[WATERFRONT PARK DEVELOPMENT PROJECT]

A RESEARCH REGARDING ON THE STUDY OF THE REVITALIZATION OF MAGSAYSAY PARK AND STA. ANA
WHARF THAT PROMOTES ARCHITECTURAL RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE ENVIRONMENT AND ECOLOGY,
ENERGY EFFICIENCY, AND COMMERCIAL ESTABLISHMENTS THROUGH ARCHITECTURAL PLANNING.
PROJECT STUDY
INTRODUCTION

DEFINITION
WATERFRONT PARK IS A PARK WITH A LAND OR DOCKING
AREA THAT IS ADJACENT TO BODIES OF WATER SUCH AS A RIVER, LAKE AND
OCEAN. WATERFRONT PARKS ARE USUALLY CONSIDERED AS LANDMARKS OR
DISTRICTS IN CITIES SO AS TO PROVIDE FOR TOURISM AND RELAXATION FOR
CITIES.
IT ALSO FUNCTIONS AS COMMERCIAL DOCKING OF PRIVATE
COMMERCIAL SEA VESSELS.

FUNCTION
A WATERFRONT IS OFTEN THE FACADE OF A CITY.
HOWEVER, MANY URBAN WATERFRONTS NO LONGER CONNECT TO THE
WORLD THROUGH THEIR FORMER TRANSPORTATION AND ECONOMIC
FUNCTIONS. WITHOUT THIS BUSTLE, CITIES ARE INCREASINGLY LEFT
EXPOSED, CHALLENGED TO REVEAL THEIR PERSONALITY AND VALUES IN
THESE UNUSED SPACES. INCREASINGLY, WATERFRONTS ARE WHERE CITIES
ARE FORCED TO STOP THEIR TREADMILL OF ECONOMIC ACTIVITY,
DEVELOPMENT AND TRANSPORTATION INFRASTRUCTURE, AND FIGURE OUT
WHO THEY ARE.
WATERFRONT AND PARK DEVELOPMENT CHARACTERISTICS

PROJECT OBJECTIVE
THE OVERALL AIM OF THIS PROJECT IS TO REVITALIZE
THE EXISTING MAGSAYSAY PARK INCLUDING THE OLD
ADJACENT STA. ANA WHARF THAT SERVES AS COMMERCIAL
DOCKING AREA OF PRIVATE AND COMMERCIAL SEA VESSELS.
THE MONUMENT OF THE PARK MUST BE RETAINED AND THE
REST OF THE OTHER AREAS SHALL BE REDEVELOPED AND
REDEFINED THAT SERVES THE PEOPLE WITH COMFORT,
RELAXATION, ACTIVITIES, RECREATION AND ENTERTAINMENT
WHILE REPRESENTING DAVAO CITY AS ITS ICON FOR TOURISM.

PROJECT CHARACTERISTICS
WITH DAVAO CITY AS ITS BASIS, THE MAIN
CONCEPT OF THE WATERFRONT DEVELOPMENT IS TROPICAL
FILIPINO ARCHITECTURE. THIS DESIGN CONCEPT SHOULD
INCORPORATE LARGE SPACES THAT CAN HELD LARGE ACTIVITIES
AND FESTIVITIES FOR FILIPINO CELEBRATIONS SUCH AS
KADAYAWAN FESTIVALS, ARAW NG DABAW AND THE LIKE.
BEING THE ICON OF TOURISM OF DAVAO, THE DESIGN SHALL
PRESERVE THE OLD SCULPTURES AND ICON OF THE OLD
MAGSAYSAY PARK SO AS TO REPRESENT THE HISTORY OF ITS
AREA IN THE HISTORY OF DAVAO. ROAD NETWORKS AND
OTHER SPACES SHOULD PROVIDE GOOD EASE OF CIRCULATION
FOR THE PEOPLE AND VEHICLES WHILE MAINTAINING ITS
SECURITY AND ORDER THROUGHOUT THE PARK. EXPECTED
DAILY USERS SHALL RANGE FROM AGES 1-30 YEARS OLD
WHICH ARE CHILDREN, STUDENTS, TEENAGERS, ADOLESCENTS
AND FAMILIES. THE PARK SHALL ALSO PROVIDE NICE AND
ATTRACTIVE LIGHTING WHICH CAN ATTRACT PEOPLE FROM

AFAR WHILE IT CAN ALSO PREVENT CRIMES ON CORNERS OF

THE AREAS. WITH THE BODIES OF WATER ADJACENT TO THE
PARK, WIND DIRECTION AND SPEED SHALL BE TAKEN INTO
HUGE CONSIDERATION SO AS TO CONTROL TEMPERATURE IN
THE SURROUNDING AREAS. FINALLY THE STA. ANA WHARF
SHALL BE AN AREA FOR COMMERCIAL DOCKING AND WILL BE
REVITALIZED SO AS TO MAINTAIN CLEANLINESS FOR THE
DOCKING AREA.

SITUATIONAL ANALYSIS

LOCATION AND STATUS

Magsaysay Park is currently located

along Leon Garcia St. and adjacent to Sta. Ana Wharf.
With this observation, Sta. Ana Wharf is perfect for Sea
Transportation for Samal Island which we can benefit
for tourist exploration. It is now currently used as
docking and transportation for people and supplies.
Supplies are delivered through neighboring cities and
transportation are usually on Samal Island for tourists.

WHARF ANALYSIS

From my analysis on the site, Sta. Ana Wharf is

not maintaining cleanliness and there is no shed that can
protect the people from the heat. The Wharf is publicly
accessible to everyone which is not recommended.
PARK ANALYSIS

Currently, the Magsaysay Park is located adjacent to

Leon Garcia St of which will lead to the entrance of the park. There lies
the fruit vendors which they sell goods there. From that point onwards,
the walkway leads to many parts of the park including Kiosks, parking
area, the monument and etc. Several garbage arent thrown to their
proper trashcans and are somewhat dirty. The Park is mostly is used by
foreign tourist, families and friends for afternoon relaxation. From my
observations, it is also mostly used by students who practice activities
from school like cheer dances, musical activities and etc. The
monument of Ramon Magsaysay is placed at the center of the park
which is served as its marker. People usually sit near the base of the
marker where they also hangout.

STATEMENT OF GOALS AND OBJECTIVES
The overall goal of this project is to redevelop Magsaysay Park including the adjacent
old Sta. Ana hart into a new and timeless venue that serves families, friends, teenagers, adults, kids, and
tourists. A venue that encourages socializing and vitality. A venue wherein the people will feel secure
while enjoying their time in the park. A venue that gives emphasis to the socio-cultural activities of man
while also incorporating nature into the design itself. A design that blends in the Philippine environment
while still managing to be a city icon. Also, efficiency, green energy, and energy conservation are few of
the many important design factors for the park. This redevelopment aims to transform and evolve the
park into a new city and tourist icon that will proudly carry with its design the Filipino culture and
capture the soul of nature and Philippine environment.

THE SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES OF THIS PROJECT ARE TO:

Develop a design that incorporates comfort, security, and vitality.

Encourage socializing throughout the park by means of providing facilities that
influences gatherings.
Ensure proper security in the whole area of the site.
Provide facilities that will cater activities and design areas that will be used for
recreation and fun.
Give proper emphasis to the social-cultural activities/human behaviors of man in
developing a concept.
Incorporate nature into the design and utilize architectural conservation.
Develop a design for the site that is closely related to its environment and to the ecology
surrounding the vicinity.

SITE ANALYSIS
Design Concept and Philosophy
Since Architecture nowadays is evolving and developing, there is a need for
redevelopment in parks/ waterfront parks to meet the modern-day socio-cultural needs

of the people.
DESIGN CONCEPT
The Main Design concept of the waterfront park development projects is to design a
waterfront park that will be Adaptable, Sustainable, Functional and Flexible. The
Redevelopment of the waterfront park will not only inspire and present a celebration of
the Landscape but will highlight the Filipino Modern Architecture as well as showcase
the rich culture of the Filipinos in Davao City.

The waterfront park will also showcase and honour the most-loved and revered
president of the Philippines, Ramon Magsaysay, by retaining its monument in its
present location.
The structures within the park will be situated to avoid destroying existing trees.
Landscape Design in the park will incorporate a bambusetum and a tropical garden
within its site. Also the design shall reintegrate vegetation into the architecture. The
extensive use of Filipino architectural materials like bamboo and wood will also be
accentuated in the park design.
The park will be Sustainable by emphasizing the use of Architectural green solutions
and Architectural landscape conservation. The use of green supplies and materials in
eliminating or minimizing possible sources of toxins, allergens and other harmful
pollutants will be considered to keep the users free from pollutants. Water and Energy
Efficiency solutions will also be implemented like Rainwater harvesting, Solar panels,
etc. and usage of water treatment solutions and waste management facilities.
The waterfront park will be adaptable since the built structures within the park will show
consideration for the environment through building systems and will promote a social
understanding of the balance between human activities and natural ecosystems. The
park will be redesigned with consideration with its present environment.
Flexibility in the waterfront park design is essential. The spaces in the park will not only
serve one permanent function but can also adapt into many functions. It is important to
make the spaces flexible for future alterations and modifications for cultural events and
occasions.

The resulting redesigning of Ramon Magsaysay Waterfront Park will revive the old
landmark and icon of the City. The adjacent Sta. Ana wharf shall also be redeveloped
for commercial docking /marina of private and commercial sea vessels which will attract
more foreign investors and business companies.
