Thanks to God for helping me and give me chance to finish this assighment timely. And I would

give much knowledge about how to practice English well.

This assighment is the one of English task that composed of Practical English Usage English As
Second Language I realized this assighment is not perfect. But I hope it can be useful for us.
Critics and suggestion is needed here to make this assighment be better.

RECOUNT TEXT

G. Definition Of Recount text


Recount is a text which retells events or experiences in the past. Its purpose is
either to inform or to entertain the audience. There is no complication among the
participants and that differentiates from narrative. A recount text has an
orientation, a series of events in chronological order, personal remarks on the
events, and a reorientation that “rounds off” the sequence of events.

H. Communicative purpose/ Social Function


To record or provide factual information or give someone an account of event
happened In the past.

I. Generic structure / text organization (systematics of writing):


1. Orientation: Introduction to the characters, time and place of occurrence.
2. Events: The events, recounted in chronological order (sequence).
3. Re-orientation; the conclusion of all events, can also contain comments or
impression that the author recounted the experience.

J. Language features (the main linguistic features):


1. Past tense, for example We WENT to the zoo; She was happy, and so on.

PANGANDARAN BEACH

The tour to Pangandaran Beach started on holiday last semester. We decided to


go to Pangandaran Beach by our motorbike. That was very interesting tour. Riding a
motorbike from my hometown, Cirebon, to Pangandaran Beach with my best friends made
me feel exited.
The tour to Pangandaran Beach began at 09.00 a.m. in the morning and it took 5
hours riding to Pangandaran Beach. There were so many story that my friends and I got
when we were in the tour such as there was my friend who got lost, ran out of fuel in the
middle of jungle, and so forth. But it was interesting, because it was the first moment that
I ever had in touring.
We arrived at Pangandaran Beach at 02.00 p.m. and we stright to move to the
beach. At beach we just lied down there to stretch our muscle because of 5 hours riding. We
also had a lunch there by eating some foods that we brought from Cirebon. That was very
nice moment when we shared our own food to others.
After we had enough rest, we began to explore Pangandaran Beach. Started by
exploring the beach, and the sea using rented boat. Then we went to dive by renting some
diving equipment. We could see many coral there. We just had 2 hours to enjoy
Pangandaran Beach because we had to come back to Cirebon.
We came back to Cirebon at 04.00 p.m. It was imposible to ride in the night, so we
just decided to stay over in our friend house in Ciamis and we started to come back in the
morning. That was very nice experience that I and my friends ever had. We would never
forget that moment.

Victoria Caroline Beckham is an English singer-songwriter, dancer, model, actress,


fashion designer and business woman. She was born on April 17, 1974, in Essex, England.
She became famous in the 1990's with the pop group "The Spice Girl"and was known as
Posh Spice. In 1999, she married the Manchester United and England footballer, David

Alfred Bernhard Nobel was a Swedish chemist, engineer, innovator, and ornament
manufacturer. He was the inventor of dynamite. He also owned Bofors, which he had
redirected from its previous role as primarily an iron and steel producer to a major
manufacturer of cannons and other ornaments. He held 355 different patents, dynamite
being the most famous. In his last will, he used his enormous fortune to institute the Nobel
Prizes. The synthetic element nobelium was named after him. He was the third son of
Immanuel Nobel and Andriette Ahlsell Nobel. Born in Stckholm on 21 October 1833, he
went with my family to Saint Petersburg in 1842, where his father invented modern
plywood. He studied chemistry with Professor Nikolay Nickolaevich Zinin. When he was
18, he went to the United States to study chemistry for four years and worked for a short
period under John Ericsson, who designed the American Civil War ironclad USS Monitor.
Returning to Sweden, with his father after bankruptcy of his family business, he
then devoted himself to the study of explosives, and especially to the save manufacture and
use of nitroglycerine (discovered in 1847 by Acanio Sobrero, one of his fellow students
under Theophile-Jules Pelouze at the University of Turin). A big explosion occurred on 2
September 1864 at his factory in Heleneborg in Stockholm, killing five people. Among them
was his younger brother, Emil.
The foundations of the Nobel Prize were laid in 1895 when Alfred Nobel wrote his
last will, leaving much of his wealth for its establishment. Since 1901, the prize has
honoured men and women for outstanding achievements in physics, chemistry, medicine,
literature and for work in peace.

The Near-Death Story of Mellen-Thomas Benedict


In 1982,1 died from terminal cancer. My condition was non-operable. I chose not to have
chemotherapy. I was given six to eight months to live. Before this time, I had become
increasingly despondent over the nuclear crisis, the ecology crisis, and so forth. I came to
believe that nature had made a mistake-that we were probably a cancerous organism on
the planet. And that is what eventually killed me.

Before my near-death experience, I tried all sort of alternative healing methods. None
helped. So I determined that this was between me and God. I had never really considered
God. Neither was I into any kind of spirituality and alternative healing. I read various
religions and philosophies. They gave hope that there was something on the other side.

I had no medical insurance, so my life savings went overnight on tests. Unwilling to drag
my family into this, I determined to handle this myself. I ended up in hospice care and was
blessed with an angel for my hospice caretaker, whom I will call "Anne." She stayed with
me through all that was to follow.

G. Definition Of Narative text


Narrative text is a story with complication or problematic events and it tries to find
the resolutions to solve the problems. An important part of narrative text is the
narrative mode, the set of methods used to communicate the narrative through a
process narration.

H. Communicative purpose/ Social Function


The Purpose of Narrative Text is to amuse or to entertain the reader with a story.

I. Generic structure / text organization (systematics of writing):


1. OrientationSets the scene: where and when the story happened and introduces
the participants of the story: who and what is involved in the story.
2. Complication : Tells the beginning of the problems which leads to the crisis
(climax) of the main participants.
3. Resolution : The problem (the crisis) is resolved, either in a happy ending or in a
sad (tragic) ending
4. Re-orientation/Coda : This is a closing remark to the story and it is optional. It
consists of a moral lesson, advice or teaching from the writer

J. Language features (the main linguistic features):


1. Using part action verb: Climbed, Turned, Brought, etc.
2. Using specific noun as pronoun of person, animal in the story. Example: The
king, the queen, etc.
3. Using adjectives which are for noun phrase. Example: Long black, hair, two red
apples, etc.
4. Using time connectives and Conjunctions to arrange the events. Examples:
Then, before, after, soon, etc.
5. Using adverbs and adverbial phrase to show the location of events. Examples:
Here, in the mountain, ever after, etc.
6. Using dialogue to elicit an emotional response from the reader.

THE MOUSE DEER AND THE ELEPHANT

One day, there was a mouse deer. He was trapped in a hole that had been made by
a group of hunters.
The mouse deer screamed for help but no one heard him. It was hopeless for him to
escape from the trap. He waited and waited and finally an elephant came. He was happy
and asked for help but the elephant was not smart enough to help him. The elephant did
not know how to do.
In the end, the mouse deer got a bright idea. He said to the elephant, “Come down
here! Come down to this hole so you can help me get out!” Foolishly The elephant agreed
and followed the mouse deer’s order. The elephant jumped down to the hole.
Of course the mouse deer quickly hopped on the elephant’s body and then hopped
out of the hole. He was free and leaving the elephant trapped in the hole in turn.

A man in Puerto Rico had a wonderful parrot. There was no another parrot like it.
It was very, very smart. This parrot would say any word-except one. He would not say the
name of the town where he was born. The name of the town was Catano.
The man tried to teach the parrot to say Catano. But the bird would not say the word. At
first the man was very nice, but then he got angry. “You are a stupid bird! Why can’t you
say the word? Sat Catano, or I will kill you!” but the parrot would not say it. Then the man
got to so angry that the shouted over and over, “Say Catano, or I’ll kill you!” but the bird
would not talk.
One day after trying for many hours to make the bird say Catano, the man got very angry.
He picked up the bird and threw him into the chicken house. “You are more stupid than
the chickens. Soon I will eat them, and I will eat you, too.”
In the chicken house there are four old chickens. They were for Sunday’s dinner. The man
put the parrot in the chicken house and left.
The next day the man came back to the chicken house. He opened the door and stopped. He
was very surprised at what he saw!

A kangaroo is an animal found only in Australia, although it has a smaller
relative, called a wallaby, which lives on the Australian island of Tasmania and also in

A farmer came across a bird with a broken wing. He picked it up, took it home and
looked after it lovingly, even though his wife complained bitterly about his wasting too
much time on the creature.
After some time, the wing mended and, because the bird did not want the farmer
to have kept on arguing with his wife all the time, it decided to go back to its nest.

A. DEFINITION NEWS ITEM


Judging from its name, the term news is already familiar to our ears. If translated
News means news. English experts define News Item as follows: "News item is a text
which reads about events of the day. The events are considered newsworthy or
important ". So news item is a text or text that provides updated information (updated,
hottest and teraktual) where the information is feasible and important to be reported.

B. COMMUNICATIFE PURPOSE
The main purpose of making news texts is certainly to provide information to readers or
news listeners about the latest news. So the condition should be warm news, so usually
given date and place news.

C. EXAMPLE OF NEWS ITEM 1 ( ONE)


Tangerang Floodwaters Rose
Tangerang Disaster Mitigation (Tagana) teams evacuated hundreds of residents
from their homes in the Ciledug Indah housing complex in Ciledug district Tangerang after
floodwaters inundated the area on Wednesday.
Water of up to 50-centimeters-deep began to inundate the housing complex on
Tuesday. By Wednesday morning, the water reached up to two meters in some parts of the
complex.
Many vehicles belonging to residents were also trapped in the flood because the
owners did not have a chance to move them to a higher place.
Temporary shelters inside government offices and mosques were set up to house the
evacuates. But some residents refused to leave their homes, citing security concerns. They

Town Contaminated
Moscow – A Russian journalist has uncovered evidence of another Soviet nuclear
catastrophe, which killed 10 sailors and contaminated an entire town.
Yelena Vazrshavskya is the first journalist to speak to people who witnessed the
explosion of a nuclear submarine at the naval base of shkotovo – 22 near Vladivostock.
The accident, which occurred 13 months before the Chernobyl disaster, spread
radioactive fall-out over the base and nearby town, but was covered up by officials of the
Soviet Union. Residents were told the explosion in the reactor of the Victor-class
submarine during a refit had been a ‘thermal’ and not a nuclear explosion. And those

(Reuters Health) - Half of all heart patients made at least one medication-related
mistake after leaving the hospital, and guidance from a pharmacist didn't seem to
reduce those errors, in a new study.

Octogenarian Kenneth Smith spent hours a day selling kindling for $5 a bag. He started
