I PURPOSE:
This procedure defines the procedure for installing/providing concrete benching for Sewer
manholes (and other similar structures that requires benching) as specified and as shown on the
approved references (Drawings and Details) for Industrial Support Facilities Buildings EPC-06 at
Jizan Economic City.

II SCOPE:
This procedure is applicable within AYC projects at Industrial Support Facilities Building (ISFB)
EPC-06 at Jizan Economic City, Jizan, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

III Definition:
Benching- A half-round channel cast in the concrete in the bottom of a manhole to direct discharge
when the flow is low.

IV RESPONSIBILITES:
a) Site Engineer - shall be responsible for the implementation of this Installation Procedure
under the direct supervision of the Construction Managers.
b) Quality Manager-shall ensure that the approved procedure is being implemented.
c) QC Inspectors shall perform monitoring during installation process.

VI EXECUTION
A. Preparation:
1) Prior to any layout or markings for manhole benching, ensure that the bottom of
manhole is free from any debris, loose concrete and any other form of unsuitable
materials that could affect the proper installation of concrete benching.
2) Layout the inlet and outlet flow with reference to the standard details as shown
on approved drawing.
3) Mark the layout is such a way that it forms a half round or gradual curve to
ensure smooth and un-obstructed flow of sanitary water.
B. Installation:
1) Concrete shall be 2000 PSI / C14 (Lean Concrete) from approved batching plants.
2) Bottom of a manhole shall have concrete benching, which must be channelled
smooth from the invert of all pipes entering the manhole.

3) When there is a difference of more than 50 mm to 600 mm between the inverts

of incoming sewers, a chute shall be created in the benching to provide a smooth
flow.
4) Benching shall not be less than ¾ of the diameter of the sewer pipe.
5) Top of the benching must be sloped towards the open channel at the slope of 4
to 8%.
6) The concrete benching shall be painted with epoxy paint/bituminous paint in
accordance with IFC Drawing No. VA-932753-001 Rev.00 (Notes)

VIII HEALTH, SAFETY and ENVIRONMENT:

 Health, Safety and Environment issues shall be guided by AYC safety procedures and ARAMCO
Standard.
 Work area to be kept clean, safe and easily accessible
 Appropriate PPE shall be worn at all times
 Safety talk shall be conducted to remind the workers about the risk involved before commencing
the activity
 Work permits shall be secured prior to work execution.
