Research Topic / Area of Study Veterinary Medicine

Connection to research paper I wrote my paper on Veterinary Medicine, and my mentor

practices general medicine while specializing in
Theriogenology. Theriogenology (the branch of veterinary
medicine concerned with reproduction, including the physiology
and pathology of male and female reproductive systems of
animals and the clinical practice of veterinary obstetrics,
gynecology, and andrology.)

Goal of product / what problem or Currently there isn’t a kit available to veterinary patients,
need solved or addressed expecting puppies so I decided to create a “Puppy Neonatal
(Whelping) Kit,” resolving births at home. This kit will include
everything a family would need to have puppies at home,
helping families that are new to this.

Estimated time to complete My project will take about a month to complete so I learn about
the different aspects of the c-section as well as making the
pamphlet and assembling the kit.

People who will assist (if applicable) Katie Taylor (Vet Tech)
John Spencer (Vet Tech)
Dr. Barber DVM

Estimated cost / investment $0

What will judges see at During the presentation the judges will hopefully see a video of
presentation? (evidence of work a first hand c-section. The c-section will be compared to an
and development) at-home birth. I will present the neonatal kit, explain, and
demonstrate what everything is used for. The judges will see the
kit that I put together based on materials needed to deliver
puppies at home. The video will show what happens if you go to
a specialist to have a c-section versus what would be seen at
home. Also I would compare the costs of having an at home
birth with all the supplies that are required and the cost of having
a c-section. I will include a pamphlet with what materials are
needed, and what they’re used for if the family wanted to do the
delivery at home.
Personal stretch (area of growth) I am learning more about theriogenology and the different stages
of a pregnancy. I am also learning what happens at a home birth
versus a c-section. Also why some dogs have to have a
c-section, and don’t have the option for a natural at home birth.
I’ll learn more on how a c-section works, and the most critical
stages of the puppies first few breaths. With the c-section, I will
also learn the different aspects of caring for the mother. When
comparing the at home birth to the c-section, I am getting
familiar with the business side, and the costs for both ways.
