2:07 Introduction:
Have students clear off their tables. Grade threes we will
not need anything on their tables. At the end of class we
will need a pencil and papers but I will give you time then to
get those materials.
Review of key concepts from last lesson
Last LA class we talked about poetry with Mr.
Martens Monday morning. We talked about different
types of poetry.
On the board lets go over the different types of
poetry. By raising your hand, tell me some of the
8 mins types of poetry we talked about and read. There
was 5 different types.
Acrostic
Haiku
Limerick
Sonnet
Five Line Poems
Agenda for todays learning
Today our goal is to review these 5 types of poems
and the elements that make them different from one
another.
First we will talk about the 5 types above and their
elements
Second look at poems as a class and decide what
type of poem they are.
Third look at poems with a small group and discuss
what type of poem we are viewing.
Fourth look at poems and answer individually to
2:15 show me what you know.
Final Exit Slip
2:15 Body:
First off it is very important to remember the elements of
each type of poetry. Lets quickly go through the 5 types of
poetry that we discussed and the things to remember. By
raising your hands, what are the elements of Acrostic
Poems? *Hint we created them in class with our names. *
Acrostic
Letters of the word go down the page
vertical. At each letter you can write a word
or sentence about the word.
Haiku
Have 3 lines.
The first line and last line have 5 syllables.
The second line has 7 syllables.
12 mins Limerick
Have 5 lines.
Are funny and nonsensical
The 1st, 2nd and fifth lines rhyme each
other. The 3rd and 4th rhyme each other
also.
Sonnet
(All the rhymes do not need to rhyme
throughout the poem). The lines that rhyme
alternate. The last two lines should rhyme
each other.
Five Line
Each stanza should have 5 lines.
Does not have to rhyme.

- I will have students go through these poetry types and

recall the elements to these 5 different poems. Students
may need prompts even though they have be introduced to
these elements before

- I will have these items already typed out on a Word

2:27 Document show on the smartboard so that I do not lose the
interest of the students. After the class discusses each type
of poetry and the elements I will show the elements on the
smartboard for all to see and quickly read them before
moving on. This will help the students that didnt make the
connection during the discussion a chance now.

2:17 Transition: We will shift from listing elements of the different

 poetry to viewing poetry and deciding as a group what type of
poetry it is and why.

Transition: Students will need to have a body break. A stretching

 activity will be beneficial to get students out of their seats.
Okay students we need a body break because we have
been sitting for awhile now. If you would prefer to watch
you can since its a brain break, but you must remain
quiet and respectful.
2:27 Everyone that wants to participate stand up we are
going to do some stretches. You will all need to stay
close to your tables.
Touch your toes and count to 15, try to keep
your legs straight and stretch your legs.
Stand on your tippy toes and stretch your
hands and arms to the sky, try to hold this
for 10 seconds.
Now stand on your feet flat footed and arms
10 mins still in the air stretched out. Now move your
arms to the left and hips to the right to make
your body the shape of the letter C and a
backwards C.
Ask for two suggestions of stretches or
poses students want to do.
The final one is the most tricky. Stand tall
with one of your feet on your leg somewhere
between your ankle and your knee. Then to
make it more difficult raise your arms above
your head with the palms of your hands
pressed together. If you need to put your
other leg down to regain your balance again,
go ahead. Try to see if you can hold this
pose for 5 seconds.

Transition: Okay students please return back to your seats. We

are now going to be looking at poems. To switch it up you will be
working with your groups at your tables. We will need to be in four
groups. I am going to move a few people around, but not
everyone. Listen for your name to be call and move quietly so that
others will hear their name being called so they can move.

This will take a few minutes. If your name is not
called your job is to wait at your seat for the next
5 mins instructions.
To show me your are ready after I call out the
 names and where they should go I want everyone
to sit in their chairs and pose like a snowman.

I need Liam to go to the Yellow table, Bradyn to the blue

table, Deon to go to the gear table, Nora to the blue table
and Georgia to the blue table or green depending on
attendance.
That is everyone that is moving. In 5 seconds
everyone should be at their desks showing me their
are ready by posing like a snowman.

Group Learning Activity.

During this activity everyone in the group will need to talk to
each other and come up with one answer. After everyone
2:47 in the groups have quietly talked about what type of poem
they think I showed them then they will all raise their hands
showing me their groups has the answer.
It is very important they everyone has their hand up
and that no one shouts out the answer or their
group will not be picked. If students need to be
reminded to raise their hands and not shouting out I
will enforce this.

Transition: Thank students for working well in groups. If any

group expectations need to be addressed to reinforced what is
expected this is a good time. Okay students we need to do three
2:55 things. I am going to tell you the three things then ask you to do it.
Remain in your seats till I ask you to do the three things.
1. We need to all have a writing tool and pencil crayons.
2. We need a blank piece of paper with your name on it.
3. We need to return to our regular seats.
4. Return to your desk and look like a snowman.

-Have the students repeat the steps before asking them to do

them.

Individual Learning Activity.

Make sure the names of the poems are the on the
8 mins board so students can see all 5 types and how they
are spelt to relieve any stress about this activity.
Present all 5 types of poems on the smartboard.
One at a time. Have students write on their sheet 1
with a circle for the first one, 2 with a circle for the
second one and so on to the fifth question.
Give students a sonnet and color the rhyming pairs.
Unaware
Rhyming pairs should be colored the same

Remind students to have their name on it.

Transition: Clean up:

3:13 Have students bring on their right bring their papers
to the yellow table and on the left bring their papers
to the blue table.
After you have taken our paper to hand it in please
return to your proper seats. I will come around and
give you a sticky note. Do not write on your sticky
note till you know what I expect.

3:18 Conclusion:
Today we reviewed 5 different types of poetry and look at
what makes them different. We had lots of practise doing
this as a whole classroom, as small groups and
6 mins individually.
Next class we will look at how to present poems.
When I say go I want to hear from all of you about why type
of poetry you personally like the best. You all will do this by
 writing on your sticky note The five types are on the board
so please write one of the types and a short sentence on
why you like it. Once you are done writing on your sticky
note please stick them to the front whiteboard.

3:24 Stack and Pack:

Once you are done stick your sticky note on the
side white board and start cleaning. 1 minute to
clean up.
Assign two students to pass out agenda.
Agendas in backpacks and back in the class unless
the bell goes.
