The test specimen consisting of two half is interconnected at bottom by the bar whose
bond is to be investigated and at top by a steel hinge, is loaded by two forces of equal
magnitude on top which are placed symmetrically with regards to mid-span section of the
beam. Thus a more realistic stress distribution inside and around rebar is created.
During loading, which should be continued till complete bond failure in each of two
half- beams, the slip of two ends should be measured. Thus each test supplies two results, i.e.
two curves representing the slip of the bar as a function of the load applied to the beam.

Mechanism
This way when the specimen is loaded, the bending moment at the centre of the beam
is taken care of by the steel hinge (in compression) and the deformed bar (in tension) only.
Therefore in the section analysis, the effect of concrete is eliminated which in turn reduces
the complexity of dealing with concrete compression block. Another purpose of the steel
hinge is to provide adequate rotation of the blocks during loading, which is necessary to
obtain pure bond failure.
In addition to the main reinforcing steel in which the bond is assessed, there exists
other reinforcement (auxiliary steel) in each half of the beam as shown in Fig. This extra
reinforcement is required to take care of the shear and bending forces as well as to represent
the effect of confinement provided by transverse reinforcement (which does exist in real
structural members) on the bond performance.

Instrumentation
The slip of the bar, at its free end, was recorded using 3 linear variable differential
transducers (LVDT) on both ends of the specimen. These LVDT’s were secured to the bar by
means of a steel collar.

Colour Description
__________ LVDT (B)

___ Strain Gauge

(A)
__________ Plastic tube

___________ Rebar

___________ Sleeve

Along with above mentioned LVDT at both end to measure slip, a strain gauge is
provided on rebar in middle portion of test specimen to know strain at particular loading
condition
Along with above mentioned LVDT and Strain gauges, two set of 3 strain gauges will
be applied to check strain compatibility between rebar, sleeve and concrete.

Notes for Construction

 The prescribed bond length is 10 times the bar diameter, this leads to yielding, and in
some cases even rupture, of the reinforcement bar before reaching the ultimate bond
strength. Therefore most of the specimens were cast with a bond length of 5 times the
bar diameter.
This was achieved by putting plastic tubes over the remaining parts of the bar.

 This hinge was secured to the beam 14 days before testing by using a traditional
mortar. ?

 Placing a wooden block in the hinge location and bolting two boards to either side of
the beam restrained the two halves from moving relative to each other?

After Casting
For 28 day test
 Demoulding should be done after hardening period of 3 days as per RILEM Standard.

 Demoulded specimen should be stored for 25 days in air-conditioned surrounding at a

temperature of 20 ± 2 oC & relative humidity of 60 ± 5 %

For 7 day test

 Demoulding should be done after hardening period of 18Hrs as per followed by
Teemage std. procedure.

 Demoulded specimen should be stored for 6 days in air-conditioned surrounding at a

temperature of 20 ± 2 oC & relative humidity of 60 ± 5 %
For 3 day test

 Demoulding should be done after hardening period of 18hrs days as per per followed
by Teemage std. procedure.

 Demoulded specimen should be stored for 2 days in air-conditioned surrounding at a

temperature of 20 ± 2 oC & relative humidity of 60 ± 5 %

 After moulds have been filled, they should be covered with a sheet of plastic
or wet cloth to prevent evaporation of water and should be kept covered until
removal of specimen from mould.

 The beams were transported from the curing location to the testing machine
using an overhead crane and lifting system designed to avoid relative
movement between the two halves of the beams.
Testing Procedure
Loading
RILEM states that “Loading should be applied in consecutive increments corresponding to
stress σs in the bar equal to 80,160,240,320,400,480 N/mm2”.
For Case 1) Total Load = 10.66 KN/ Increment
For Case 2) Total Load = 9.20 KN/Increment
Reference REFERANCES\IMG_20171221_161317.jpg
REFERANCES\IMG_20171221_161321.jpg

Increasing load from Fn to Fn+1 should be achieved in 30 Seconds. At each increment the load
should be kept constant for 120 seconds.
The amount slip should be measured at start and end of each increment stage by means of
dial gauge (least count 1/100mm).
Test should be continued until complete bond failure of bar occurs in both half of beams or
until the bar itself fails.
Loading continued until the slip at one end of the specimen reached 3 mm. For the half-beam
with 3 mm slip the bar was fixed in a clamping device so that the test could be continued
without further slip on this side of the specimen. Loading continued until the slip at the
second half of the specimen exceeded 3 mm as well.

Characteristic value τm is defined from the average bond stresses at a slip 0.01mm , 0.1mm,
1mm.
