1. REFERENCE WORKS BIG TIME. But to refer u, u shud know a snr who s wrkin in an office
wic s gonna hire few ppl…

2. Without referenc also u can get great jobs… depends on how extensive u srch… (and
also how persistent u r)

3. Min wage is $8. Generally basic office assistant posts, café jobs wil range between 8 to
9.5

4. Café jobs: here u hav few hot spots lik Trojan grounds, everybody’s kitchen (EVK),
café 84, etc where u can find a few on-campus jobs. But des place needs nly abt 2-3
workers and whenever 1 worker leaves he wil refer anodr prsn for his place. So getting
in normally here s tuf. (not impossibl). I kno a guy who s wrkin in EVK. He didn get in
thro referenc. Everyday at 6am he usd to go to the place and the lady manager usd to
tel him ‘no vacancy’ and on 4th day she gave him the job cos of his persistence.

5. Der used to be a huge cafeteria place called LOT. Now its closed and moved to a new
building Ronald Tutor Campus Center. (not Ronald Tutor Hall, commonly called RTH)
in lot der wer a few opportunities but I hav no idea abt the new place but defnly a
new building wil generate more jobs and also more new shops have come up.

6. Theres a café/bar called LAB, jus outsid the campus, right across the street only.
There also u can try for jobs.

7. Gud thing in des café is dat ur pay wil be 9 or so nly but everyday u wil get free food
coupons wic u can use der for ur food.. so u can literally remov the cookin worries to
an extent.

8. Office assistant jobs- genrly for front desk jobs they prefer girls => these jobs are
fairly easy for girls to get into. Work will be like attendin fone calls, mayb emails,
workin wit printers/scanners, filing, etc… genrly pay wil be around 8-9. Des jobs wil
genrly come up in ConnectSC.

9. High-end office asst jobs – these are jobs wil wil again be similar to the prev one but
wit som xtra duties and mostly the extra duties wil be lil bit technical. Hence u wil get
paid from 10-15 or evn more…(depends on the dept u work, etc)

10. Web developer posts are genrly more and dey pay u ranging from 11 to evn 18!
(getting 11 might be an easy) –again connectSC only.

11. Some more technical jobs will be der for CS ppl in terms of coding, multimedia, etc…
chk out IMSC where many animation stuffs are gng on.very high paying jobs. Approach
Prof direcly if u think u can do somtn gud in any of deir proj.
12. The main job providing offices: ITS, FMS, 3434 Grand library, all libraries

13. I had posted links for ITS, libraries online jobs srch portals. But for ITS its always
reference. U wont evn hav a avacancay posting der but if u hav referenc u wil get into
it. They hav jobs of all pay scale! 8 to 20!

14. Der are many offices lik usc stevens, photocopying rom, wic need many workers but
they wil post in connects wen dey hav an opening.

15. WORK STUDY: if a job is mentioned as work-study then its availabl only for
Americans. Genrly wen u apply the employer wont evn reply or wil send a 1 liner dat
its for work-study. Some of the work-study jobs are also specific abt the dept u study
cos dey wil need ppl from finance, biomed, etc… Rarely if these jobs are jus lik normal
jobs and stil its work study den u can (if you want to) try applying to them. If the
employer is fine paying you den he might call u for an interview.

In case of work study the pay will be high. If u r paid $8, the univ s payin it to u. if a
work study stud is paid $8 then the univ wil pay only a part of it wile the rest come
from the govt. so work study jobs wil be genrly >10 atleast…

16. Make a 1 page resume and cover letter. Sometimes u may need to modify it a little
based on the job u r applyin for (increase/decreas the technical/administratv content)

17. Theres a bookstore here wic is invariably the startin place for evry1 to start their job
srch… they also hire a lot of ppl evry sem… (though at times dey wil giv vry less hrs
nly)

18. Theres a SCallers office in the univ village wic s a calling office. They wil cal alumni
ppl for somc crap work (who cares what?)
they always hire ppl evry sem. U hav 2 go der n fill out a form. Den dey wil call u in a
week. Spk as fluent and as good and as Americanized as possibl ovr fone and u wil get
dat job. (note dat dis job s nly in evenings)

19. Wen I came here on dec 15 2009, I did not find much openings for jobs here. I srchd
almost evry other building here and feb 25th I got a vry gud job. But right now I can see
almost evry1 s getting a job wen dey are tryin for it. So I hope u ppl wont hav to
struggle as much as we did.

20. Reg libraries, wen u apply in dat site u can find som alphabets like LVL201, etc… des
are ntn but room numbers of the officer who has psotd the opening. If u want u can
apply onlin n aftr 2 days go n meet this officer (repeatedly doin dis can either irritate
the officer or get u a job. I have seen both cases here!)

21. IMPORTANT:
Ppl wit gud CS background in scripting lik python, php and all can go thro the ISI site
and see wat projs are gng on. If ders any openin u can apply for dem or u can direcly
email the top guys in dos places sayin u r lukin for a job n u kno all des stuffs… (this is
 a big thing wic not many do. U CAN email direcly the tp guys, big profs of ISI and
administrative officers of any odr offices direcly and get a job. I kno ppl who did dat
too. He direcly applied to som top guys of 1 offic by getting their info from websites
and incidently dey wntd a web developer and so he got into it!)

22. ABOUT ISI JOBS:

if u wrk in ISI u get paid heavily and the place u wrk wil be awesome! (beyond
description)
if u work vry well (u wil be wrkin on a technical proj under som resrch prof) and if the
prof s impressd u can get a chanc to do phd under dat prof!
if u work well and dey r impressd n u don wnt to do phd, den dey mite offer u ful-time
job.. pay is higher than Microsoft and Google!
EE guys: evn we will hav som jobs der but vry few ppl nly needed and so der nvr occurs
a EE vacancy!
