1. Introduction
Architecture is the only discipline that could portray the culture and tradition of any country,
city or town. In view of this fact, there have been developments in the way the symbolic
content and associative meaning ascribed using architecture by different culture through ages
in history.

It is evident from pre-historic period that in the process of architectural development

one predominant element that stands for portrayal of the purpose, content and characteristics
is the entrance gateway design that is in practice widespread for a religion, culture, trade,
commerce, invasion of territories, marking of territories and habitation.

Turning the pages of history of Entrance Design there will be a definite purpose and
content for it. The design shall stand to show the status of the person who develops the
setting, it could signify the power of the person or the entire place, and it could sometimes
support certain cosmological belief system that prevails in that culture too.

To state a few examples our gateway of India structure stands for certain events that
happened in the British regime. But it has the potential to stand and establish as the image for
the country and it could represent the entire nation through its design elements, style,
characterization and composition. Likewise, India gate in New Delhi represents certain event
and stands as a memorial to our soldiers. Therefore, it is clear that such structures have the
potential to build the image for a greater content and purpose through its design, composition
and material usage. Nevertheless, the entrance design could be a powerful element to build up
the image of the buildings it serves.

2. Significance of the study

The present architectural development for technical institutions in Tamil Nadu is

rapid with high technological advancement and material innovations. Consequently, the
growths of such institutions seldom have unity of intention, spirit of order, sense of
relationship at the building level and the site level. In this situation it is right time to take
stock on the cause for the development of the image of the institution. Perhaps, one such
definite parameter of measuring the image of the institution is by studying the design of

entrances and its elements whether it could build up the image of the institutions through the
following aspects of the design:.
Associative value
Connotative meaning
Symbolic content

3. Objectives of the study

1. To identify the design elements of the entrance that promotes the image of the
technical institution.
2. To indentify the degree of capacity of the elements in Building the image.
3. To evaluate the image Factor of the entrances by the perception of the users.
4. Impact of the entrance image on the surrounding settings and their economic growth.
5. To Assess the Benefits of such changes to the institution.
6. To develop Architectural design guidelines for image Building.
7. To recommend the elements and Building materials for image Building for entrances.

4. Scope of the Research

The study explores the design elements for the entrances of the technical institutions
in and around Tamil Nadu. On how the design elements stands in Building the image of the
institution through its composition, spatial organization Forms, order, characteristics Features
of the entrances.
In this study only the elements of design at the plan level Faade level and overall
composition is evaluated for its potential in promoting the image with the perceptual survey
of the users.
This study includes the Technical Institutions that are ten to fifteen years old situated
in the city limits and along the NH also.
This study ends up by making an analytical study on the potential of the design
elements and its traits the Building the image and provides design guidelines for Building
image through entrance design.

5. Method of study
This study involves two phases. In first phase the physical elements and their
characteristics that draw attention as stated by Kevin Lynch for image of a setting like
dominance, intensity, form, simplicity, size, color, texture and legibility are assessed for the
entrance design of the study area and tested for correlation for image of the Institute.
In the second phase the correlated elements of the first phase is evaluated using Berlynes
collative properties method in order to assess environmental and aesthetic preference of the
design elements and its correlation for arriving at the image of the Institute.
for the above process data collection will be done through visual survey, questionnaire survey
and expert opinions to arrive at the data base for the analysis.

5.1. Research gap

Previous studies on Technical Institutions have been limited to the main Building
Faade, its organization and infrastructure facilities only there is no attempt made so for to
study the entrance design elements and its impact for Building image for the institution the an
analytical manner.
Therefore this research is unique and significant in contributing to the existing volume
of research about the Technical Institution with this dimension and Architectural values

5.2. Research Hypothesis

1. Entrance design elements are positively related with image of the Institution.
2. Entrance design elements are positively related in increased admission for the
institution.
3. Image of the institution is positively relevant to increase the strength of high profile
Faculty.
4. Image of the institution is positively related to increase in values of surrounding
setting.
5. Image of the institution is directly related to imparting Quality education.

6. Conclusion
This study would conclude by revealing that the image of the institution depends on
the entrance design elements supported through its data analysis and surveys conducted
during the study and demonstrates the potential of certain design elements in enhancing the
image of the Institution through its composition and material manifestation
From this study it will be established that the Architectural design of the entrance has
impact not only on the institution but also on the surrounding settings and finally in
augmenting the quality of education imparted.
