Makibaka, Wag Matakot

Specific Speech Purpose: At the end of my speech, the audience will be able to understand

different views about protesting and demonstrations through rallying done by militant groups and

activists, its pros and cons together with the results of some successful protests.

Central Idea: Protests or assemblies of activists is a viable method of reaching the view of the

masses to the government or is it an obsolete technique and should evolve or be replaced.

Introduction

Attention Step: Makibaka, Wag Matakot! Makibaka Wag Matakot! This phrase is often

associated with activists. UP has the reputation of being one university not only producing

honorable and excellent students, but also activists that are well-aware of the issues of the

country and be the pioneers that the country needs.

Clarification Step: The phrase came from the shouts of our fellow countrymen who struggled

against martial law in the time of the late president Marcos. But until today, the phrase is still

relevant. Even after three decades, there can be perceived that change is still needed and the

Filipino people continues to hunger for it.

D. Protests often do not bring about immediate change.

III. Protesting through rallying does not change anything perhaps it only produces chaos,

divergence, and pain to different people, sides, and parties.

A. Conflicts arises between the police and the protesters during rallies and ultimately

result to chaos with the activists throwing molotovs and rocks and the police throwing water

bombs and tear gas grenades.

B. The local police used a sonic weapon to disperse protesters during the rallies

coinciding with the ASEAN summit happened last week.

C. Motorists often associate rallies and demonstrations with heavy traffic in the area

hence are annoyed when this happens.

D. The privileged people often discredits the power of protests and rallies as they only

waste time.

Conclusion

Summary Step: Protests, demonstrations, or rallies create different effects in different

situations. They are effective at times, and not at some. As a free nation, the Philippines and its

people exhibits their freedom to voice out concerns and stand for their views. These protests are
inevitable as they are viewed to be a good outlet to do these. The power of these mass protests

and rallies comes from the unity of the people, their faith for change and their hunger for it.

Instead, these rallies become warzones where the two sides practice their fighting capabilities,

creating a huge distraction to motorists and other people, and an activity that furthers create the

rift between the government and the people. There are current alternatives that can replace

demonstrations and rallies but are those as effective and as impactful as us, people, voicing our

concerns to our government who promised to do their best for our welfare and well-being.
