Overview of heating and curing system errors

What triggers these system error codes
There are two ammeters in the Heaters Control PCA that perform a single check for all errors with the power in
the Drying and Curing modules.

According to Ohms law, I = V / R, current equals voltage divided by resistance. This means that because of
ohms law and because each ammeter is dedicated to a specific module (Drying or Curing), there are only a
few errors possible:

1. The current is too high: either V is too high or R is very low.

2. The current is too low: either V is too low or R is too high.

3. No current is detected: V = 0 or open circuit (R = infinity).

These three errors can occur in either the drying or curing module, and it is these errors that are covered by the
14.xx system errors. The troubleshooting procedures described in this newsletter are for the following specific
system errors:

14.05:00 AC Voltage too low on the Dryer Assembly. This error is related to when error 2 (above)
occurs.

14.17:00 AC Voltage too low on the Curing Module. This error is related to when error 2 (above)
occurs.

14.10:00 Open circuit in the Drying Module. This error is related to when error 3 (above) occurs.

14.11:00 Open circuit in the Curing Module. This error is related to when error 3 (above) occurs.

Important note on firmware: Pre-intro FW 1.0.0.7 and intro FW 1.0.0.9 display the system error 14.05:00 if
the error occurred in the drying module or the curing module. MR1 release 2.0.0.5 and greater display the
system errors separately depending on the module:

14.05:00 for the drying module

14.17:00 for the curing module.

There are different areas in the circuit where potential system errors could be triggered (red numbers
correspond to paragraphs below):
1. The Heaters Control assembly module (a.k.a. Petisa) has a problem.
2. Poor connections in the drying and curing circuits to the Heaters Control assembly (rear of the printer).
3. An error with the cabling from the Heaters Control assembly to the drying or curing modules (left side of
the printer).
4. Poor connections in the intermediate connectors, below the left arc.
5. Error with in the resistors: incorrect resistance, open circuit.
6. Error with the internal fast-on connections inside the modules. For example, at the level of the Thermal
Switches.

General troubleshooting
The following procedure requires a voltage-current tester (multi-meter) in order to measure voltages of the dryer
and curing modules.
1. Check the voltage of the power lines where the printer is connected to the power source. Nominal voltage
ranges:
For the 60 printer: 220 V 240 V.
For the 42 printer: 200 V 240 V.
2. Check the functionality of the Residual Current Circuit Breakers at the rear of the printer.
a. Set them to the up position.
b. Press the Test button. The breaker should release them and move them to the down position.

Possible errors with the Residual Current Circuit Breakers

Shown below are various possible errors that could occur with the Residual Current Circuit Breakers.

The breaker is constantly released every time it is set to the up position. This would indicate there is a
residual current in the corresponding circuit, drying or curing.

The trigger cannot be physically moved to the up position. This would indicate the circuit breaker is
broken. Replace the circuit breaker; refer to the service manual for the removal and installation procedure.

The test button does not release the breaker. This would indicate there is no current in the line coming to
the circuit breaker. If the voltage in the power line is correct, check the cables from the power connectors
in the printer to the circuit breakers.

IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTICE: Disconnect the printer from all power sources before opening the
electronics cover and checking these circuits.

Check the connections of the cables; disconnect them and reconnect them if necessary.

The circuit breaker could be broken; replace it if necessary.

If everything is correct, continue with the following procedures.

Troubleshooting the drying and curing resistances
The following procedure requires a voltage-current tester (multi-meter) to measure the resistances. In case the
printer has been working, the printer should be allowed enough time (about 1 hr) to cool down for the
resistance values to be correct measured.
IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTICE: Disconnect the printer from all power sources before opening the electronics
cover and checking these circuits.

Step 1: Heaters Control assembly connectors at the back of the printer

The objective of this procedure is to isolate the Heaters Control assembly from the rest of the circuit.

1. Remove the electronics cover to gain access to Heaters Control assembly connectors.

2. Disconnect the top connector shown as 6 pin Drying in the following picture.

Note: This section applies to errors 14.05:00 and 14.10:00.

Possible errors in the connectors of the Heaters Control Assembly

Shown below are various possible errors that could occur with the connections and cables of the Heater
Control Assembly
All the resistances are within specification. This would indicate that the fault is in the Heaters Control
assembly. Replace the Heaters Control assembly (CH955-67052).

Step 2: Troubleshooting the Drying system
The objective of this procedure is to separate the cabling at the left side of the printer from the resistors in the
drying module. Note: This section applies to errors 14.05:00 and 14.10:00.
1. Open the main window.
2. Remove the cable connection covering plate located below the left arc.
3. Disconnect the Drying and Curing systems connectors.

4. From the picture above, notice that the dryer connector has 8 female pins. The drawing below shows the
connector pins numbering by looking from the connection side and holding the clip down.

Possible errors with the Dryer Module

Shown below are different errors that could occur with the Dryer Module
All the resistances are within specification. This would indicate the fault is in the path from the Heaters
Control assembly to the connectors in the arc. It could be a failed cable or the 8 pin connector has
failed.
1. Disconnect and reconnect the connections and redo the measurement from the back. Go back to
Step 1: Heaters Control assembly connectors at the back of the printer to verify the connections.
2. Replace the Dryer module: 60, CH956-67038; 42, CH955-67105; 60 Japan, CQ162-
67002. This will renew the connectors.
3. Replace the left side cabling (Cable Plate Bundle): 60, CH956-67035; 42, CH955-67094. This
will renew the connectors and cables.
One or both measurements in this connector are out of specifications. This would most probable indicate
that a resistor is broken. Replace the Dryer module: 60, CH956-67038; 42, CH955-67105; 60
Japan, CQ162-67002.

Step 3: Troubleshooting the Curing system
The objective of this procedure is to separate the cabling at the left side of the printer from the resistors in the
curing module.
Note: this section applies to errors 14.05:00 (FW 1.0.0.x), 14.17:00 (FW 2.0.0.x) and 14.11:00.
1. Open the main window.
2. Remove the cable connection covering plate below the left arc.
3. Disconnect the Drying and Curing systems connectors.

4. From the picture above, notice that the curing system uses two connectors: one with 4 female pins and
one with 6 female pins. The drawing below shows the connectors pins numbering by looking from the
connection side and holding the clip down.

5. Measure between pins 4 (4 pin) and 6 (6 pin) as shown in the following picture. This corresponds to the
curing-steady-overdrive resistance in ohms. Compare the measurement with the table below.

Value for a 60
printer shown

60 42 60 (Japan)
Max (Ohm) 52.6 65.5 52.2
Nominal (Ohm) 50.1 62.3 49.7
Min (Ohm) 47.6 59.2 47.2

6. Measure between pins 4 (6 pin) and 6 (6 pin) as shown in the following picture. This corresponds to the
curing-steady-output resistance in ohms. Compare the measurement with the table below.

Value for a 60
printer shown

60 42 60 (Japan)
Max (Ohm) 90.3 112.2 89.5
Nominal (Ohm) 86.0 106.8 85.2
Min (Ohm) 81.7 101.5 81.0

Note: Notice that by taking the curing-steady-overdrive resistance and the curing-steady-output resistance
and calculating the parallel equivalent resistance we obtain the value shown in Step 1: Heaters Control
assembly connectors at the back of the printer for curing-steady resistance (nominal values shown):

7. Measure between pins 3 (4 pin) and 6 (6 pin) as shown in the following picture. This corresponds to the
curing-burst-overdrive resistance in ohms. Compare the measurement with the table below.

Value for a 60
printer shown

60 42 60 (Japan)
Max (Ohm) 79.0 86.7 52.2
Nominal (Ohm) 75.2 82.6 49.7
Min (Ohm) 71.5 78.5 47.2

8. Measure between pins 3 (6 pin) and 6 (6 pin) as shown in the following picture. This corresponds to the
curing-burst-output resistance in ohms. Compare the measurement with the table below.

Value for a 60
printer shown

60 42 60 (Japan)
Max (Ohm) 135.4 148.7 89.5
Nominal (Ohm) 128.9 141.6 85.2
Min (Ohm) 122.5 134.6 81.0

NOTE: similarly, by taking the curing-burst-overdrive resistance and the curing-burst-output resistance and
calculating the parallel equivalent resistance we obtain the value shown in Step 1: Heaters Control
assembly connectors at the back of the printer for curing-burst resistance (nominal values shown):

Possible errors with the Curing Module

All the resistances are within specification. This would indicate that the fault is in the path from the Heaters
Control assembly to the connectors in the arc. It could be a cable broken or one of the 4 and 6 pin
connectors that are not working properly.
Disconnect and reconnect the connections, redo the measurement from the back. Go back to Step 1:
Heaters Control assembly connectors at the back of the printer to verify the connections.
Replace the Curing resistors: 60, CH956-67020; 42, CH955-67059; 60 Japan, CQ162-67001.
This will replace the failed connectors of the resistors.
Replace the left side cabling (Cable Plate Bundle): 60, CH956-67035; 42, CH955-67094. This will
renew the connectors and cables.
One or more measurements in these connectors are out of specifications. The most probable cause of this
is a failed resistor, although it could also be a bad connection inside the curing module or a broken
thermal switch.
Disassemble the Curing Fans Cover and check the connections in the electrical block below it. Make
sure that both jumpers are present.
Open the Curing Thermal Switch cover and check the connections.
Check the continuity of the Thermal Switch using the voltage-current tester beep mode. Replace the
Thermal Switch if it is broken (no beep): CH955-67104.
Replace the Curing resistors: 60, CH956-67020; 42, CH955-67059; 60 Japan, CQ162-67001.

Checking the spare parts for curing resistances
It is recommended that the resistance values of the new resistors are checked before they are installed in the
printer, this will avoid having to retest the whole system in the case of a reoccurrence of the same system error.

Checking the spare Curing-Overdrive resistors

The curing-overdrive heater, steady and burst resistors, corresponds to the 4 pin connector shown above.
Shown below is a curing-overdrive heater for a 42 printer.

Take a measurement between the pins 3 and 4 of the 4 pin connector and the return cable, as shown in the
picture below.
