Kinematics of Particles

1- The position coordinate of a particle which is confined to move along a straight line is given by s
= 2t3 -24t + 6, where s is measured in meters from a convenient origin and t is in seconds. Determine
(a) the time required for the particle to reach a velocity of 72 m/s from its initial condition at t = 0,
(b) the acceleration of the particle when v = 30 m/s, and (c) the net displacement of the particle
during the interval from t = 1 s to t = 4 s.

2- The velocity of a particle which moves along the s-axis is given by v = 2 4t + 5t3/2, where t is in
seconds and v is in meters per second. Evaluate the position s, velocity v, and acceleration a when t
= 3 s. The particle is at the position s0 = 3 m when t = 0.

3- The acceleration of a particle is given by a = 2t 10, where a is in meters per second squared and
t is in seconds. Determine the velocity and displacement as functions of time. The initial
displacement at t = 0 is s0 = 4 m, and the initial velocity is v0 = 3 m /s.

4- The acceleration of a particle is given by a = ks2, where a is in meters per second squared, k is a
constant, and s is in meters. Determine the velocity of the particle as a function of its position s.
Evaluate your expression for s = 5 m if k = 0.1 m1s2 and the initial conditions at time t = 0 are s0 =
3 m and v0 = 10 m /s.

5- A ball is thrown vertically up with a velocity of 30 m /s at the edge of a 60-m cliff. Calculate the
height h to which the ball rises and the total time t after release for the ball to reach the bottom of the
cliff. Neglect air resistance and take the downward acceleration to be 9.81 m /s 2.

6- The acceleration of a particle as it moves along a straight line is given by a = (2t - 1) m/s 2, where t
is in seconds. If s = 1 m and v = 2 m/s when t = 0, determine the particles velocity and position
when t = 6 s. Also, determine the total distance the particle travels during this time period.

7- The velocity of a particle traveling along a straight line is v = (3t2 - 6t) ft/s, where t is in seconds.
If s = 4 ft when t = 0, determine the position of the particle when t = 4 s. What is the total distance
traveled during the time interval t = 0 to t = 4 s? Also, what is the acceleration when t = 2 s?
Rectilinear Kinematics: Erratic Motion
1- The particle travels along a straight track such that its position is described by the s-t graph.
Construct the v-t graph for the same time interval.

2- The motion of a jet plane just after landing on a runway is described by the at graph. Determine
the time t when the jet plane stops. Construct the vt and st graphs for the motion. Here s = 0, and
v = 300 ft/s when t = 0.

3- The race car starts from rest and travels along a straight road until it reaches a speed of 26 m/s in
8 s as shown on the vt graph. The flat part of the graph is caused by shifting gears. Draw the at
graph and determine the maximum acceleration of the car.
A sack slides off the ramp, shown in Fig., with a horizontal velocity of 12m/s. If the height of the
ramp is 6m from the floor, determine the time needed for the sack to strike the floor and the range R
where sacks begin to pile up.
