By placing a high-
resolution color
video camera
above the blister
filling line the
VisioChrom
system can very
quickly determine
whether the
blisters are filled
correctly or not.
The picture from the camera is digitised in the system. Camera types vary from standard color cameras
up to very high-resolution color cameras. All cameras used are of CCD-camera type.
Within this picture the user can define up to 8 blisters, and the blisters can in total contain up to 1000
products. The VisioChrom Micro will then inspect the products within each blister and will produce for
every stroke an accepted/rejected output for each blister.
Ease of use
The user interface is designed to make it easy to make the VisioChrom Micro able to check a large
number of different types of products packed in blisters. By that it is possible for the user to "program" or
"learn" the vision system to inspect a specific product in the optimal manner.
This "programming" or "learning" is performed through an easy to use set of menus shown on the touch
screen color monitor.
Measure features
The fill control is performed by using a number of methods and functions which enables the system to
detect correct filled blisters, not filled blisters, nearly filled blisters, blisters with broken products etc.
Individual products will be measured and evaluated on the basis of a set of parameters like color, size,
shape, position etc.
Security features.
The VisioChrom Micro is from its basics designed with build-in security features. These include:
The system has built-in user groups with different access levels.
For a test set-up of the system the camera should be mounted above the foil, 'looking' down on the
products in blister. The forming film with products to be inspected is then placed under the camera.
Color
CCD camera
Light unit
Touch screen
(optional)
Blisters
The camera is connected to the VisioChrom Micro unit with a combined set of power- and video-cables.
The power to the camera comes from the VisioChrom Micro system.
When all parts are connected please connect it all to the mains. Note that no part should be connected
or disconnected when power is supplied to any part of the system.
After power-on the system performs an internal test and then starts up with the VisioChrom Micro screen
picture.
System contains all basic set up parameters like language, user management, camera-
settings etc.
Login / Logout are used for users to login and out of the system.
Formats handles loading, saving and defining formats.
Statistics is used for viewing statistics and production data.
Test Grab is a feature for emulating picture acquiring.
The format-designer defines the layout of formats by use of the menu system with color- graphics
overlay on the video picture from the camera. When the format of a single blister is defined, it can
easily be copied and placed on all the other blisters. This makes it very easy to define new layouts and
formats.
The practical way of doing it is described in the description of formats defining/editing menu at page
83.
Format storage
The VisioChrom Micro system has the capability of saving and loading a large number of formats. The
format settings consist of original picture, blister sizes and positions, color definitions, inspection
tolerances etc.
The format storage is handled from the VisioChrom Micro system through ease of use menu. This
gives the feature of very quick and safe re-loading of the formats during a batch or product change.
The practical way of doing it is described in the description of the Formats menu at page 83.
Select language
The VisioChrom Micro system can be installed with virtually any language. All menu texts and
information texts can be translated through a simple text file.
Different
languages
Use the / buttons to select another language. Press the OK button when selected.
User management
In order to get full advantage of the security features of the VisioChrom Micro system it is necessary to
define users and assign these appropriate access rights.
Administrator
Designer
Supervisor
Operator
In the System Access Control User Management menu it is possible to define a number of
users and assign group belonging(s) to these.
Note. The first user must be an Administrator. The VisioChrom Micro requires at least
one user as Administrator.
A user can be assigned to more groups if necessary. The user will thereby be a kind of overall user;
this can be very useful in the installation phase.
Select camera
type
Camera settings
When the correct camera/mode is selected it is necessary to perform a size calibration of the field of
view for the camera. This will make it possible to enter blister sizes and positions direct in mm
(millimetres).
In order to operate with accurate colors it is also necessary to assure that the WHITE-point adjustment
is correct, see page 74
Size calibration
Place a ruler (or two rulers) under the camera. Place the ruler at the same height as the top of the
blisters. Take a New Picture of the ruler and adjust the yellow rectangle to be positioned appropriate
over the ruler (use a large yellow rectangle for better precision).
Make a manual reading of the real-world size of the yellow ruler in mm. Enter these in the 2 fields in the
menu. The X-distance is the horizontal distance and Y-distance is the vertical distance.
The VisioChrom Micro system has now the basis for calculating real world measures (blister sizes and
positions) into the coordinate system of the camera.
After power-on and start of the VisioChrom Micro the system will perform the internal initialisation and
check routines, which also check the contents of the current set-up.
If the contents are OK the VisioChrom Micro will be ready for inspecting blisters and products in a layout
identical to latest in use.
Before any blister layouts can be made (or changed) is it necessary to Login with format editing rights
(Designer).
When logged in with format editing rights it is possible to make New layouts and to Edit existing layouts
in the Formats editor.
Define layout
When a user with format editing rights has logged in it is possible to define a new layout containing one
or more blisters.
In the Formats menu it is possible to enter the format editor by defining a New layout or by editing an
existing.
By going through the following pages step by step it will be possible to define a new layout and teach
the system to inspect the product in this.
The products should be of normal production quality and should be as representative for the whole
production as possible.
When the new format name has been entered the format editor will be opened. If the name already
exists the format editor opens this existing format in normal edit mode.
When the format editor is opened with a new format name the individual menu items will only be
available in a sequential order. It is necessary to open each menu item in sequence to walk through all
necessary menus.
Before it is possible to make the blister layout and define products the system need a picture with
products.
Make sure to have filled a complete format index with good products.
If the complete blister index is positioned exactly under the camera it is possible to get the picture using
the Single Acquire button.
If the blister machine is of a continuous running type (not indexed) then fill at least one complete format
index and then run one index with the blister machine. The VisioChrom Micro will digitise the picture
during the movement.
The VisioChrom Micro has now digitised one picture into the memory.
The Live button makes it possible to see and get a picture without having to start the blister machine.
When a picture with good products is digitised then Close the menu.
The next step is to define the actual blisters in the Define Blisters menu.
In the Define Blisters menu is the actual layout of the blisters defined (in this case 3 blisters).
Define position
and size of blisters
Define blister
number 1
Set position and set the size of this blister by use of the arrow buttons.
The button in the middle will change the operation mode of the arrow buttons from movement to re-
sizing.
It is also possible to directly specify the size (and position) of the blister by typing these values direct into
the numeric fields.
Dependent upon placement and orientation of the camera should the first blister either be placed in the
top left corner or in the top right corner of the format range. See page 88 for more details.
In most installations blister number 1 should be placed in the top left corner (as shown).
When blister number 1 is placed correct and has the correct size, the pockets need to be defined. This is
done in the Pockets menu.
In the Pockets menu all pockets will be defined. The position and size of the pockets defines where the
products are placed. They should at least be as large as the actual pockets in the blisters.
Define pockets
The VisioChrom Micro system can define pockets of the following shapes:
Round
Oval (elliptic)
Capsule
Rectangular
Select the shape for this pocket by use of the shape selection button Round.
Setting position and size is done as with blisters. The middle button can however change between
Mode: Move, Mode: Resize and Mode: Rotate.
The position of the first pocket should be around the top-left most product.
When the first pocket is positioned correct with the right size and shape, then press the New button to
get an exact copy of the first pocket.
Note. All pockets with the same shape and size are by default treated as pocket with
identical products. If e.g. 2 different products are present in the same blister it
might be an idea to define the pockets a little different (size difference of 0.1mm)
then will the system by default determine that there are 2 different products
present.
Place the second pocket at its position and press New again and continue until all pockets have been
defined.
Place more
pockets
When all pockets are placed correct, press OK to close the menu and place the rest of the blisters.
Place more
blisters
To place the next blister select New. This new blister has the same number and type of pockets as the
first blister.
Use the arrow buttons to move the blister or type in the position direct.
Now when all blisters are placed correctly, the products inside the blister pockets need to be defined.
This is done in the Define Products menu.
In the Define Products menu the color of the products in the blisters will be defined. (In this case all
products are of the same color).
Define products in
pockets
The AutoColor function can automatically detect the color of the products.
When each of the products are of a simple single colored type (there can be more different single
colored) and their pockets are defined it is possible to use the AutoColor function.
It is also possible to manually adjust the color definition. This can be done in the Color menu (under the
sample of the color).
To manually define colors of a product press the Color button (under the sample). The color is defined
by picking samples from the picture.
Manually define
colors
On the monitor there is shown representation of the defined color. This is shown with a GREEN marking.
To define a new color, just move the yellow rectangle onto the product and press the Add/Expand
button. From within this yellow rectangle will the system pick all color variations and use these to define
the color.
Please click the OK, when the marked color definition (with green) on the screen fits the products
The color is defined in a color space called HSI (Hue, Saturation and Intensity). It is of cause also
possible to enter the color definition directly in HSI values. To do this, click the Values field in the menu.
This possibility is discussed later at page 93.
Now all blisters, pockets and product-colors are defined. Close the format editor by pressing the OK
button.
This new format is now ready to get the final learning. During this final learning the system will get
information about different variations in color, size and positioning. The system will also need to learn
information for empty pockets to be able to reliably distinguish between empty pockets and pockets with
unknown products.
Learn phase
The system is now ready to inspect products in the blisters, although it has not yet learned any
tolerances from the real production. This is accomplished during the first number of index (20).
Learning good
products
and empty
pockets
During the learn-process the system will reliably detect missing products, half products and other
defects.
At a high access level it is possible to make a test run by pressing the Test Grab button. By doing that
the system takes a new picture and makes an analysis as if it was running production.
When the good products have been learned the Teach menu closes automatically.
All products OK
Broken product in
blister 2
Format storage
When a layout has been defined in the format editor then it is saved it in the internal format storage
under its name. This storage can hold a number of formats, which can be called forward at a later time
when the same product or format is in use again.
The format layouts in the format storage are at all times intact. Only when a Formats Edit Save is
performed will be any updates in relation to the format storage.
Load Edit
Save (As)
All format layouts are saved in the format storage from the format editor.
Measuring Method
There are no specific requirements to the type of products the VisioChrom Micro system can check in
the picture. However, to obtain a good, precise and repeatable inspection the products should be
outlined with a clear and steady contrast.
All products in the field of view and inside a blister are measured individually at full resolution. This
makes the system very tolerant in relation to optical distortion, placement of the camera etc.
For each automatically scanned product the system measures a set of geometrical parameters. These
parameters are then monitored against a set of learned parameters and tolerances.
The VisioChrom Micro can inspect the following properties of each product:
Area.
Position, absolute or relative to references.
Dimensions (length, width).
Color verification.
and more
Adjusting of the learned set and tolerances are done automatically within given limits.
This walk-through is not intended to be the way to set-up the system for a particular job mere as a
reference guide to look up a particular menu or parameter.

Parameter Description
Min. analysis time (ms) The minimum analyse time is the time the result-signals and
DataValid signals should be at low level (0 volt). When the
VisioChrom Micro is operated with a slower PLC with a large
scan-cycle time, then should the minimum-analyse-time be set
at app. 1,5 times the largest scan-cycle time.
Data valid delay (ms) The result-signals and DataValid signal are normally set at the
same time. Due to different delays in opto-couplers in the
signal path from the VisioChrom Micro to the PLC of the blister
machine it can be necessary to delay the DataValid signal a
few milliseconds to assure that the result signals are stable
when the DataValid signal is detected.
Max. output time (ms) The maximum output time is a time limit for setting a GOOD
result. If the output is not ready at this time it will not be set
and the DataValid will not be set either.
Stand still detection time (s) The system is supervising the time between triggers and if
there has been no trigger for a specific number of seconds,
the system determines that the surrounding machine is at
stop.

Set shutter-time.
White point region This is the test area for verifying the white-point. See page 74.
If parts are moving during this shutter time e.g. a carton is passing by then this part will look un-sharp
in the picture (motion-blur). The faster a part is moving, the shorter time the camera CDD should be
open.
Shutter time (ms.) The shutter time can also be shown/entered in milliseconds,
this will then be converted to nearest number of H-sync pulses
and recalculated back into milliseconds.
WHITE-point adjusting
Light used for illuminating the products for inspection is a type of white light. True white light is however
practically impossible to obtain and due to the different variations of white colors it is necessary to define
what the system should interpret as white.
The WHITE-point adjustment is done to assure that the camera can produce accurate colors. The
camera has a CCD sensor system that produces the colors red, green and blue. When the outputs from
all 3 sensors are identical, then the result is white (or grey).
To make sure that the camera produces a white picture when it is actually looking at a white sheet of
paper it is necessary to adjust the output from the red, green and/or the blue channel.
1) Place a white sheet of paper under the camera. This paper will be used as the white
reference.
2) Position the yellow rectangle to only enclosure the white paper (not any black or colored lines
or text).
3) The system measures the value of red, green and blue inside the rectangle. The relative ration
of the 3 colors is shown in percent.
4) Adjust the 2 menu items R and B until the measured values inside the yellow rectangle all are
app. 33.3%
The normal values for Red gain and Blue gain are dependent upon the type and color-temperature
of light used (fluorescent tubes or LED).
Size calibration
When the correct camera /mode is selected it is necessary to perform a size calibration of the camera
field of view. This will make it possible to enter blister sizes and positions direct in mm (millimetres).
Place a ruler (or two rulers) under the camera. Place the ruler at the same height as the top of the
blisters. Take a New Picture of the ruler and adjust the yellow rectangle to be positioned appropriate
over the ruler (use a large yellow rectangle for better precision).
Make a manual reading of the real-world size (in mm) of the yellow rectangle by looking at the ruler in the
picture. Enter these in the 2 fields in the menu. The X-distance is the horizontal distance and Y-distance
is the vertical distance.
The VisioChrom Micro system has now the basis for calculating real world measures (blister sizes /
positions) into the coordinate system of the camera.

To make a blister layout and define products the system need a picture with products.
Make sure to have filled a complete format index with good products.
If the complete blister index is positioned exactly under the camera it is possible to get the picture using
the Single Acquire button.
If the blister machine is of a continuous running machine (not intermittent) then fill at least one complete
format index and then run one index with the blister machine. The VisioChrom Micro will digitise the
picture during the movement.
The VisioChrom Micro has now digitised one (or more) picture(s) into the memory.
The Live button makes it possible to see and get a picture without having to start the blister machine.
If the format has defined multiple triggers, the VisioChrom Micro system will acquire the number of
pictures specified.
Define Blisters
Menu path: Formats Edit Define Blisters.
The actual layout of the blisters and pockets is made here.
Place a blister
Set position and set the size of this blister by use of the arrow buttons. The button in the middle will
change the operation mode of the arrow buttons from movement to re-sizing.
It is also possible to directly specify the size (and position) of the blister by typing these values direct into
the numeric fields.
Dependent upon placement and orientation of the camera the first blister should be placed either in the
top left corner or in the top right corner of the format range. See page 88 for more details.
In most installations blister number 1 should be placed in the top left corner (as shown).
When blister number 1 is placed correct and has the correct size, it is a good practise to define the
pockets. This is done in the Pockets menu.
On most blister machines is blister number 1 placed on the opposite side of the operator.
Pockets
Menu path: Formats Edit Define Blisters Pockets.
The VisioChrom Micro system can define pockets of the following shapes:
Round
Oval (elliptic)
Capsule
Rectangular
Select New to get the first pocket. The position and size of the pockets defines where the products are
placed. They should at least be as large as the actual pockets in the blisters.
Select the shape for this pocket by use of the shape selection button. Setting position and size is done
as with blisters. The middle button can however change between Mode: Move, Mode: Resize and
Mode: Rotate.
Position the first pocket around the top-left most product. When the first is positioned correct with the
right size and shape, then press the New button to get an exact copy of the first pocket.
Note. This note applies only when the editor is opened with a new format (not in edit)
All pockets with the same shape and size are by default treated as pocket with
identical products. If e.g. 2 different products are present in the same blister it
might be an idea to define the pockets a little different (size difference of 0.1mm)
then the system will by default determine that there are 2 different products
present.

There are no restrictions in the size and/or shape of the pockets. Pockets must however be inside the
frame of the blister definitions.
Define products
Menu path: Formats Edit Define Products.
In the Define Products menu the different types of products are defined. The VisioChrom Micro
system does by default define the following types of products:
Tablet / Oblong
Capsules single-color
Capsules dual-color
Each of the pre-defined product types has separate measure methods and parameters. The system is
thereby optimised to handle the different characteristics in an optimal way.
The AutoColor function takes samples from the middle of the pocket to define the color of the
product.
Take samples
from the image to
define the color.
It is possible to define the product colors manually by taking samples from the picture. The small
window can be moved around on the screen. When the product is fully inside the window press the
Add/Expand button.
The 'green' part on the monitor is what the computer accepts as the defined color.
In many cases it will be necessary to take more that one color sample from the picture to define the
color. When more samples are taken, these will be added to the color definition.
If the color gets too big and includes too much of foil or background, then just click the Undo or the
Reset to start all over again.
The defined color can be edited manually in the Values menu. Here it is possible to adjust the color
settings by adjusting the limits in the for the HSI values.
Manually define
the color by values
The video signal from the camera is of RGB (Red, Green and Blue) type. This type of video signal is very
convenient for camera producers but not very convenient for color understanding. The VisioChrom Micro
operates with HSI (Hue, Saturation and Intensity); this is much easier for a human to understand and to
define.
The 'green' part on the monitor is what the computer accepts as the defined color during an inspection.
Here it is also possible to adjust the color settings by adjusting the limits in the HSI color space.
In the VisioChrom Micro system is the Hue represented with values from 0 to 1023, these values
represent the complete color spectrum in a circular manner. The red values are around 0.
The Saturation is also represented with values from 0 to 1023. No saturation (grey) is 0. Full saturation
is 1023.
Intensity is represented with values from 0 to 765 where 0 is black and 765 is bright white.
Different products
in the same blister.
In blisters with different types of products it is very easy to define more different product types in the
VisioChrom Micro.
The product types are labelled by the VisioChrom Micro system. The names are:
1 <type> P1
2 <type> P2
The operator can edit the P1 and P2 to whatever names that are preferred. Use the / buttons
to select one of the product types (the selected is shown in yellow).
If there is only defined a single size of the pocket it is also easy to create new product types and
assign pockets to these. With the New button a new product type will be defined.
When the new product type is just defined there will be no pockets assigned to this type (no pockets
are marked in yellow).
To assign one or more pockets to a specific product type (the new) simply select the product type by
use of the / buttons and then point at the pocket on the screen. The pocket will now be of the
(new) selected type.
The product type Tablet / Oblong is the common type for standard tablets or oblongs.
Geometric- and
color-parameters
for tablets and
oblongs
The VisioChrom Micro system can measure a number of parameters for each product in the blister. In
this menu it is possible to select which parameters to check and set the tolerances.
Length / Width length of the product in the major axis and width across.
Each of the above parameters can be individually enabled or not. In the tool configuration menu, the
parameters can generally be enabled or disabled. For a more detailed description of the parameters
please see page 43.
Example with
capsule shaped
pockets
Capsule products
The product type Capsule Single Color is mainly used for capsules by which both halves have the
same color. The capsules can have text or no text; the product type handles this.
If there are more different capsule types in the blister the VisioChrom Micro can handles this by use of
more product types.
For the product type Capsule Single Color the VisioChrom Micro system can verify a number of
parameters. The size of the product can be verified.
Capsule length % is the tolerance of the length of the capsule product in the pocket,
measured in percentage.
Capsule length Min is a manually defined minimum value for the length of the product.
Capsule length Max is a manually defined maximum value for the length of the product.
Capsule end wo. print size of end-part of the capsule, which has no text-print.
Size % is the tolerance of the size of the product in the pocket, measured in percentage.
Size Min is a manually defined minimum value for the size of the product.
Size Max is a manually defined maximum value for the size for the product.
A detailed description of the measured features and their tolerances can be found at page 45.
Capsules, dual-colored
Example with
capsule shaped
pockets
2-colored capsule
products
The product type Capsule Dual Color is mainly used for capsules by which the two halves of the
capsule have different colors. The capsules can have text or no text; the product type handles this.
If there are more different capsule types in the blister the VisioChrom Micro can handles this by use of
more product types in the same way as with the Tablet / Oblong type.
For the product type Capsule Dual Color the VisioChrom Micro system can verify a number of
The size tolerances for a Capsule Dual Color type consist of 2 sets of parameters, one for each of
the 2 colors. In most cases the 2 set will be identical, but in special cases the one of the 2 colors
perhaps will have a narrower set of tolerances than the other color.
A detailed description of the measured features and their tolerances can be found at page 46.

Data on the output can only be expected if the Data valid signal is set to high by the system.
After all triggers this signal will go low and the result can be read after the signal is set high again.
Blister 1X result
These outputs are only valid when data valid is high, and they are updated as soon as the measuring is
finished.
The output of a blister is high if a measurement results in acceptance and will be high until beginning of
next measurement.
The output of a blister is low if a measurement does not result in acceptance and will stay low until the
end of the next measurement.

VisioChrom Micro Technical Manual Fault finding
In order to save changes made to drive C: a small command file need to be run. This file is
C:\Windows\SaveSettingsAndReboot.cmd, when this file is run will all changes made since power on
be saved and the computer will reboot. After reboot the drive C: is write-protected again.
In order to keep the amount of changes at a minimum it is good practice to reboot the system before any
changes are made and then run the command-file just after all changes are done. If the installation of a
program requires a reboot to be fully installed, then dont let this install-program perform the reboot, you
will need to do it manually with the command-file, and you might need to do it again to update the
changed the installation program might have done during the re-boot.
