1. Introduction
Architecture is the only discipline that could portray the culture and tradition of any country,
city or town. In view of this fact, there have been developments in the way the symbolic
content and associative meaning ascribed using architecture by different culture through ages
in history.
Turning the pages of history of Entrance Design there will be a definite purpose and
content for it. The design shall stand to show the status of the person who develops the
setting, it could signify the power of the person or the entire place, and it could sometimes
support certain cosmological belief system that prevails in that culture too.
To state a few examples our gateway of India structure stands for certain events that
happened in the British regime. But it has the potential to stand and establish as the image for
the country and it could represent the entire nation through its design elements, style,
characterization and composition. Likewise, India gate in New Delhi represents certain event
and stands as a memorial to our soldiers. Therefore, it is clear that such structures have the
potential to build the image for a greater content and purpose through its design, composition
and material usage. Nevertheless, the entrance design could be a powerful element to build up
the image of the buildings it serves.
entrances and its elements whether it could build up the image of the institutions through the
following aspects of the design:.
Associative value
Connotative meaning
Symbolic content
5. Method of study
This study involves two phases. In first phase the physical elements and their
characteristics that draw attention as stated by Kevin Lynch for image of a setting like
dominance, intensity, form, simplicity, size, color, texture and legibility are assessed for the
entrance design of the study area and tested for correlation for image of the Institute.
In the second phase the correlated elements of the first phase is evaluated using Berlynes
collative properties method in order to assess environmental and aesthetic preference of the
design elements and its correlation for arriving at the image of the Institute.
for the above process data collection will be done through visual survey, questionnaire survey
and expert opinions to arrive at the data base for the analysis.
6. Conclusion
This study would conclude by revealing that the image of the institution depends on
the entrance design elements supported through its data analysis and surveys conducted
during the study and demonstrates the potential of certain design elements in enhancing the
image of the Institution through its composition and material manifestation
From this study it will be established that the Architectural design of the entrance has
impact not only on the institution but also on the surrounding settings and finally in
augmenting the quality of education imparted.
