: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXCeuSiTOug
I borrowed the explanation of the magnet from this video.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:
Internet safety of the children is always a priority in my classroom. In order to minimize the risk for myself I will
be providing credit for all my images used in my video. In order to minimize the risk of students I will not be
requiring any internet interaction during this lesson. After students have completed their mini-movie I will be
emailing the video to myself. Once the large video composed of everyones mini film is competed by me, I will
be uploading to my blog, but I will not include any private information of the students. I will also respect all
requests of the students parents that do not want the students work to be shown online.
