Scaffolding & Related Skills Marking Sheet Section B (70 Marks)

Question 1

a) Diagonal AB (4 marks)

Cos 45 deg = Opp/ Adj

Diagonal Length = 2/ cos 45

= 2√2 m

Diagonal Length AB = 8√2 m

b) Length AC (3 marks)

Tan 45 deg = length of standard / Transom Lrgth

Length of Standard = 2 *1

= 2m

Length of AC = 2 *4

= 8m

c) Area of Plan (3 marks)

Total Area of Side view plan = Length * Width

= ((6*2 + (4*2+1.2))

= 110.4 m2

Question 2

a) Schedules (3 marks)
i. Tools
ii. Materials
iii. Workers

b) Why use boundary Pegs (2 marks)

i. To mark the specific area where scaffolding structure are to be mounted
ii. To notify workers of the proposed working location thus reducing movement in the specified
place resulting in minimum delays in preliminary work progress.
Question 3

a) Numbered Elements (6 marks)

1) Transom
2) Ledger
3) Standard
4) Steel/ Timber Platform
5) Guardrail
6) Base Jacks

b) Timber Sole (2 marks)

It acts as a stable platform when scaffolding structures are built on loose/ unstable ground
conditions. It will prevent the scaffold from collapsing due to equal distribution of force.

Question 4

a) (8 marks)
1. Check substructure conditions

2. Provide soleplate with base jacks

3. Secure standards onto base jacks and insert ledgersto create bays.

4. The first bay is checked for squareness and plumbness,Increase the bay height as per roof slab height

5. Use double headed jack on top of standards to accommodate bearers which in turn will hold a deck

panel.

6. Standard props can also be utilized as it allows

speedy erection and stripping without tools.

7. Insert wooden bearers onto which deck panel (steel

&wooden) is provided. The deck panel will act as the

formwork of the slab.

b) Formwork for a concrete wall is normally built
up on both sides of the wall. Reinforcement bars
are laid on wires before the spreaders are placed
and the wall is tied. The studs are approximately
600 mm apart. All studs must be braced
