SQUARE ARCHITECTURE

he architecture of Singapore’s
prestigious Parkview Square
was inspired by the glamourous
Art Deco skyscrapers of Europe
and New York, along with London’s Battersea
Power Station.
Those same influences carried over to the
building’s dramatic lobby bar, which was in
need of a contemporary update that would
also make its original design sing.
Layers of old and new create an elegant,
world class space
Instead of a complete overhaul, we worked
with our client on a gentler, more evolution-
ary approach to the refurbishment, adhering
to the vision of the property’s developer, CS
Hwang, and faithfully restoring the original
design by James Adams Design.

We approached it as both an intervention
and conservation project with contemporary
enhancements, seeking to turn ATLAS into
one of the world’s most memorable drinking
and dining venues.
We respected the richly detailed and elabo-
rate space – reminiscent of 1920s New York
– with a layered design that references the
geometry, gilded brass work and frescos
throughout the development.
We turned the venue’s signature, three sto-
rey liquor cabinet into the dramatic new
home for the world’s largest gin collection.
We added an elegant new platform for bar-
tenders to access spirits, a champagne room
and over scaled bars.
A warm and welcoming arrival for guests.
To create a sense of arrival, we simplified the
entrance point and introduced a ‘statement’
desk with a dramatic gold stainless steel
screen that frames the entry and creates a
sense of warmth.
ATLAS offers an all day dining experience,
so we needed to ensure our design worked
from morning until night.
We changed the bar’s spatial planning to
create intimate seating zones and allow for
a wide range of configurations without com-
promising the daily experience for guests.
This also increased seating capacity, maxi-
mised floor space and improved circulation.

All the furniture in the refurbishment was
custom designed to balance conrary with
decorative period touches, and the colour
palette and materials were inspired by the
original design scheme.

The form of the furniture was kept simple

but expansive to complement the bar’s vast
space and intricate, gilded interiors.

All these design touches – large and small

– have transformed ATLAS into one of
Singapore’s most breathtaking spaces and
a global drawcard for cocktail and wine con-
noisseurs, and novices alike.

B orobudur Temple is known
as one of the Wonders of
the World (largest Buddhist
Monument in the World), this was found-
ed in the VIII century AD during the period
Cailendra Dynasty.
The Sailendra dynasty built this Largest
Buddhist monument in the world between
AD 780 and 840. The Sailendra are the rul-
ing dynasty in Central Java at the time.
It was built as a place for glorifying Buddha
and a pilgrimage spot to guide mankind
from worldly desires into enlightenment
and wisdom according to Buddha.
This monument was discovered by the
British in 1814 under Sir Thomas Stanford
Raffles, it was until 1835 that the entire
area of the temple has been cleared.

with four entry point and a circular center
point.
Working from the exterior to the interior,
three zones of consciousness are repre-
sented, with the central sphere represent-
ing unconsciousness or Nirvana.
Zone 1: Kamadhatu
The phenomenal world, the world inhab-
ited by common people.
Borobudur’s hidden Kamadhatu level con-
sists of 160 reliefs depicting scenes of
Karmawibhangga Sutra, the law of cause
and effect.
Illustrating the human behavior of desire,
the reliefs depict robbing, killing, rape,
torture and defamation.
A corner of the covering base has been
permanently removed to allow visitors
to see the hidden foot, and some of the
reliefs.
Photography of the entire collection of
160 reliefs is displayed at the Borobudur
Museum which is within the Borobudur
Archaeological Park.
Zone 2: Rapudhatu
The transitional sphere, humans are
released from worldly matters.
The four square levels of Rapadhatu con-
tain galleries of carved stone reliefs, as
well as a chain of niches containing stat-
ues of Buddha.
In total there are 328 Buddha on these
balustrade levels which also have a great
deal of purely ornate reliefs.
The Sanskrit manuscripts that are depict-
ed on this level over 1 300 reliefs are
Gandhawyuha, Lalitawistara, Jataka and
Awadana.

They stretch for 2.5km. In addition there

are 1 212 decorative panels.

Zone 3: Arupadhatu

The highest sphere, the abode of the gods.

The three circular terraces leading to a

central dome or stupa represent the rising
above the world, and these terraces are a
great deal less ornate, the purity of form is
paramount.

The terraces contain circles of perforated

stupas, an inverted bell shape, containing
sculptures of Buddha, who face outward
from the temple. There are 72 of these
stupas in total.

The impressive central stupa is currently

not as high as the original version, which
rose 42m above ground level, the base is
9.9m in diameter.

Unlike the stupas surrounding it, the cen-

tral stupa is empty and conflicting reports
suggest that the central void contained
relics, and other reports suggest it has
always been empty.

The Reliefs

The total of 504 Buddha are in meditative

pose, and the 6 different hand positions
represented throughout the temple, often
according to the direction the Buddha
faces.

For those who loves adventure, Kali Suci which is located at Gunungkidul which

Cave is about 60km from the city of Yogya

The name Kalisuci simply translated

means ‘Holy River’ which originates from
the spring found in the area that produces
an endless flow of crystal clear water even
in the rainy season. However, during the
rainy season cave tubing here is prohib-
ited for safety of the public since the caves
may suddenly flood.

Cave tubing at Kalisuci is managed
and organized by the local community
through the village Tourism Awareness
Association (Pokdarwis). The organization
has about 20 guides, the young men and
women of the village who will accompany
you through the entire journey and ensure
your safety during this adventure trip.
Kalisuci cave tubing adventure covers a
total distance of about 500 meters taking
an approximate time of 1.5 to 2 hours.
Here, the stream will take you through a
number of cave that are interconnected
called the Suci Cave, the Luweng Senglat
Cave, Luweng Geleng Cave, and Mburi
Omah Cave.

The river’s depth is between 1 to 3 meters,
and you will be floating along with the cur-
rent during the entire journey.
