Christmas bling
A fear of ladders and four days of preparation was
worth it for Ballan Post Office and Springfields
Garage, who have taken out this years Christmas light
competition.
The Ballan Lions Club ran the Ballan main street
competition for local businesses in the lead up to
Christmas.
Andrew Smith, from Ballan Post Office, said he had
decorated the store for the last two years.
Each year, we try to give something back to the
community by getting into the spirit of Christmas, he
said.
Im unfortunately not brave enough to get up on
the ladder to actually put the lights up, but my friend
Chris Tabb from Ballanee Electrical did the job for me.
Im a big kid at heart and who doesnt love seeing the
flashing Christmas lights each year?.
The Lions Club offered $200 to the local business with
the best display of lights; however, competition judge
and Moorabool Shire Mayor Paul Tatchell couldnt pick
just one.
Instead, he awarded the prize to both businesses and
matched the prize money, too.
Rebecca Treadwell, from Springfields Garage, said
the prize money would be donated to Ballan District
Health and Cares Christmas Gift Appeal.
We dont [put the lights up] for the money, we do it for
the whole community, she said.
We store all the decorations away from the store, so it
takes three to four days to bring them over, clean them
and put them up. Its a lot of preparation, but the older
people seem to really love that we take the time to set
it all up, and the kids just love looking in through the
windows at night. It lights up the whole street.
BDH&Cs Christmas Gift Appeal allows residents to
donate an unwrapped gift to those who need it.
Ms Treadwell said Springfields Garage would also be
donating another $100 to the cause.
Christmas is about giving, she said.
There are people in the community that may not have
any family or friends during the Christmas period and
it would be nice for them to receive a gift and know that
someone else in the community is thinking of them.

presented with their award at the Ballan Lions Club
Christmas Twilight Market on Friday December 15.

Lets keep history alive;

it would be an Honour

Local historians are seeking
information on Honour Boards
and memorials relating to those
who served in the First World
War.
The information will help
chronical the stories of over
460 servicemen with ties to the
Moorabool region.
Relevant memorials can in-
clude Honour rolls, parks, gates,
church windows and obelisks
in areas such as Myrniong, Coi-
madai, Rowsley, Balliang, Mer-
rimu, Greendale, Toolern Vale
and Bullengarook.
The information will be com-
piled into a book written by
the Bacchus Marsh and District
Historical Society.
President, Bruce Carboon said
the project had been an inter-
esting and exciting journey so
far.
Katrina Bradfield and Katrina
Lyle, along with a number of
other society members such as
Chris Bronchinetti, have been
working tirelessly together to
gather as much information as
possible, he said.
We are now at the point
where we are looking at appen-
dices and trying to locate all
of the memorials and Honour
rolls, or anything that has been
placed in the community as a
reminder of the soldiers who
served in the First World War.
Mr Carboon said while a num-
ber of discoveries have been
made, there were still unan-
swered questions.
Its been a bit of a discovery
process as we have found that
some things have been lost. For
example, we found a photo-
graph of an Honour roll for the
Bacchus Marsh Concentrated
Milk Company, which was once
located where the shopping
centre now stands.
The photo is of this big beau-
tiful wooden Honour roll with
40-plus names on it, but now
that the whole factory is gone;
so has the Honour roll. All we
have is the photo and that is
something that wed like to
[show] to the public to see if
they know anything about it.

ed an old Honour board paint-
ed on the wall of the Austral-
ian Natives Association (ANA)
building (154 Main Street Bac-

The well-known community
member was the owner of a lo-
cal boot-making business, the
choirmaster at the Presbyte-
rian Church, a member of the
local fire brigade and a keen
cricketer.
Mr Carboon said each and
every story is very personal.
We are slowly building up
a portfolio and this is a plea
for more information, as the
greatest asset we have is the
memories of the people in our
community, he said.

left behind at a business, wed
love to get in contact with you
and locate the item, or at least
make a record of where it is and
the peoples names on them.

Show girls 60-years on

Its been 60 years since the
inception of the first Miss
Show Girl Competition, and
Ballan sisters Anne and Judy
have reminisced on all the
glitz and glamour.
Judith Hodgon (nee Hol-
mes) was 24-years-old when
she won the Miss Boort sash
in 1966. She wore a floral
dress and a hat with white
flowers, that blew away in
the wind.

She donned the royal blue
sash and carried the crystal
vase that was given to the
winner each year.
The annual competition
saw a qualifying heat held
at most country agricultural
shows prior to the annual
Royal Melbourne Show.
However, when Judith ar-
rived at the city show, she
found out she was too old to
compete.
It was disappointing, she
said.
But [the Boort Agricultural

pionship with their perfor-

Bacchus Marsh Pony Club

dressed in costume as they
performed a synchronised
dance routine with their
horses.
The performance went
for around six-minutes and
was choreographed by their
coach Breanna Aldred, she
said.
The girls practised at least
twice a week in the lead up
to the event, sometimes on
the ground and sometimes
on the horses.
Costumes and designs were
created by Jamie Dignan
from Sign Perfection and
Abbies mum, Karen Salt.
Ms Emerson said the team
won convincingly.
The girls had competed
before, they won their zone
competition last year with
their ride to AC/DC, which
was super cool, but they
didnt place at state, so it was
really exciting to win this
year, she said.
The preparation in the lead
up to the competition can be
difficult as youve got four
kids and four horses that
all have to coordinate to-
gether and out of their own
environment.
A lot of effort goes into
these competitions, so it was
great to see the girls win.
The winning team received
sashes, inscribed medallions
and the Ian Wardell Memo-
rial Trophy, which is named
after a life member of both
PCAV and Bacchus Marsh
Pony Club.
Mr Wardells love of horses
started in 1976 when he took
his son and their first pony
to Bacchus Marsh Pony Club.
He was shortly joined by his
two daughters, and in 1977,
he joined the committee
and was appointed Deputy
Chair a position he held for
nine-years.
Mr Wardell sadly passed
away in 2008. His wife, Mar-
garet presented the winning
musical team their trophy on
Saturday November 25.
Ms Emerson said the girls
were really rapt to take out
Ians award. final under coach Wes Burr.
They were so excited that
Margaret was there and was
clearly proud of their win,
she said.
It is a wonderful achieve-
ment for the kids, the club
and the Wardells. Especially
as one of the horses Banjo a Darley junior. His volunteer work soon
was previously owned and
trained by Ians grandson.
The Ian Wardell Memorial
Musical Ride saw 12-teams
of four riders go head to
head for the top prize. It was
held at the Pony Club Vic-
toria Equestrian Centre at
Gladysdale.
Ballan Pony Club also qual-
ified and came sixth in the
same competition.

Mr Stewart has spent 62-years transitioning
through several leagues. He is part of the
history of the Melton and Bacchus Marsh
DFL, Bacchus Marsh FL, Ballarat & Bacchus
Marsh DFL, Riddell District FL, Central
Highlands FL and finally the BFNL.
From just 10-years-old, Mr Stewart offered
a helping hand to the (then) Darley Magpies,
learning the art of rubbing and taping joints.
He witnessed the Darley premierships of
1955, 1957 and 1959, and in the years that
followed, he trained with the newly formed
reserves team and was selected for the senior
team on a number of occasions.
In 1969, he played the majority of his games
in the reserves, taking out the years Best
and Fairest and going on to play in the grand Graeme Stewart with his medal for 62-years
as a volunteer with the Darley FNC.
The 1970s saw him continue to help out at Photos - DFNC

first and last name.

Taylah and Taylor Farrugia are
not related, yet their names are
exactly the same.

both their first and last name,
is just so rare.
The 12 students were present-
ed a Principals Award at the
schools end of year assembly
on Friday December 15.
We wanted to congratulate
them for putting up with the
confusion all year, Ms Val-
lence said.
We would often call one of
the students to the office and
they would both come, so we
had to start being really spe-
cific and say what classroom
they were from, which was
hard when it came to Taylor
and Taylah as theyre in the
same class.
Taylor and Taylah Farrugia are
both in grade-six. Fortunately,
Taylor came to the school as a
grade prep and Taylah just this
year.
As a result, they were given
the nicknames Old Taylor and
New Taylah.
Old Taylor said despite the
confusion, it was all a bit of fun.
Taylah and I are actually best
friends now and our science
teacher Mr Cattlin even named
us after old and new cars, so
Im the 1990 Corolla and Taylah
is the Lamborghini.
In a funny twist, Old Taylor
and New Taylahs fathers both
have the same first, middle and
last name, too.

The body of a 35-year-old hiker has been
found in the Werribee Gorge State Park
following a major air and land search on
Monday.
David Occhipinti, from Noble Park North,
intended to complete a 10-kilometre walk
around the Werribee Gorge Circuit Track on
Sunday afternoon (December 10).
Family and friends alerted authorities to
his disappearance after he failed to return
home. Images posted to Facebook showed
Mr Occhipinti had been at the parks western
lookout at around 3:30pm.
Police located the mans vehicle in a car park
overnight and the Police Air Wing conducted
a flyover of the gorge in the early hours of
Monday morning.
Bacchus Marsh SES unit controller David
Lambrick said rescue crews attended the
Gorge around 6am Monday.
Crews were called in from Bacchus Marsh,
Hepburn, Brimbank, Sunbury, Wyndham
and Melton. We searched the ground
intensely, walking through the difficult
terrain in the Werribee Gorge, he said.
Some of the individual volunteers would
have covered about 20-kilometres around
the tracks looking for signs of him. Under
the direction of Police Search and Rescue, we
attended the scene from 6am to about 8pm.
Mr Occhipinti was a semi-experienced hiker
and is believed to have visited Werribee
Gorge State Park at least twice before.
Mr Lambrick said rescue crews found the
mans backpack in an inaccessible area at
around 7pm on Monday.
Mr Occhipintis body was located nearby at
the base of the Gorge sometime later.
A report will be prepared for the Coroner.

comfortably in a natural po-
sition, turn around, stand, sit
and stretch with clearance.
Dr Walker said rest breaks
are also important to allow
pets to stretch their legs.
However, ensure they are
safely under control in a new
environment, both on the
road and when you arrive
at your destination; and that
your pet is wearing identifi-
cation, so it can be reunited
if lost.
For the pets left at home, at
a registered kennel or cat-
tery, or with a reputable pet
sitting service, owners are
encouraged to provide a list
of requirements and a copy
of their pets medical history.
Dr Walker also suggested
writing a letter of permis-
sion that states exactly who
is looking after the animal
in their absence and instruc-
tions for an emergency.
Preparation goes a long
way to ensuring both you
and your pets enjoy the holi-
day season, she said.

homes were auctioned with
64 per cent selling.
At least 110 auctions were
held in Geelong West and
Highton this year with clear-
ance rates of 84 and 78 per
cent respectively.
Other regional areas experi-
encing high auction volumes
this year include Torquay,
with 69 auctions and a clear-
ance rate of 78 per cent; Gee-
long, with 67 auctions and
a 75 per cent clearance rate;
and East Geelong, with 66

The Centre held a twilight meet last Friday evening due to
the State Relay Championships being conducted on Saturday.
It was an exciting evening of athletics.Firstly, Under 9 athlete
Nelson Banigo (Eagles) broke a 47 year old record. Nelson
ran 14.49 secs for the 100 metres into a blustery head wind.
The previous record, held by Ricky Spurr was 14.70 secs.
Next up in the 200 metre event, Nelson flew around the bend
and stormed down the straight to record his second record
for the night and taking 1.16 seconds off his own Under 9 200
metre record, running a new time of 29.80 secs.
During competition the Centre had a special visit from
Santa, where he met with each athlete.
Finally, Sadie Jones produced some fantastic results for the
night recording 4PBs and being awarded the PB Star of the
Week.
On Saturday the Bacchus Marsh Centre was represented by
seven teams at the 2017 State Relay Championships held at
Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park. Under 15s in their final State Relays. Photos - submitted
It was a long day for the Centre, having a team in the first
and last event of the day. First up on the track were the Under
15 girls competing in their final Relay Championships. The
girls gave it their best on the day and finished 8th in the 4x200
metre heat. Next up were the Under 9 Boys in the 4x200
metre heat. All boys ran exceptionally well, finishing 3rd in
their heat and progressing to the final. In the final, the boys
put in a great performance and crossed the finish line in 5th
place. After the lunch break the Under 12 mixed team ran in
the 4x100 metre event and placed 5th in their heat. The girls
Under 10 were up next for the Marsh in the 4x100 metre and
crossed the line 4th in their heat, narrowly missing the final.
The Under 9 girls were very excited to compete at State and
enjoyed their opportunity placing 5th in their 4x100 metre
heat. The Under 9 boys returned to the track, this time for
their 4x100 metre heat, the boys produced another fantastic
race storming home to record a 3rd place and progressing
to the final. The final was a tough race with some amazing
performances from such young athletes. The Bacchus Marsh
boys once again finished strongly to place 6th in the State.
The Under 9s backed up once again to run in the final event
for the day, the Medley relay. All boys ran extremely well
placing 7th overall. The long day took its toll on the youngest
athletes as they were totally exhausted finishing the days
racing at 7pm
Congratulations also to the coaches; Under 9 boys & 12s Jorge
Ide; Under 9 girls Vicki Cook; Under 10 girls Chantelle Estlick;
and Under 15 girls Phil Way. Without the commitment and
dedication to coach these athletes, these kids would not get
the opportunity to compete in Regional and State events.
Little Aths will now break for the Christmas period and will
return to competition on Saturday 13 January. The following
Saturday, January 20 will be the Inter Centre Round to be
held at Werribee commencing at 4pm. All BMLAC athletes
must register via their email link. Nelson breaking the 100m record.

The Darley Lions sit half a
game outside the First XI top
four at the Christmas break
after another split-points
decision against one of the
competitions top sides.
After scoring an even 200
and having ladder leaders
Golden Point 1/10 at the
close of the first days play,
not a ball was bowled on
the second day to leave the
match frustratingly declared
as a draw.
Match umpires Ron Bedford
and Peter Mackay declared
the pitch too soft to play
on, declaring what would
have been a very interesting
second day of play closed
after Roshan Anuruddhas
maiden club century put
the Lions in a competitive
position.
The Lions next match will
be another massive one, as
they take on fourth-placed
Mt Clear at Darley Park in a
two-day match starting on
Saturday 13 January.
In other club matches,
Darleys Second XI sit
third on the ladder at the
Christmas break after a 16-
run win over Ballan.
After making 146 last
week then having Ballan
4/8 at stumps, Ballans
middle order fought hard
to bat themselves back into
the game, but last weeks
whirlwind strike meant that
the target was a bridge too
far, being dismissed for 130.
Dayle Locke returned
innings-best figures of
3/30, with all of his wickets
coming on the first day,
spinner Sajitha Rupasinghe
took 3/46, Drew Locke 2/11
and Mitch Ward 2/10.
Darleys Third XI didnt
share the same success,
losing to East Ballarat by
seven wickets.

After knocking up 278 in
the first week, the Lions
bowlers found the going
tough on the small Russell
Square ground, and took
just three wickets before the
Hawks passed their total in
the 71st over of the innings.

Lions leading only Brown
Hill on the ladder at the
Christmas break.
The Lions Fourth XI
finished the 2017 phase of the
season on a high, defeating
Lucas in a Twenty20 fixture
by 46 runs leaving them
in seventh position on the
ladder at the break.
After winning the toss and
batting, the Lions made an
impressive 3/169 from their
20 overs. Clint Salisbury led
the way with an unbeaten
74, which included eight
fours and two sixes, and
shared a 66 run second
wicket partnership with
skipper Tim Gallagher who
fell one run short of another
half century, with six fours
and two sixes in his innings
of 49.
In response, Lucas couldnt
build up the required
partnerships to make a
legitimate claim at chasing
down Darleys total, losing
wickets at regular intervals
to finish on 123 after just 18.4
overs.
Steven Cornford copped
a bit of stick, with 45 runs
coming from his four overs,
but with three wickets
next to his name, his spell
proved invaluable. Tahleah
Ticehurst (2/28) and
Jason Randall (2/13) also
put together impressive
bowling, with Paul Ticehurst
claiming a wicket in his only
over.

Old School Drag Racing

Im going through the IGA Supermarket in Ballan,
the check-out chick Pauline says to me I know a
guy in Bacchus Marsh that drag races, you should
do a story on him. Im always looking for a story
so
This racer shall be known only as Ash for the story
(security is of prime importance when discussing
classic or race vehicles in this medium). Ash lives
in Bacchus Marsh and drag races a 55 Chev Belair
in the Vintage-Gas class.
Ash is a second-generation drag racer following
the footsteps of his father who raced from the early
60s to 2000. It was inevitable that he would end up
racing cars as all he did as a kid was follow dad
around and help with the drag cars. Ash says its
kept him on the straight and narrow because he
knew how much these things cost and he knew
hed need a decent job to afford one. But the tables
have turned full circle; now his dad helps Ash out
at the track and at home, as does his wife, making it
a real family affair.
Vintage Gas cars are based on pre-1970 American
and Australian vehicles and pre-1948 hotrods.
Basic specs for the class include; All vehicles must
have a prominently displayed name on both sides;
steel or period style wheels only; single straight
front axle preferred; body scoops and mods must
be from the era; no streamlining; chop-tops are
allowed; bodies can be fibreglass replicas; exhausts
are open headers (awesome!); no full underbody
exhaust system; engines from the period only;
alloy heads allowed; no electronic fuel injection;
automatic or manual gearboxes but must have
a manual operating clutch if running a manual
gearbox; pump and alcohol fuels only; front doors
must be able to be opened from either inside or out.
Ashs car called Haywire is based on the 1950s
American class and has a raised front end, the
theory was to get more weight transferred onto
the rear wheels for more traction; it doesnt really
make much difference, but the class is based on the
nostalgic appearance, so raised it is. The car has a
full roll-cage running all original steel panels and
front & rear glass; side windows are Perspex and
still functional.
Haywire runs a 383 Chev engine making 550
horsepower, running on normal pump fuel, built
by Ash himself. Ash says the engine runs all the
good gear as it regularly sees 8000+ rpm. MDT in
Bacchus Marsh built the Powerglide transmission,
with a 6000-rpm dominator torque converter. Diff
is Ford 9 with 4:86 gears built by Paul Rogers at
PRPT in Greendale. Tyres are 11.5 wide Mickey
Thompson slicks. Ash and his fellow Australian
Nostalgia Racers undertook all the chassis mods
themselves.
The best time the car has run the mile is 10.7
seconds @ 126 mph, but there is a new engine
about to be fitted, built by Brett Niddrie from BNR
Engines in Melton. Ash is hoping for an excess
of 1000 horsepower that should send the old girl
down the track in the high 8 seconds at roughly 150
mph!
Ash says he races with a great bunch of like-minded
guys in the club Australian Nostalgia Racers, the
club is into its 20th year and has started promoting
its own 3 round series penciled-in for 2018; Round Ash does a burnout.
1 in Portland on Feb 10, round 2 at Swan Hill in
mid May and round 3 at Mildura last weekend in
August. The Australian Nostalgia Racers dont
just have gassers, they have classes to cater for all
vehicles pre-1970 including front engine dragsters,
altereds, vintage motorcycles and funny cars.
Ash says that the spectators give them awesome
feedback; everyone loves the show (images of Victor
Bray in his Castrol Chev come to mind). The annual
August Mildura Nostalgia meeting is an awesome
2-day weekend where everybody brings the family
and camps at the track. The track staff are fantastic
and organise catering for the racers and campers.
The Saturday is the race day, followed by the
Sunday funday and if youre lucky you can score
a ride in a gasser down the track.
