S LICK - TECH

ARCHITECTURE

SUBMITTED BY :

TERMINOLOGY

SLICK- TECH OR HI TECH IS ALSO CALLED STRUCTURAL EXPRESSIONISM

SLICK- TECH ARCHITECTURE APPEARED IN EARLY 1970s. AS A REVAMPED

MODERNISM, AN EXTENSION OF THOSE PREVIOUS IDEAS AIDED BY EVEN
MORE ADVANCES IN TECHNOLOGICAL ACHIEVEMENTS.

ITS CHARACTERISTIC MATERIALS ARE METAL AND GLASS, THAT IT PURPORTS TO

ADHERE TO A STRICT CODE OF HONESTY OF EXPRESSION, THAT IS USUALLY
EMBODIES IDEAS ABOUT INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION, THAT IS IT USES INDUSTRIES
OTHER THAN THE BUILDING INDUSTRY AS SOURCES BOTH OF TECHNOLOGY AND
OF IMAGERY, AND THAT IT PUTS A HIGH PRIORITY ON FLEXIBILITY OF USE.

IDEAS OF HONESTY OF EXPRESSION CARRIED TO AN EXTREME:

-HONESTY OF SERVICES

-HONESTY OF STRUCTURE

-HONESTY OF FUNCTION
Why Britain not America, Germany or china?
THEORIES

a number of theories have been put forward as to why this style

of building should have developed in Britain rather than, say , Germany, America, or Japan.

BRITAINS NOSTALGIA FOR THE GREAT DAYS OF THE EMPIRE.

Perhaps it is nostalgia for the great days when the Empire was serviced and maintained as
much by engineers as by industrialists, politicians, and generals.

WELL-KNOWN BRITISH ENGINEER & ARCHITECT, PUGIN'S STYLE.

Perhaps its a continuation of the tradition of pugin, who demanded that there should be
no features about a building which are not necessary for convenience, construction or
propriety and that all ornament should consist of the essential construction of the
building.

BRITAIN'S PERIOD OF PROGRESS AND PROSPERITY.

Perhaps it follows from the British professional tradition that requires architects to concern
themselves with, and be responsible for, the technical details as well as the spaces, forms,
and surfaces of their buildings. Or perhaps it is merely a reflection of that British literal-
mindedness that sees architecture not as high-flown art or philosophy, but first and
foremost as technique.
Source of inspiration
This trend emerged as a result of technological and industrial progress
with the birth of construction materials, modern and diverse as steel,
glass, plastic.

The exponents of Slick Tech, like the pioneer Modernists of the 1920s,
believe that there is such a thing as the "spirit of the age" and that
architecture has a moral duty to express that spirit.

The High Tech architect sees architecture as a branch of industrial technology.

Functional and efficient, not artistic or symbolic.

The typical High Tech building symbolizes and represents technology rather
than simply using it in the most efficient way possible.
Le Corbusier described the
house as a machine for living
in, but he built houses
that were technologically
primitive and looked nothing
like machines.

High Tech buildings do look like

machines. The machine is more
than a metaphor;
it is a source of technology and of
imagery.

TREATMENT OF . . .

WALL SURFACE : INTRACTIVE FASCADE

ROOF : INNOVATIVE SUPPORTS AND COVERING

FLOOR : INNVOVATIVE SUPPORTS AND COVERING

FENESTRATION : CURTAIN WALL

STRUCTURAL SYSTEM : TENSILE, PNEUMATIC

SIGNAGE : NEW MEDIA

CHARACTERISTIC
Exposed structural elements (trusses, tie rods, struts, etc.) often creating a sort of
"exoskeleton".
Tensile support by cables (often with a tented roof)
Extensive use of glass on exterior
Exposed technical features, such as air vents (especially in works by Richard
Rogers)
Space frames and other structural networks
Glass elevators
Elevator shafts exposed revealing the mechanical features
Conspicuous presence of recent technological innovations
Large atriums (some are very long like gigantic hallways)
Usually lack of reference to historical styles (a continuation of modernism), but
many postmodern buildings have incorporated elements of structural
expressionism
Skyways between buildings and sky bridges (skyways that are very high)
Many have a metallic finish which is most commonly silver or grey; non-metallic
white is also very common; black is more common than in most architectural
styles.

Renault Distribution Centre, Swindon U.K
by Norman Foster
The Renault Centre has been described as the
practices most playful structure.

This is housed within a single enclosure

supported by brightly coloured tubular masts
and arched steel beams, forming a striking
silhouette within its surrounding landscape.

The Centre was commissioned as the French

car manufacturers main UK distribution facility.
In addition to warehousing, it includes a
showroom, training school, workshops, offices
and a staff restaurant.
Enveloped by a continuous PVC membrane
roof, pierced by glass panels at each mast, the
building is also stepped at one end,

The building is a leading example of radical

Bowellism architecture in which the services
for the building, such as ducts and lifts, are
located on the exterior to maximize space in
the interior.
Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris, France (1971-77)
By Richard rogers and Renzo piano
Site location:
one kilometer of Notre dame and louver and on the edge of
the densely populated medieval quarter

A cultural center consisting of four major activities:

museum of modern art
reference library
center for industrial design
center for music and acoustic research

Features:
-massive structural expressionist
-cast exoskeleton
-exterior escalators enclosed in
-transparent tube.
-functional elements outside of the
-building freeing interior space
-the pipes and ducts are all color
coded
Schlumberger Cambridge Research Centre, U.K
By Michael Hopkins and Partners 1985

Schlumberger Cambridge Research is one of

two main research centers operated by
Schlumberger Oilfield Services.

The building comprises two parallel rows of

single-story labs and offices - the 'research
wings' - separated by a long and 27-meter-
wide covered space, providing both large-scale
test areas and a winter garden.

The research wings are conventionally glazed,

while the central space is covered by a Teflon-
coated glass-fiber membrane, suspended from
the steel superstructure. The translucency of
the membrane provides natural light for the
central areas.

attributes

Transparency : glass

Dynamism : Escalators
