Introduction Overview

1. Introduction
1.1 Overview
The LVDT Position Module (LPS01) provides an interface through which a Bridge Controller (BRC) can read the position of
two linear variable differential transformers (LVDTs) or rotary variable differential transformers (RVDTs). For simplicity, this
document refers only to LVDTs as the procedures are the same for RVDTs.

The module consists of a main circuit board, a Front Panel Display circuit board, and a plastic faceplate. The Front Panel
Display contains a four digit display, LED lamps, and push buttons. The module occupies a single slot in the Modular
Mounting Unit (MMU).

The following figure (Figure 1-1) shows an example of a LPS01 application:

Figure 1-1: LPS01 Application Example

When calibrating the LPS01, a digital input is used to inform the BRC that the calibration is taking place; so that the logic
dependent on the LVDT position does not misinterpret the position information.

Functional Description Operation

2. Functional Description
2.1 Operation
The LPS01 module has three operating modes:
• Normal: Reads LVDT position and sends it to the Bridge Controller (BRC). Calibration values are locked in this
mode and cannot be altered.
• Manual Calibration: A technician uses an oscilloscope to adjust the module using the Front Panel Display push
buttons.
• Automatic Calibration: The valve is moved by the operator to opposite extremes. The microprocessor
automatically adjusts the summer amplifier gain and phase shift to the optimum values

2.2 Block Diagram

The following figure (Figure 2-1) shows the module block diagram:

Figure 2-1:LPS01 Block Diagram

The Expander Bus Interface block enables communication between the BRC and the LPS01. This communication channel
is an eight bit parallel data bus with two control lines. An integrated circuit performs the communications protocol for
interfacing the data and status information to the BRC. It performs address compare, R/W strobe generation, and contains
bus drivers and receivers. The user selects the module expander bus address by setting a dipswitch on the LPS01. The
address byte precedes every data transfer. The module expander bus integrated circuit does an address comparison before
allowing data to transfer on the module expander bus. If the addresses match, then BRC can strobe data to or from the
module expander bus. The position and status buffers hold status information and process data traveling between the BRC
and the module expander bus I/O. This allows the two asynchronous busses to operate together and exchange information
using handshake signals.

The Microprocessor block initializes the entire module on power up. It computes the LVDT positions and sequences the
Multiplexer in coordination with the Expander Bus Interface buffers. The Microprocessor also is used to compute the
optimum gain and phase shift during automatic calibration.

The Waveform Generator uses a 1.85 KHz oscillator to generate a square wave for the microprocessor and a sine wave for
the LVDT primary excitation voltage. Each primary excitation voltage circuit has an individual amplifier whose gain is
adjustable using one of the three jumpers.

The primary winding of the LVDT induces a voltage in each of two secondary windings:

2VAA002489 2-1
Block Diagram Functional Description

• Secondary #1 which is in phase with the primary.

• Secondary #2 which is 180 out of phase with the primary.
The magnitude of the voltages induced in the secondaries depends on the position of the core which is attached to the
valve by a connecting rod. The Summing Amplifier block sums the two secondary waveforms to obtain a summed waveform
which varies in phase and amplitude based on the relative magnitude of the two secondary inputs. The summed waveform
is amplified and sent to the Multiplexer. The gain of the summer can be adjusted from the Front Panel Display as part of the
manual or automatic calibration procedures. The amplified summed waveforms for each channel can be monitored at TP2
and TP3 for Channels A and B respectively.

When the LVDT core is in the ‘null’ position, the two secondary outputs are equal in amplitude because the two signals are
180* out of phase and the amplitude of the summed waveform is zero. With the valve at the 100% position, the amplitude of
Secondary #1 is maximum while the amplitude of Secondary #2 is minimum. Thus, the summed waveform is at a maximum
value and is in phase with the primary. With the valve at the 0% position, the amplitude of Secondary #1 is at a minimum
value while the amplitude of Secondary #2 is maximum. Thus, the summed waveform is again at a maximum value but now
is 180 out of phase with the primary. If the null position of the LVDT core is at the mid-point of the valve travel, then the
amplitudes of the 100% and 0% summed waveforms are the same but is180 out of phase. If the null position is other than
the exact mid-point position of the valve, then the amplitude of the summed waveform at one end of the valve travel is
greater than at the other end (but is still 180 out of phase).
NOTE: LVDT linearity is best near the null position. Using a range which is equally above and below the null position
maximizes the use of the linear range of the LVDT. In some applications where linearity is not critical, the null position is
set with the valve at the 0% or 100% position rather than at the mid-point position. In this situation, the summed wave-
form is always the same phase relative to the primary signal. The magnitude of the waveform is a direct indication of the
position of the valve. The disadvantage of this application is that only 1/2 of the travel of the LVDT is used. This requires
a longer LVDT and typically is less accurate due to nonlinearities in the LVDT.

When the square wave from the Waveform Generator goes from low to high (a ‘positive edge’ on the waveform), the phase
shift timer is triggered. The phase shift timer is set to approximately one-quarter the period of the primary excitation
frequency, so that when the phase shift timer expires the summed waveform is at a peak value.

The microprocessor generates an oscilloscope trigger source for use during manual calibration that toggles with each
expiration of the phase shift timer. Channel A is sampled on the negative edge of the oscilloscope trigger and Channel B is
sampled on the positive edge of the oscilloscope trigger.

The following figure (Figure 2-2) shows the relationship between the various waveforms in the LPS01. The magnitude and
phase relationship of the secondary waveforms varies based on the position of the valve relative to the LVDT null.

2-2 2VAA002489
Functional Description Front Panel Display

Figure 2-2: LPS01 Timing

When the phase shift timer expires, the ‘sample and hold’ circuit captures the instantaneous analog value of the summed
waveform. This value is either positive or negative based on whether the waveform is in or out of phase with the primary.
The analog to digital converter transforms the analog value to a digital one, which is used to compute the position of the
LVDT based on the calibration data. The results are stored in the Expander Bus Interface position buffer. The Multiplexer
(MUX) is then switched to the other channel and the process is repeated.

2.3 Front Panel Display

The following figure (Figure 2-3) shows the module front panel display:

2VAA002489 2-3
Front Panel Display Functional Description

Figure 2-3: Module Front Panel Display

The green Health LED is lit when the module detects the module expander bus clock signal. The red CAL LED is lit when
the module is in either of the calibration modes.

The four digit display indicates the position of the selected channel in the Normal mode or calibration information in either of
the calibration modes. The red A and B LED's indicate which channel is displayed or calibrated.

When the module is in the Normal mode, the A/0 and B/100 push buttons select which channel to display on the four digit
display. When the module is in the Calibration mode, the push buttons are used to select the channel to be calibrated. The
Manual Calibration mode uses the push buttons to modify the gain and phase shift timer parameters.

The LPS01 module uses a standard NTDI01 Digital I/O Termination Unit for field I/O connections. Configure dipshunts XU1
through XU3 and XU13 through XU15 on the NTDI01 according to Figure 4-1. The solid lines between corresponding pins
represent shorted connections. Cut or punch all of the other pin straps on the dipshunt such that they form an open
connection. Sockets not labeled do not have a dipshunt installed.

Figure 4-1: Termination Unit Configuration

4.2 Symphony Plus Configuration

The module communicates with a BRC using Symphony Plus Function Code 114 (BCDIN) to retrieve the position of the
required channel (Figure 4-2). A separate function code is required for each channel. The module address established by
dipswitch S1 is used for Channel A. The module address used for Channel B is dipswitch S1 +1. Refer to the
Symphony Plus Function Code Application Manual for detailed instructions on the configuration and use of function codes

Calibration Manual Calibration

5. Calibration
There are two ways to calibrate the LPS01 module:
• Manual Calibration
• Automatic Calibration

5.1 Manual Calibration

Manual Calibration adjusts the summer amplifier gain and the phase shift timer setting using the Front Panel Display.
Manual Calibration is required for the first time when the module is powered up after manufacture (‘virgin’ power-up). A dual
channel oscilloscope is used to monitor both the output of the summing amplifier for the channel being calibrated and the
oscilloscope trigger generated by the Microprocessor.

After the initial calibration, Automatic Calibration is the normal method used for calibration. ABB tests 100% of all LPS01
modules prior to shipment which includes a Manual Calibration. Manual Calibration is not normally required nor
recommended to be performed by the customer.

For certain situations, when it is necessary for manual calibration to be performed in the field, refer to section
5.1.1- Procedure of this user manual for details on how to perform a Manual Calibration.

5.1.1 Procedure
NOTE: Throughout this step-by-step procedure the required valve position is referred to as either 0% or 100%. Whether
these positions correspond to fully OPEN or fully CLOSED depends on the application and must be determined by the
user.
For Example: If full OPEN is considered to be the 100% position, then move the valve to the full OPEN position
whenever the procedure calls for the 100% position.

Follow the given steps to manually calibrate the module:

1. Remove the module from the MMU.
2. Set dipswitch S1 switches 1 and 2 to enable the Manual Calibration mode as follows:

Switch 1..... 1/OFF/OPEN

Switch 2......0/ON/CLOSED
3. Check the jumper settings on the module (refer to Table 3-3).
4. Install jumpers J5 and J8, if the parameters required for the LVDT are unknown.

Once you install jumpers J5 and J8, it provides 20 Vp-p primary excitation voltage which works with many LVDT
models in the market.
5. Insert the module back into the MMU.

NOTE: Mount the module on a module extender card to access the test points with the oscilloscope probes
without accidentally shorting the probe to other modules or the MMU.

6. Connect one channel of the oscilloscope to the test point for the channel being calibrated (TP2 - Channel A,
TP3 - Channel B).
7. Trigger the oscilloscope using the signal at TP1.

Procedure Calibration

8. Display the oscilloscope trigger signal using the second oscilloscope channel. (Refer to Figure 5-1 for the
locations of TP1, TP2 and TP3)

Figure 5-1: LPS01 Test Point Locations

9. Move the valve to the 100% position.

10. Press the Front Panel Display CAL push button to enter into the Manual Calibration mode.

Once you press the Front Panel Display CAL push button, the CAL LED illuminates, indicating that the module is
in calibration mode and both the channel indicator LEDs are extinguished.
11. Press the A/0 push button or the B/100 push button for Channel A or B, whichever is applicable; to select the
appropriate channel to calibrate.

Once you press either the A/0 push button or the B/100 push button, the appropriate A or B LED illuminates to
indicate which channel is being calibrated and the display shows the current summer amplifier gain.
12. Press the A/0 button to lower it or the B/100 button to raise it to adjust the gain.

NOTE: The ideal waveform is 20 Vp-p. Ensure the waveform does not exceed 10 Vpeak in either the positive or
negative portion of the waveform. If a proper waveform cannot be obtained, then it is necessary to change the
jumper settings for the primary excitation voltage or adjust the LVDT null.

13. Move the valve to the 0% position.

NOTE: If the waveform does not exceed 10 Vpeak in either the positive or negative portion of the waveform
and is at least 10 Vp-p, then further adjustment is not required

14. Perform either of the following, as applicable, if the 0% waveform is not within the required range:
a. Reduce the gain until the waveform is less than 10 Vpeak in both the positive or negative portion of the
waveform, if the 0% waveform exceeds 10 Vpeak in either the positive or negative portion of the waveform.
b. Move the valve back to the 100% position and check the waveform.

NOTE: If the 100% waveform is still at least 10 Vp-p, then further adjustment is not required.

OR

c. Increase the gain until the waveform is at least 10 Vp-p, if the 0% waveform is less than 10 Vp-p.
d. Move the valve back to the 100% position and check the waveform.

NOTE: If the 100% waveform does not exceed 10 Vpeak in either the positive or negative portion of the
waveform, then further adjustment is not required.

Based on the null adjustment, the magnitude of one of the positions (0% or 100%) can be greater than the
other. The largest waveform must not exceed 10 Vpeak in either the positive or negative portion of the
waveform. The smaller waveform must be at least 10 Vp-p. If it is not possible to obtain these values, then it
is necessary to change the jumper settings for the primary excitation voltage or the null must be adjusted
per the LVDT manufacturer's instructions.
15. Press the CAL push button when the gain is properly set.

Once you press the CAL push button, the display indicates the current phase shift timer value in microseconds.

5-2 2VAA002489
Calibration Automatic Calibration

16. Adjust the phase shift timer value until the summer amplifier peak output is aligned with the phase shift timer
expiration with the valve in its 100% position.

Figure 2-2 shows the ideal phase alignment. The A/0 push button decreases the phase shift timer value and the
B/100 push button increases the phase shift timer value.
17. Press the CAL push button when the phase shift timer value is correct.
18. Press the B/100 push button when the valve is still at the 100% position.
19. Move the valve to the 0% position and press the A/0 push button.

Once you press the B/100 push button, the CAL LED gets extinguished, which indicates that the manual
calibration procedure is now complete.
20. Remove the module from the MMU.
21. Set the module to the Normal mode by setting dipswitch S1 switches 1 and 2 as follows:

Switch 1..........0/ON CLOSED

Switch 2..........1/OFF OPEN
22. Re-insert the module in the MMU.

5.2 Automatic Calibration

Automatic calibration allows the microprocessor to automatically determine the optimum summer amplifier gain and phase
shift timer setting. It is the normal and recommended method used to calibrate the module.

During the Automatic Calibration the operator calibrates channel A or B of the LPS01 by using the Front Panel Display push
buttons and moving the valve to the 100% position and to the 0% position. The actual position of the valve in these
positions (full OPEN or full CLOSED) is dependent on the application.

Refer to section 5.2.1- Procedure of this user manual for details on how to perform an Automatic Calibration.

5.2.1 Procedure
NOTE: Throughout this step-by-step procedure the required valve position is referred to as either 0% or 100%. Whether
these positions correspond to fully OPEN or fully CLOSED depends on the application and must be determined by the
user.

For Example: If full OPEN is considered to be the 100% position, then move the valve to the full OPEN position whenever
the procedure calls for the 100% position.

Follow the given steps to automatically calibrate the module:

1. Remove the module from the MMU.
2. Set dipswitch S1 switches 1 and 2 to enable the Automatic Calibration mode, as follows:

Switch 1............1/OFF/OPEN
Switch 2............1/OFF/OPEN
3. Check the jumper settings on the module.
4. Install jumpers J5 and J8, if the parameters required for the LVDT are unknown.

Once you install jumpers J5 and J8, it provides 20 Vp-p primary excitation voltage which works with the majority
of LVDTs in the market.
5. Insert the module back into the MMU.
6. Move the valve to the 0% position.
7. Press the Front Panel Display CAL push button to enter the module in the calibration mode.

Once you press the Front Panel Display CAL push button, the CAL LED illuminates, indicating that the module is
in calibration mode and both the channel LEDs are extinguished.
8. Press the A/0 push button or the B/100 push button for Channel A or B, whichever is applicable; to select the
appropriate channel to calibrate.

Once you press either the A/0 push button or the B/100 push button, the appropriate A or B LED illuminates to
indicate which channel is being calibrated.

Procedure Calibration

9. Press the A/0 push button.

Once you press the A/0 push button, the Front Panel Display appears blank and then indicates ‘0000’ when this
phase of the calibration is completed.
10. Move the valve to the 100% position.
11. Press the B/100 push button.

Once you press the B/100 push button, the Front Panel Display changes to ‘0100’ when this phase of the
calibration is completed.
12. Press the B/100 push button again.

Once you press the B/100 push button, the LPS01 module completes the valve calibration for the 100% position.
13. Position the valve to the 0% position and press the A/0 push button.

Once you press the A/0 push button, the LPS01 module completes the valve calibration for the 0% position.

Calibration of the channel is now complete. The LPS01 module extinguishes the CAL LED and the four digit
display shows the current position of the channel that is just calibrated.
14. Repeat Step 6 to Step 13 for the other channel, if required.
15. Remove the module from the MMU.
16. Set the module to the Normal mode by setting dipswitch S1 switches 1 and 2 as follows:

Switch 1..........0/ON CLOSED

Switch 2..........1/OFF OPEN
17. Re-insert the module in the MMU.
