HowhaveIdevelopedthiscompetencyduringthiscourseorprofessionalseminar/fieldexperience?

Throughout my first field experience, I have developed a better understanding of concepts and methods

used
in the classroom to facilitate in-depth learning by the students. I have observed many teachers with

many different learning strategies and watched how their methods affected the students and how they
responded

to these strategies. I have not had enough experience within my field of study, but I have


witnessed enough from other classes to know how to go about teaching class material that pertains to
subject matter and how to get the most out of the lesson. One teacher in particular made connections
the
with
the current culture of society to make the subject more relatable and therefore more understandable
his students, which is something I have kept in mind and plan to incorporate into my future teaching
for
practices.
His methods were very effective and were successful in helping the students understand the
class
material with a different view point pertaining to their culture. The teacher I followed that taught the

subject in my field used a lot of metaphors and also provided explanations that all students could

understand (eg: making music is like building blocks, when one block is out of place the whole tower falls

apart). This helped me understand that I have potential to help my future students understand in ways
that are different than simply teaching the class material by the book as well as create meaningful links

that are memorable and relatable.

I believe that my current level of mastery for this competency is thorough.

Since I have only been observing and not actually participating in teaching any classes, I have only

partially
mastered this competency. I have spoken to the teacher before and after the class in a

professional manner and asked questions pertaining to the teaching experience. There were a few
students

in several classes that I have had the opportunity to speak to and help with their schoolwork,

I spoke to them in a professional manner as well. They responded appropriately by referring to me
and
"Miss", indicating that there was a strictly professional relationship between me and the students. The

that I have taken while observing the classes were written clearly and concisely, without making
any
biases or expressing emotions in my work, and I referred to certain individuals as "a student" or "the

teacher",
making sure not to make any direct references to said individuals.

During my first field experience I feel that I have not had very many opportunities to develop this

competency.
There was a professional development day that I had attended in which I helped the

teacher I was following with his regular duties, such as preparing pamphlets for a school music concert,

which is personal involvement in a school project. Although it was very minimal, I was still somewhat


involved in a school event. I have not had any opportunities to interact with parents of the students. There

was
another school event that occurred in my second day of the field experience, where the students
were
to run a short marathon to raise awareness for a cause. During this event I helped supervise the
students
by standing outside with them while they ran alongside the other teachers. I attempted to help

hand
out snacks to the students afterwards but it wasn't needed and everything was already planned out.
There
was another event at the school - a group of students put together some self-made movies in a

drama class and welcomed the school community to watch them at the auditorium, in which I participated

in with my colleagues, the students, and the staff.
I would say that my current level of mastery for this competency is partial.

I have developed this competency during my first field experience by taking the necessary notes of my

observations
and using them as a resource to help develop my teaching methods. I have also spoken to

numerous teachers about their teaching experience and I asked for suggestions and advice that could

later help me in my career. The teachers were very informative and provided a lot of information and

feedback, in which I have taken note of to refer to them at a later time. They helped me understand what I

was
getting myself into, how to manage the classroom, and how to be prepared for teaching a lesson,
which
helped me identify what my strengths and weaknesses are and which characteristics I should work
on
to help me in the future. I feel that after this field experience I am more prepared to become an
educator
and I now know what it takes to be a successful teacher. I have observed the teachers that
didn't
do so well in managing their class and teaching the class material, in which I have also taken note

of and I now know what to avoid doing in the class room. I have also taken the time to discuss my

experiences with my colleagues and their different experiences have been very informative, full of useful

information that I may have missed or not had the chance to experience yet.

The level of mastery I have accomplished for this competency is thorough.

HowhaveIdevelopedthiscompetencyduringthiscourseorprofessionalseminar/fieldexperience?

I have only slightly had the chance to develop this competency, for I have not yet had the opportunity to
teach
any classes. I have observed numerous teachers and the methods they use to manage the

classroom, in which I will model after their techniques later in my teaching career. I have had the

opportunity
to be somewhat involved in certain classes, such as the art classes that I have visited - I
walked
around the classroom, interacted with a few students and spoke to them about their artwork.

Being
somewhat of an artist myself, I gave some advice to some of the students and they took my advice
with the teacher's approval. While going around to talk to the students about their work I made sure to

include everyone and not show any preferences towards certain students. I spoke professionally and
explained to the students how my art suggestions would help them using well-founded reasons.
The level of mastery for this competency is acceptable.
