HIGH SCHOOL

Subject Course description

The main focus of High School English continues to be on reading, writing, speaking and listening. However, due
to the fact that learners are bi-lingual there will be an added focus on basic grammar skills, spelling and
corrective techniques within the four disciplines to improve general communication functioning.

At High School level the focus becomes very dense on integrative learning with the content defined largely by
the English Canon on Literature, Social Sciences, Art and Music and even Math integration. Learners will engage
with historical texts from the Anglo-Saxon Period, early American Literature, through to modern 21st Century
literature, all the while keeping a strong focus on academic skills such as reading, writing academic essays,
encouraging strong vocabulary and accurate grammar, listening, understanding the importance of visual media
and acquiring bi-lingual traits of fluency and communication abilities. Therefore, the final years in Senior Phase
ENGLISH
learning are multi-pronged and learners need to be encouraged through creative usage of content, movies,
essays, discussion, games and process to reach the full extent of the requirements expected from them at this
level. The object is to prepare these final year learners for University and for the world on the outside so that
they are able to use their critical thinking, problem solving strategies and communicative skills to their
advantage outside the realm of heavy scaffolding and teacher support. The aim to get them interest in life
across all the subject domains enabling a curiosity of the world around them through integrative, differentiated
and in accordance with the vision and mission statement of the school.

ALGEBRA Mathematics provides the conceptual basis for the structure of many things around us. This course is an
extension of the Algebra curriculum. Topics that were first introduced in before will be built upon and applied to

problems that require higher order thinking skills. Additional topics will also be introduced in a variety of
methods, including self-discovery activities, group project and presentations, and teacher led class discussions.
Algebra builds a foundation of mathematics for those students going on to PreCalculus. Along with many
colleges, a majority of careers require a successful completion of an Algebra course. Fundamental skills of
mathematics will be applied to such topics as functions, equations, probability, exponential
relationships, sequences and series, quadratic, polynomial equations, and concepts and includes the study of
trigonometric functions. Technology will be used to introduce and expand upon the areas of study listed above.
Throughout this course, students will develop learning strategies, critical thinking skill, and problem solving
techniques to prepare for future math courses and college entrance exams.

PRE-CALCULUS
All of the precalculus topics in this course are integrated throughout the text, according to function typelike,
algebraic functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, and trigonometric and inverse trigonometric
functions. This function-driven approachcovering precalculus topics before covering calculus topicsis
repeated throughout the course and also review of basic algebra, which can be covered quickly and how use all
these method to model and solve real life problem.

In this course we will start from one of the main concepts of calculus which is limits and how to find it
CALCULUS graphically , numerically and algebraically after that we will use limits to start a new concept of calculus which
is differentiation ,which is an important tool to find the instantaneous rate of change after that we will link
differentiation to a very important concept of calculus which is integration which is essential to be used as an
inverse operator for differentiation and also helpful way to find the area under the curve , we also will connect
all of these concepts to real life problems and all of that is considered as basics of calculus to prepare them to
collage calculus later.

Drama was introduced in 2017 2018 as an elective for G11 students. As it was the students idea to introduce this elective
the school decided to let the learners claim ownership of their course and course description. The students decided to
DRAMA
formulate an idea around a theme for a dramatical piece of their own creation that will ultimately be performed for their school
and graded by year end. Danah has created a Drama room which facilitates this free style learning approach and endeavors
to give the learners a creative space for exploring their own themes and group dynamics. Should this idea prove successful,
Danah will undertake to follow up with this elective in future. It is our first experimental workshop and we are proud and
excited to see how learners achieve their own goals and purpose within this elective.

The course for music is for G11 and G12 only. The students have never been exposed to the subject before. The course is
designed to enable students to begin the platform of reading music, understanding beats and tempo; applying scales and
chords and using these basic skills for beginner performance standards. The Music department will be using the Virginia
Standards and apply them as best as possible to fit into a schedule for the year. The focus will be on getting learners to read
and write musical notation; to apply their theoretical new knowledge to learning an instrument. Danah has a small department
with percussion, guitar and a keyboard. These instruments will be used to define the standards and apply them. The focus is
also for learners to appreciate music as an language and an art form. By the end of Grade 12 learners will have
MUSIC
accomplished standards that allow them to perform with confidence and a skill level to apply knowledge to playing an
instrument in public and for performance. Learners will be exposed to different types of music and music from different
cultures and countries so that overall there is a clear appreciation and value placement on the way music is presented and

differentiate primary and secondary sources. When reading scientific and technical texts, students need
to be able to gain knowledge from challenging texts that often make extensive use of elaborate diagrams
and data to covey information and illustrate concepts. Students must be able to read complex
informational texts in these fields with independence and confidence because the vast majority of
reading in college and workforce training programs will be sophisticated nonfiction.

The main idea of this course for Grade 10 is to start them on a course of critical thinking and analysis. Learners
at this grade should need to be able to assess past historical events and how they engage with the modern
world that we live in today. Learners need to be able to compare and contrast major historical events in
relation to current world affairs and in so doing, interact with History as global, attentive and world class
citizens who share in a common understanding of our world and how we have been, and are shaped by the
HISTORY past, present and indeed into the future. The course content will align with English skills writing, reading,
