Defects conditioned by the product surface quality or design

Structural defect Possible coating defect

Insufficient bend radius Structural failure along the radius
Minimum bend radii should be:
For sheets:
-R S for materials with thickness S up to 1, 5
mm;
-R 2S for materials with thickness over 1, 5 mm
(where S is sheet thickness)
For pipes:
-for pipes with OD up to 20 mm,
minimum 2,5D
-for pipes with OD over 20 mm, minimum 3,5D
(where D is pipe OD).
Laser, plasma or oxygen cutting Structural changes occur and
solidifications form on the cut
face, which require grinding or
abrasive blasting
Crevices with less than 4 mm distance between Crevice corrosion
planes

Surface defect Possible coating defect

Certain zones with rolled-in scale, slag or other Coating holidays
metallic inclusions, paint

Carbon deposition on steel surface during heat

treatment
Accumulation of non-metallic inclusions on steel Blistering
surface formed during continuous steel casting.
Deseaming defects
Abrupt change of shape, for example, at the edges; Coating with fir-tree structure
significant roughness with frequent change of bulges (beard, broom)
and cavities (shot blasting), plastic deformation (cold Fir-tree structure increases the
hardening) coating adhesion strength, but
impairs its appearance.
Surfaces with very deep roughness, for example, after Thicker coatings than usually.
shot blasting

Weld joint defect Possible coating defect

High stress of weld joint Product deformation, weld joint
cracking
Pores, undercuts, discontinuous joint, socket welding Formation of hollows filled with
acid during pickling (which
cannot be washed away by
rinsing) and /or flux. In the course
of operation condensate appears
in hollows causing corrosion with
rusty runs formation.
Weld slags, splatters, separating agents (sprays) Coating holidays
High silicon content in electrodes, and consequently, Thicker coating on weld joints
in weld joints than on other surface
