Type: MAN

1. Traverse, Connecting Rod, Standard and with

Coned Blades

1.1 Function and Principle

Function:
Turning blades in correct position at wind speeds below regulating range. Turn
blades in correct position at wind speeds above the regulating range to limit the
effect to nominal rate, by means of a crank, bolted to a plate on blade bearings.
Principle:
The unit is bolted on the traverse holder, which is supported in a glycodur bushing in
the front end of the main shaft and fitted with a plastic bushing sliding in a bore in the
rear end of the main shaft.

A pair of sliding shoes guided by a tube with stainless cover prevents traverse from
rotating, when connecting rod is out of line with centre line of the main shaft.

1.2 Turbine Condition at Repair of Traverse/Connecting Rod

At major repairs on the traverse/connecting rod or at repairs over more than one
day, bring the turbine in the following condition before you leave it if is not ready
for operation:

If the connecting rods are dismantled the blades must be locked as described in
section 1.5.1

The locking of the pitch system and/or the blades must be inspected every
week.

1.2.1 Lock the Pitch

1. With the turbine in EMERGENCY STOP the transport fitting is mounted (three long
M24 thread bars and three 517 mm long bushes for V39/V42/V44/V47 and 535 mm
long bushes for V47 with conic hub).
2. The nuts are tightened with a torque of min. 100 Nm.
3. Or with the turbine in EMERGENCY STOP three pcs of 740 or 758 mm (new type)
long M24 thread bars (706615) are mounted through the traverse into the three thread
holes in the blade hub.
4. The thread bars have to be supplied with nuts and big washers on both the in- and the
outside of the traverse.
5. Tighten the nuts against the traverse.

1.2.2 Rotor Locking System

The rotor locking system is not mounted.
1.2.2.1 Hydraulic pressure
1. Release the hydraulic pressure from the system, (Pls. see Item no. 943064, how to be
done)

Page: 2 of 32
Item no.: 943055.R10 Date: 2005-05-13

1.4 Bearing Flange for Traverse Holder's Glycodur Bushing

Stop the turbine, press <PAUSE>, mount security bolt in disc brake or the
rotor locking system, press <EMERGENCY STOP>.
Check that there are no cracks weakening the nose cone around the bolts to
the nose cone and check that the nose cone is correctly fitted before entering
the nose cone.
When the pitch system is moved by operating via the servicebox, you must
under no circumstances be inside the front flat of the hub as an EMERGENCY
STOP brings the traverse and cranks to the front side of the hub.

1.4.1 Mounting of Transport Fitting

1. With the turbine in EMERGENCY STOP mount the transport fittings to the traverse
(3 long M24 threaded rods and 3 pcs. 517 mm long bushings).
2. Tighten the nuts well on the threaded rods.

1.4.2 Dismounting of Traverse Holder on Traverse

1. Dismount the inner hex. head bolts (Pos. 4, Figure 6) on traverse cover (Pos. 6,
Figure 6).
2. Look in section 13, page 4 to see how to release the hydraulic pressure from the
system and how to be able to move the piston in the hydraulic cylinder. Be sure the
pressure is fully released ant disconnect the hydraulic pump motor.
3. Press traverse holder back with 2 pcs. M12 set screws in traverse cover and pull the
bearing house back in carrying tube. Traverse holder is now placed 180 mm outside
the bearing flange (Pos. 15, Figure 6).
4. Tie end of traverse holder up to one or two of the tubes to transport fitting to prevent
it from dropping down with front end when bearing flange is withdrawn.

1.4.3 Dismounting of Bearing Cover

1. Dismount the hex. head bolts (Pos. 11, Figure 6), holding the bearing flange (Pos.
15, Figure 6) on the main shaft and withdraw the bearing flange. Use, if necessary, 2
M12 set screws in the dismantling threads.
2. Place a distance piece between traverse holder and hub to prevent traverse holder
to drop down when bearing cover is withdrawn. Weight of bearing cover app. 8 kg.

1.4.4 Check of Parts, mounting of new Glycodur Bushing

1. As mentioned the clearance between the glycodur bushing and the traverse holder
should be reported to Vestas. If it is decided to check and maybe replace the plastic
bushing of the traverse holder. You can find a further description of the method to
dismount it in Item no. 943056.
2. Check the chrome layer of the traverse holder (Pos. 5, Figure 6) and report the result
of the investigation to Vestas if it is damaged.
3. Mount a replacement bearing flange or a new glycodur bushing and mount the
flange again. Fill out the holes in the inner surface of the glycodur bushing with
grease before mounting. Tighten the hex. head bolts smeared with mineral oil under
the hex. head bolt head and on the thread. Torque wrench setting: See Figure 6.
4. Dismount the transport fittings.
