CONCRETE CHIPPING and RESTORATION AFTER MEP INSTALLATIONS

PURPOSE:
This Method Statement defines the procedures and practices that will be used for Chipping
activities due to Mechanical/Electrical/Plumbing After-Casting Installations.
LIMITATIONS:
This statement should be applicable for the duration of the ISFB EPC-06 project as per the
current base-line schedule or any approved revisions to the schedule.

PROPOSED MATERIAL:
SIKA GROUT 114 - For repairs with 75mm maximum thickness
BASF MasterFlow 950 – For repairs with required thickness ranging from 20mm thickness
and to a maximum depth of 100mm.
SIKACRETE 114 - For large concrete restoration requiring formwork, SIKACRETE 114 shall
be used as per product description and uses

POSSIBLE REASONS FOR CHIPPING:

 MECHANICAL/ELECTRICAL/PLUMBING (MEP) lines installation details came after the
casting of the structure.
 MECHANICAL/ELECTRICAL/PLUMBING (MEP) lines elevations may not properly
emphasize during roughing-ins stage
 MECHANICAL/ELECTRICAL/PLUMBING (MEP) lines Layout Revisions

RESPONSIBILITIES:
 Construction Team - MS Preparation and Implementation
 Review - QC Department and HSE

TOOLS/EQUIPMENT:
 Light Chipping or Hand Held Chipping Hammer tools shall be used

CONCRETE CHIPPING and RESTORATION AFTER MEP INSTALLATIONS

EXECUTION:
I. Concrete Chipping
a) Determine the structure that would be affected on the chipping activity and do
proper and advance information to Aramco representatives (SAPMT / JAPID).
b) With reference to the approved shop drawing, outlined the portion of concrete to be
chipped off by saw cutting or grinding at both sides should chipping has to go
through the concrete. Saw cutting shall be done with a depth within 13mm to 19mm
(1/2” to ¾”) deep.
c) Perform chipping only after the concrete has completed its 7 days water curing and
has reached 70% of the required strength.
d) Chipping operations shall be done with small mechanical or electronic tools that
could not produce extreme vibrations on the structure. Use of pneumatic jack
hammers shall be avoided.
e) On situations where cutting of reinforcing bars are unavoidable, operations will only
proceed after concurrence from the Aramco representative (SAPMT/JAPID).
f) On cut off reinforcing bars, coating touch up at cut ends shall be done.

II. Concrete Restoration-Grouting (After MEP Installations)

a) Concrete surface should be clean, sound and free from oil, grease, cement laitance
and all loosely adhering particles.
b) Metal surfaces (iron and steel) should be free from scale, rust, oil and grease
c) Wet the cleaned area prior to applying non-shrink grout. Absorbent surfaces should
be saturated.
d) For large concrete restoration, formwork shall be provided and installed with
reference to SAIC-Q-1048 and Product Data Sheet.
e) Grouting application shall comply with Aramco Specification and Product Instruction.

MATERIAL HANDLING/STORING:
a) Handling and storing shall be as per recommendation by the SIKA GROUT 114,
SIKACRETE 114, and BASF Master Flow 950
Product instructions.

HEALTH, SAFETY and ENVIRONMENT:

a) Health, Safety and Environment issues shall be guided by AYC safety procedures
ARAMCO Standard.
b) Work area to be kept clean, safe and easily accessible
c) Appropriate PPE shall be worn at all times
d) Safety talk shall be conducted to remind the workers about the risk involved before
commencing the activity
