North Central performed
its annual Christmas concert,
Songs of the Season, on Dec.
1 and 3 this year. The concert
featured both traditional and
contemporary styles of music
under the direction of Larry
Bach, dean of the college of
fine arts at North Central.
We have some very big fes-
tival music with brass, organ,
piano and percussion [with]
some traditional Christmas
carols and Christmas songs
and a song in Spanish, Bach
said.
Hope for Dinner
The gospel in action at North Central

Since 2014 North Cen-
tral has participated in Hope
for Dinner, an outlet of the
non-profit organization Ven-
ture, to help provide food and
medical supplies for people in
need around the world. This
year the money raised will
give food and medical sup-
plies to the people of Somalia.
The African nation of Soma-
lia is no stranger to large-scale
food shortages and is current-
ly going through one of the
largest and longest famines
it has faced in years. Lack of
food and clean water has also
resulted in widespread disease
and the need for medical atten-
tion. There are currently over
six million people starving and
in need of medical help in the
country.
Caring for the poor and
oppressed is not just philan-
thropy, its the gospel, Paul
Hurkman, executive director
of Venture, said. Hope for

The Concert Chorale, Wom-
ens Chorus and Festival Cho-
rus performed during Songs
of the Season. The diverse se-
lection of songs and interlude
performances kept the audi-
ence engaged throughout the

choir in singing two classic
Christmas carols during the
concert as well.

For one week each year, the
students and faculty of North
Central are encouraged to
trade their lunch in the caf-
eteria for a plate of rice and
beans, donating the monetary
difference to help feed peo-

By trading a single meal for
a plate of rice and beans, Pi-
oneer Foods donates the pro-
ceeds to Venture who can turn
each donated meal into 10
meals plus medical supplies
for people in need.
This year the event ran from
Monday, Nov. 13 to Friday
Nov. 17. Although the event
has finished at North Central
for this year, Venture is still
accepting donations from peo-
ple that feel compelled to help.

ally fun to start seeing it take
has provided over 60 thousand
meals for people in Myanmar
and Thailand. This year they
set a collective goal of one
hundred thousand meals. This
years meals will be going to
help the people of Galkeyo,
Somalia who were impacted
by the famine.
Enactus, the student-led
business and entrepreneurial
group on campus, stepped up

responsibilities of Hope for
Dinner on themselves.

Bach has funding goals for four ar-
eas: the With One Voice Energizing
Neighborhoods program (WOVEN),
technology upgrades and expenses,
the desire to bring guest artists and
teachers to North Central and student
mission trips.
Bach noted that last year few of
the Lindquist Sanctuarys 900 seats
North Central College of Fine Arts hosted its annual Songs of the Season performance on December 1st
and December 3rd.
Solidifying best practices within
the enrollment office was a primary
goal as well as creating efficiency and
focus within enrollment. McDonald
oversaw several offices on campus
and worked with them to accomplish
these goals including admissions, fi-
nancial aid, marketing, multicultural
and community engagement and uni-
versity database administration.
Another goal was to turn the
ship, McDonald said. That was
accomplished this year, but it was
accomplished by implementing [best
practices and efficiency]. We wanted
to get enrollment in a positive direc-
tion where enrollment actually ticked
back up.
McDonald credits past leadership
for decisions made that have now set
North Central up for continued future
growth in the area of enrollment.
It takes a long time to make a
change from a Bible college over to
a comprehensive liberal arts universi-
ty, McDonald said. Higher educa-

The Concert Chorale is set to travel
to Spain during winter break in 2018
from Jan. 26 to Feb. 5. This trip ful-
fils part of North Centrals mission

tance of building brand awareness for
North Central starting with the Twin
Cities including ensuring there is a

McDonald and his family relo-
cated to Southeastern University in
Lakeland, Florida in late November.
He will be overseeing the process of
building a graduate school at the uni-
versity.
Andrew Denton, vice president of
university relations, announced Mi-
chael Price, MBA, as the new chief
enrollment officer in a notice to the
North Central community on Novem-
ber 27. Price assumes the position on
Dec. 4.
The churches the chorale will serve
at value community outreach. The
churches hope a visiting American
group will attract an audience who
may otherwise not be interested in
attending regular church activities,
Bach explained.
Were a mission-driv-
en school, were a mission-driven
church, and I think people should use
whatever talents they have in a mis-
sion sort of a way, Bach said.

Phillipps Hall
HVAC replacement
work on schedule
Future solutions to be
identified and implemented

Work being done on Phillipps Hall
following the discovery of mold in
the HVAC system is on schedule and
the whole process should be com-
plete by summer 2018. Mold was
found in the east wing of Phillipps
Hall during summer 2017 causing 90
students to be relocated to Zimmer-
man House and Mensing Hall for the
fall semester.
According to Jay Vetter, director
of faculties management and Todd
Monger, executive director of student
development there was no health risk
to students.
North Central contracted a me-
chanical engineer to investigate the
possible causes for the mold. Vetter
believes the most likely cause was
humid conditions caused by a com-
bination of the showers and open
windows. Along with cool pipes and
the ducts from the air conditioning,
this presumably created condensation
leading to mold growth.
North Central received recommen-
dations from the mechanical engineer
on how to prevent this from happen-
ing again in the future. North Central
is also working with their contractors
on how to implement the suggested
solutions. They are continuing to
work on solutions that will be appli-
cable to students. One recommended
solution is to increase the gap at the
base of some doors to increase the
amount of airflow when doors are
shut. North Central is also consider-
ing changing regulations regarding
North Central continues plans to update the HVAC system in
Phillipps Hall.

The work on the HVAC system is
being done in three phases. The first
phase of replacing the HVAC units on
the east side of Phillipps Hall will be
completed before Christmas break.
The HVAC units on the west side of
Phillipps Hall will then be replaced
during Christmas break. Implement-
ing additional solutions will likely be
completed in the spring or summer of
2018.
Incurred expenses of the repair in-
cluded demolition, replacement of
the units, and building repairs. Addi-
tional costs were put towards an en-
gineering study and subsequent steps
taken to reduce the likelihood of hav-
ing this issue happen again.
Approximately 75% of the proj-
ects expenses will be covered by in-
surance, Jan Haas, interim vice pres-
ident of business and finance, said in
an email.
Because North Central chose to re-
place the HVAC system rather than
just decontaminating it, additional
expenses were involved. Haas be-
lieves the investment is important for
the health, wellbeing and peace of
mind for students.
The whole process is set to end this
upcoming spring or summer when
the additional solutions to prevent a
reoccurrence of mold issues will be
implemented in Phillipps Hall.

On November 7th 2017 Minneapolis held its Mayoral Election.

Frey new mayor of Minneapolis

Jacob Frey, a former city council member of ward
3, defeated former mayor Betsy Hodges in November
7, 2017 election. On Freys campaigning website, he
said, I want to be your mayor. Im a Minneapolis City
Council member, a civil rights attorney, an advocate
for social justice, and a proud resident of the greatest
city in America.
During the campaign, Frey was criticized by many
people as too young, too ambitious, and not from
around here the Star Tribune reported.
A total of $1.8 million was poured into the mayoral
race, with candidates using numerous resources for ad-
vertisement alone.
In Minneapolis the voting system is done by
a ranked-choice election. Voters rank up to three candi-
date choices on the ballot for each office. Frey won the
majority of first choice votes, securing 25%. Follow-
ing Frey was Tom Hoch with 19% and Betsy Hodges

with 18% of the votes. A total of 16 candidates were on
the ballot; the remaining 38% of votes was dispersed
among them.
Together, Minneapolis, weve made real
change, and lasting change in our city, and referred to
her time as mayor as the greatest honor of my life,
former mayor Hodges said in an interview with the
Star Tribune following the election.
In addition to the mayoral election the city
council seats were chosen as well. The election was
held for all thirteen seats within the council.

Opportunity to host events promoting
unity among students

The Dream Big Fund has been in
place for the last 8 to 10 years, but
is fairly unknown and rarely used.
The goal of this fund supply funding
for creative projects designed to de-
velop unity within the student body
at North Central. A total of $3,500 is
available for student grants for proj-
ects across campus.
Any student is able to apply for a
grant to fund ideas for bringing the
campus together. Grant applications
can be found in the student life tab on
Skyline or through campus resident
directors. After submitting an appli-
cation, students present a layout of
the idea or event, projected numbers,
event goals, and a requested number
of funds to the student government
executive board. The members of the
board will review the students ideas
with them, ask questions, and figure
out important details.
One upcoming project supported
by the Dream Big Fund is the Render
Christmish party scheduled for Dec.
8. The event organizers received a
$1,000 grant to create a free event for
students to come together to celebrate
the Christmas season.
Money for the fund is supplied
from an amount of money factored
into students tuition costs. A small
percentage goes into a fund for stu-
dent life activities which the Dream
Big Fund supports such as the Stu-
dent Activity Committee and Render.
The goal is to have students em-
powered to empower others, Hunt-
er Costello, student body president,
said.
New applications and petitions are
allowed every month. Throughout the
year there are numerous opportuni-
ties to apply for this grant money and
make something happen.

and the committee is always looking
for students [to apply].

iPhone X Review: The same, but different
Josiah Mayo
The iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X were
debuted by Apple at their newly
opened Apple Park in Cupertino,
California Sept. 12. In many ways
the new iPhone line-up is a leap for-
ward for Apple, but where the tech-
nology giant truly shines is with its
announcement of their completely
re-designed smartphone: iPhone X.
I have had the iPhone X in my
hands since launch day, giving me the
chance to test out the $1,000 smart-
phone and get to know its quirks
and delights. There are many things
to love about Apples flagship smart-
phone and theres few things which
may be drawbacks for some long-
time iPhone users.
Design
The design of the iPhone X imme-
diately stands out from the iPhone 8
and 8 Plus. The re-design is a breath
of fresh air compared to the out-dat-
ed, aluminum slab design that has
been touted by Apple since the iP-
hone 6.
The iPhone X features an all-glass
design with glass on the front and
back of the phone. The frame is made
of surgical-grade stainless steel. Steel
is a much-welcomed design change,
as it is much harder than aluminum
and gives a nice weight to the body of
the phone so its solid in your hands.
Apple claims that the glass used in
their new iPhone line-up is the hard-
est glass ever in a smartphone. This
statement likely refers to the durabil-
ity of the glass in drop incidents and
not its resistance to scratches. I would
still recommend using a screen pro-
tector to prevent scratches and break-
age. Apple has set a premium of $279
Why Super Mario Odyssey is the Game of the Year
How Nintendo leveled up their superstar mascot
Super Mario Odyssey takes the Super Mario formula and evolves it in virtually every way. Its available on the
Nintendo Switch home gaming console.

In the past three decades, Mario has
become a worldwide icon for video
gaming. With Super Mario Bros. on
the Nintendo Entertainment System
(NES), his franchise set a precedent
for how 2-dimensional platforming
should work. Later, with Super Ma-
rio 64, Nintendo established the stan-
dard for 3D platformers with smooth
physics and the constant incentive to
collect another Power Star to save
Princess Peach from the clutches of
Bowser. Now, not only has Nintendo
without AppleCare + to fix an iPhone
X screen, which is higher than the
$169 cost of fixing an iPhone 8, ac-
cording to the Verge.
Display
The iPhone X sports an almost
bezel-less screen on the front of the
device. This is the first time Apple
has made the transition to the OLED
screen technology that has been used
in many Samsung smartphones.
OLED screens are more energy effi-
cient by giving every pixel the ability
to turn on and off while the display
is on, which allows for brighter col-
ors and truer blacks to emanate from
the display. The iPhone Xs screen
goes edge-to-edge with the frame of
the phone, making images and video
enjoyable.
I cant talk about the display with-
out talking about the obtrusive notch
that protrudes at the top of the smart-
phone. At first glance, its hard not to
notice. After using the device I got so
accustomed to it that it didnt bother
me in day-to-day use. For those that
love watching video on their iPhones,
the notch can definitely be annoy-
ing. It cuts into the canvas and can
block your view of the content when
in landscape view. I definitely can tell
that the iPhone X was designed as a
phone to be primarily used in portrait
view.
Hardware
The iPhone line-up features one of
the fastest, if not the fastest smart-
phone processing units ever. The
new A11 Bionic processing chip was
made for the future. It has an all-new
neural engine that allows for facial
recognition technology. Apple con-
tinues to push the limits of current
expanded the boundaries and expec-
tations of Mario with Super Mario
Odyssey, theyve managed to raise
the bar for how all games should be
handled. Super Mario Odyssey is a
masterpiece of a game, fit for the title
of Game of the Year.
Super Mario Odyssey is a game
that builds upon its predecessors in
virtually every way. While Nintendo
marketed it as a continuation of the
gameplay styles found within Super
Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine,
there are callbacks and direct inspi-
computer chip technology.
Battery life is great. Coming from
the iPhone 7 Plus that has a long-last-
ing battery, I could comfortably get
through a whole day without search-
ing for a charger with the iPhone X.
Cameras
The iPhone Xs dual-camera set-
up on the rear is virtually unchanged
from last years iPhone 7 Plus. Each
camera has 12 megapixel sensors,
one with telephoto capabilities for
optical zoom up to 2x and digital
zoom up to 10x. The iPhone X has a
slight improvement over the iPhone 8
Plus with optical image stabilization
in both cameras, versus only one in
the iPhone 8 Plus. This is a big deal
for camera lovers and is excellent for
video. The cameras biggest upgrade
lies in the greatly improved image
processor. Ive found the iPhone X
can take very impressive low-light
photos for a smartphone camera.
The front-facing camera on the
iPhone X has a 7 megapixel sensor
that features the new Portrait Light-
ing mode for taking selfies with an
array of light effects to choose from,
including a stage light effect. Portrait
Mode was a new feature introduced
last year in the iPhone 7 Plus that
creates a depth effect around a person
or object. Right now, the front-facing
Portrait Mode doesnt work very well
and blurs out hair and the edges of
your face. This can be fixed in later
software updates. Virtual and aug-
mented reality are becoming more
popular in smartphones and the new
iPhone line-up sports new abilities to
make applications come to life.

fastest and most secure way to pro-

Apple has now developed their own
technology that uses an infrared dot
projector to scan and identify 30,000
points on your face.
Conclusion
Apple claims that Face ID is much
more secure than Touch ID. They
say theres a one in 50,000 chance
someone can unlock your iPhone
with their fingerprint on Touch ID.
With Face ID, Apple says theres a
one in 1,000,000 chance. Even with
per stylish. In Super Mario Odyssey,
Marios cap is lost and Cappy takes
its place.
Cappy is a ghost hat that has the
ability to transform into any possible
styled hat. More interestingly, and the
more appealing part in a gameplay
perspective, is Cappys ability to also
possess anything it lands upon. Mario
can throw Cappy onto hatless ene-
mies to possess and take their shape,
size and power. While that may sound
spooky, its actually a lot of fun.
Throughout the game you explore
various Kingdoms, and in one of the
very first Kingdoms you encounter a
group of frogs. If you throw Cappy
onto a frog, Mario is able to enter the
body of the frog and jump much high-
er. Not only does this open up new
areas to explore, but it allows you to
re-explore previous areas that you
couldnt reach normally. This pattern
of breaking the conventions of Mario
level design is echoed throughout

face, child and adult alike.
Super Mario Odyssey is not only
one of the best games of the year,
but itll go down as one of the great-
est games of all time. It is the perfect
culmination of immersive gameplay
controls, captivating music, stunning
visuals and an undefinable charm.

times be a struggle. We are expected
to pay bills and live on our own soon
after leaving home for school. There
are a million expectations, that not
everyone knows how to handle. For
the time being, there may be a few
answers to every college students
problems.
There are a few different life hacks
to saving money as you survive col-
lege. The first is for coffee, the Band-

New Social Work Professor Mallory Knipe comes back to her roots
School of Social and Behavioral Sciences welcomes a new face

Mallory Knipe is North Centrals
new social work program director.
She started on campus at the begin-
ning of the 2017 fall semester.
Knipe had been working in higher
education at Wisconsin state univer-
sities for a couple of years before
choosing to apply for a position at
North Central. While working at the
University of Wisconsin Eau Claire
last year, she was told about North
Central possibly having an open so-
cial work teaching position for 2017.
I had been interested in teaching
at North Central for a while. I real-
ly desired to teach in a setting where
I could incorporate faith with my
teaching and emphasize the Christian
faith within the institution, Knipe
said. Thats obviously something
that I didnt have in Eau Claire.
Knipe chose to pursue her higher
education at Trinity Bible College. I
played basketball here [North Cen-
tral] when I was at Trinity. I was on
the basketball team, so we came here
a lot. I was very familiar with the
fastest growing program on campus,
according to North Centrals admis-
sions department. We are a very new
major. We have only been accredited
for a couple years now, so we are still
kind of in that stage where we are
building the program, Knipe said.
What North Centrals PR team has
found when they go to youth conven-
tions and state fairs to promote the
school is that the two main programs
that students were considering that
we didnt have were nursing and so-

can be a clinical counselor in social
work, Knipe said. Students can go
on to get their masters degree in one
year after getting their BSW from
North Central. When one achieves
their MSW they can go on to work in
clinics as a therapist.
Next year the School of Social and
Behavioral Sciences is planning to
start a social work student associa-
tion. Psychology students currently
have Psi Chi, Knipe said. Psi Chi
is an honors society for psychology
students.
Social work students can be a
part of Psi Chi, Knipe said. But
now social work will have their own
program specifically for social work
students to be able to do special train-
ings, bring in guest speakers, have
conversations about difficult issues,
do fund raising for certain projects or
just get involved more in the commu-
nity.

Rave reviews come after latest theater performance

semester. This year they brought a
childhood favorite of many to life,
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Fac-
tory. North Central Theatre put on a
re-enactment of Roald Dahls Willy
Wonka. People got a musical twist of
a classic film.
Willy Wonka ran from Nov. 10
through Nov. 19. The performance
went on for two weekends with many
sold out shows. The cast was very di-
verse, with actors even in age.
There were many people involved
with the show who have never done
theatre before. But thats what makes

Down the street from North Cen-
tral, between Portland Ave. and 5th
Ave., FINNEGANS Microbrewery
and Kraus-Anderson Construction is
continuing work on what has been
nicknamed the brewtel.
The FINNEGANS House will
become the new headquarters for
FINNEGANS, a brewery company.
Along with the Finnegans headquar-
ters, the complex will have a 17-story
apartment building, a park, a sev-
en-story boutique hotel and the new
FINNEGANS microbrewery, accord-
ing to The Growler Magazine.
FINNEGANS was founded with
community in mind Jacquie [Ber-
glund, CEO and Co-Founder of FIN-
NEGANS] had a vision to create not
just a brewery, but an ecosystem of
businesses where the sum is greater
than its parts both in impact in our
community and in experience for
guests visiting, said Tricia Nelson,
head of sales development and com-
munity relations at FINNEGANS.
In their pursuit of building a com-
munity space for leaders, FINNEG-
ANS is including a co-working space,
dubbed the FINNovation Lab, in their
Impact Hub MSP, an international
network of community co-working
and social incubator spaces, to help
accomplish this dream. The Impact
Hub brings a global network, and is
an established community of entre-
preneurs, activists, creatives and pro-
fessionals to take collaborative action
and drive positive change in MSP and
beyond Nelson said.
As FINNEGANS grows they hope
to have a greater impact on the com-
munity they have been part of for
nearly 20 years.
Having said this, the project is
deeply rooted in Elliot Park and we
are most excited about working with
neighbors, neighborhood business-
es and organizations, Nelson said.
One piece of this, in partnership
with EPNI and Neighborhood Devel-
opment Center, our goal is to grow
and support new entrepreneurs within
Elliot Park.
The taproom is planned to open in
March 2018 with the Impact Hub and
FINNovation Lab opening the fol-
lowing month.

Rams look to fill Voigts shoes
New additions change mens basketball

The mens basketball team began
their season with the goal of winning
the conference championship, but are
looking to find a way to compensate
for the loss of last seasons leading
scorer Travis Voigt, who left North
Central after last season.
The Rams return three starters from
last year: senior Joel Cline, junior Jar-
ed High and senior C.J. Lewis. Aside
from those three players the rest of
the team will look very different.
New guys will be in the lineup
and have to step up, Cline said. We
have a good mix of freshman and
transfers and were all still learning
how to play together.
The team will need to find a way
to divide out Voigts responsibilities.

against St. Catherine University,
hosted by North Central to raise
funds for hurricane relief, sophomore
captain Annabel Morrisroe broke her
tibula, an injury which required sea-
son-ending surgery.
Losing Annabel was a huge blow
for us, head coach Paul Brunner said
in an email. But I have loved my
teams response. I believe Annabel
is the best post player in our confer-
ence.
Morrisroe averaged 15.5 points per
game and 10.8 rebounds per game
in her freshman season. She led the
UMAC in rebounding, with the play-
er following her lead averaging 9.9
rebounds per game.
Following Morrisroes injury, se-
nior captain Lizzy Swanson injured
to her hamstring. Though her recov-
ery time is a few weeks, the Rams
will miss the 2016-17 UMAC scor-
ing leader. Swanson averaged 19.6
points per game.

selflessness and understanding that
no player is bigger than the team.
Every player has stood out to me
in one way or another, Brunner said.
Each player will play an important
role for us this season and having
players embrace these roles will play
a big factor in how well we play.
Just over 75 percent of the womens
basketball team is new to North Cen-
tral and the atmosphere of Division
III basketball. They have jumped into
the #AllIn mentality that Brunner has
made as the teams motto.
Brunner has established four pillars
for the team: faith, family, future and
basketball. He wants the players to be
all-in with their actions and words
as they apply the pillars in their lives.
Swanson, Morrisroe and senior Haley
Modahl are the only three returners
on the team. They are modeling the
pillars to the rest of the team.
Being great teammates, friends

Tuff has never coached at the col-
lege level, but she has five years of
