Summa ry
The ce nturies-long aspirations fo r liberat ion from Ottoman rule and the
powerful propaganda has contributed t owards t he M acedonian immigrants to the
Kingdom of S e ria to enrol in the arm ed com panies which were esta i s h e d t he
Seri a gove rm e t d ifi l trat ed in M a cedo ia v before t he comm e c e m e t of
t he B al ka Wa rs.
At the beg i ig of t he Ba l ka Wars, t wo c h etik deta c h mets were
estalis h e d i Macedo i a w hich were u der Seria high comma d : t he Kozjak
detac hme t, ud er t he comma d of t he milit ary commander (voivode) Voji Popovic
- Vuk, which performed activities i t he area stretchig from Skopska Gora to
Kriva Palanka d comprised of 11 compaies; d the Transvardar d etachme t,
under the commad of the military commader (voivode) Milivoje Colak Atic, which
performed activities in the area of Azot, Porecie, Kicevo d Debar and comprised of
16 compaies. The headquarters of the detachmets was consisted of Serbs, i.e.
Serbla officers, while the chetniks d local military commanders (voivode) were
mai ly Mace do ian s. l t he spring of 1913, t he Se rbla high co m mad has
esta i s h ed the Voluta ry Regi m e ts consisted maily of M acedoias.
The Macedo i as wit hi t he Serblan compaies, as well as those i t he
B u l garia co mpa i es were co stat l y i filtrated in t he back of the Ottoman ar my
as va guard of t he Serbla army they were t he fi rst to enter the m ilitary clashes d
hav e ma i l y li berated the villages, as well as m cities. The O tto m a comma d has
h ighly appreciat ed the role of t he d i volunteers in the fights the
b att lefield a ga i st t he Serbla army. Apart from t he est a l is hm e n t of volu tary
com pa nies and village m ilit ia, u m ero u s regional co mp a i es from several villages
have j oi ed the Serblan divisions who acted agaist the Ottoma army.
l some Serbla sources, t he con tribut io of the d i people as
ally i the Ba l ka Wars has re corded wit h argume ts: "The e slave d peoples i
the B a lka s w it h their mil itary act ions as pa rt of the ally war aga i st Tu rkey have
sig i fi ca tly co tr i buted towards the vict ory of t he all ies. The M acedoi as were t he
most umerous participats who have actively participated i t he fights takig t he
side of the allies be i g stro g ly co vic ed that they not doing it i favour of t he
interests of the Balka mo archie s, but for their own national liberatio. The Serbla ,
Bulgarian d Greek histo rias have k owigly cocealed the participatio of the
Macedonian people i the B alka Wars, their milita ry assistance and successes. Until
recently, nothing was written about it. Moreover, these companies were denomi-
nated as Seria, Bulgarian and Greek. ln was all d with the pur pose of denying
