Math in the Online World

I am learning to understand how background experiences impact an individuals relationship

with mathematics:

1. https://www.youcubed.org/think-it-up/ideas-of-giftedness-hurt-students/
Students do not benefit from being labeled gifted or not gifted
Succeeding at math involves hard work and persistence, not innate talent
The idea of innate talent is produces damaging results in math, as well as other subjects
What I took from this article is that labeling students as gifted or not gifted can be
detrimental to their learning

2. https://mangomath.com
Making math fun and engaging for students getting students to enjoy math at a young
age so that they dont have negative feelings towards it throughout school
3 easy steps to making math happy for your students: Make big bold statements,
disguise learning, pair students
The lessons not only help students learn and practice those essential skills needed to
succeed in math but it teaches those critical thinking skills that makes students life-long
learners by teaching them how to think analytically and conceptually

3. http://www.jumpstart.com/parents/resources/math-resources
Math worksheets, lesson plans, games and activities with real world topics
Resources for students, parents and teachers and ideas on how to make math lessons
more fun
Resources for students who dislike math and for students who love it
Making math practice fun and have children working with numbers more than they
usually would
Negative feelings towards math can create a mental block that will make the subject
feel more difficult this website has many strategies that I could use to help children
develop a positive relationship with math at a young age

4. http://www.learner.org/interactives/dailymath/index.html
Includes a ton of resources, videos, lesson plans and interactives
Resources for the student as a learner and the teacher as a learner (professional
development)
All about math in daily life cooking by numbers, home decorating, population growth
I would like to do a lesson or unit on cooking by numbers incorporates learning math
with baking cookies! What student wouldnt love that?

I am learning to value real world math applications in classroom practice:

5. http://www.yummymath.com/birds-eye-of-activities/
Real world math activities ex. giant pumpkin how many pies would it make? ratios,
fractions, central tendencies
Potential for place based learning taking math outside the classroom field trip to the
pumpkin patch
Students would likely enjoy the time lapse video of the giant pumpkin growing and it
could also lead into a lesson on gardening cross-curricular learning
Many more engaging math activities designed towards students interests collecting
the most candy, Oreo stuffiness, monster cake, lets get rich, do the best movies make
the most money, Pixar vs. DreamWorks, which is the best deal, pizza party, etc.

6. http://www.yummymath.com/2016/how-much-does-it-cost-to-go-back-to-school-2/
An exercise that teaches students about money management and financial literacy
Includes a sample checklist for back to school supplies
Students will decide what supplies are necessary, estimate how much everything will
cost, confer with partners or groups, then research the actual costs
Estimating, researching, reasoning, calculating, and communication skills

7. https://www.practicalmoneyskills.ca/games/
Games that teach students practical money skills ex. Eds Bank, Financial Soccer, Peter
Pigs Money Counter, Money Metropolis: Spending and Saving is a World of Fun, Road
Trip to Savings
Different games for different age groups
Incorporates video games and learning students may not even realize they are
learning
Also includes several lesson plans on financial literacy
I could teach a unit on financial literacy and as a reward at the end of the unit, go to the
computer lab to play some of these games
I could also set up our own class currency where students earn and save money and
use it to buy prizes

8. http://www.mymoneycoach.ca/financial-literacy/financial-education-lesson-plans-for-
teachers
Teaching students financial literacy having the knowledge, skills and confidence to
make responsible financial decisions
Includes lesson plans, assessment rubric, and prescribed learning outcomes from the BC
curriculum
Available in English and French
Grades 4 7

9. http://www.scholastic.com/browse/lessonplan.jsp?id=1561
Plan, save, succeed lesson plan introduces the importance of budgeting to students
grades 6 8
Students will understand how a budget is created and how it can support good financial
decision making (financial literacy)
Students will understand that mastery of fractions, decimals, and percentages can help
address real-world situations (financial literacy and math)
Students will begin to consider the role saving plays in financial planning
Includes worksheets

10. http://www.scholastic.com/teachers/unit/financial-literacy-everything-you-need
Financial literacy everything you need
Includes activities, games, and unit plans
Creating a classroom economy unit plan students study economics and economic
principles by maintaining a class bank and store

11. http://www.scholastic.com/teachers/article/truth-about-kids-money
Article that explains how to talk to kids about money with specific instructions for each
grade level
Would be useful to come back to this article before teaching a new grade level to ensure
the lesson is age appropriate
Includes online and book resources
From bank cards to interest rates, teach the real-life math skills all kids need to learn

12. http://www.educationworld.com/a_curr/mathchat/mathchat019.shtml
Answering the question students often ask when are we ever going to use this in real
life?
Provides links to several activities that demonstrate the relevance of math in everyday
life and teaches relevant skills
For example, the Lemonade Stand online game could be used to teach students how to
successfully run their own businesses using their math skills
Students could use that knowledge to run their own lemonade stands
Also includes a teacher essentials tab with a page dedicated to new teachers with a
ton of useful articles ex. working with difficult people, managing student talking, etc.
This website would be a great resource for student activities but also for professional
development tons of tips and information for teachers (and specifically new teachers)

13. http://ed.ted.com/lessons?category=mathematics
Sections on algebra, data analysis and probability, geometry, measurement, numbers
and operations
Includes lessons and instructions to:
o Find a video
o Add questions, discussion prompts, and additional resources
o Share your lesson with your students
o Track their progress
Ted Ed videos could be used as a hook at the beginning of a unit or lesson
14. https://www.wolframalpha.com/examples/Math.html
Students could use this site to self-check their work
Includes step by step solutions, not just the answer helps students to understand
where they went wrong so they can learn from their mistakes
Teachers could use this site to check work when they are unsure if an answer is correct
or not

I am learning to value open-ended math tasks in classroom practice:

15. https://ateacherswonderings.wordpress.com/2014/09/13/open-ended-tasks-and-
questions-in-mathematics/
There is no fixed answer (many possible answers)
Solved in different ways and on different levels (accessible to mixed abilities)
Empower students to make their own mathematical decisions and make room for own
mathematical thinking
Develop reasoning and communication skills
Includes instructions on how to create open-ended questions and how to turn a closed
problem into an open-ended one
Includes instructions for marking open-ended problems
This website could be a useful tool for creating open-ended questions, turning closed-
ended questions into open-ended ones and scoring them

16. http://poweroften.ca
Remember facts in a fun and interesting way
Help students develop pattern recognition and a problem solving mindset
These games could be played online or if there isnt access to a computer, several of
them could be recreated simply using paper or recycled materials
Students play and practice math with one another collaborative learning
Includes a teaching toolkit with resources for smart boards and videos

17. https://www.khanacademy.org/math
Excellent resource for teachers and students
Very user friendly and well organized
Tons of useful videos that could be used to introduce a topic or provide clarity
Students could also use this website on their own to help further their understanding of
topics they struggle with
