Stability of Floating Bodies

Stability is the ability of a floating body in fluid returns to its original position after being tilted about the
horizontal axis. Stability is the ability of a floating body in fluid returns to its original position after being
tilted about the horizontal axis.

Show the below image and show the labels one by one I sync with the audio

Center of the gravity(CG)

Center of buoyancy(CB)

Metacenter(MC) The stability of the floating body is depending on the position of the center of
the gravity(CG), the center of buoyancy(CB) and metacenter(MC).

Animate like tilt the ship and center of buoyancy point as shown in the image.

Refer the below image link http://www.cruisingonstrider.us/images/Metacenter1.gif

The metacenter is the point of intersection of the vertical axis through the center of buoyancy of
the floating body when it is in equilibrium and a vertical line through new position of the center of
buoyancy when it is slightly disturbed.

Highlight the text CG and CB in sync with the audio.

The floating body is in equilibrium state only if the center of gravity is above the center of buoyancy.
The floating body is in equilibrium state on vertical axis only if the center of gravity is above the
center of buoyancy.

Condition for stability of floating body

Stable

Unstable The condition of floating body can be defined in two ways.

Stable

Unstable

Animate the ship is tilted and which comes to its original position. Also, show the TOS in the animation
below in sync with the first part of the audio.
Show all the labels and highlight MC in sync with the second part of the audio.

Animate tilt the ship as shown in the image below in sync with the third part of the audio.

Animate the object again comes to its original position in sync with the audio. Stable equilibrium

If the floating body is able to return to its original state when it is slightly disturbed, then the body is in
the stable.

Stable equilibrium

If the floating body is able to return to its original state when it is slightly disturbed, then the body is in
the stable.

It occurs only when the metacenter lies above the center of gravity, and center of buoyancy.

When a floating body is slightly rotated, the weight will produce the moment against the rotation.

So that, the body becomes to its original position, thus the floating body is stable.

Animate the ship is tilted and it drew to the water. Also, show the TOS in the animation below in sync
with the first part of the audio.

Show all the labels and highlight MC in sync with the second part of the audio.

Animate tilt the ship as shown in the image below in sync with the third part of the audio.
Animate the object drown in the water in sync with the audio. Unstable equilibrium

If the floating body is not able to return to its original state when it is slightly disturbed, then the body is
unstable.

Unstable equilibrium

If the floating body is not able to return to its original state when it is slightly disturbed, then the body is
unstable.

It occurs only when the metacenter lies below the center of gravity.

When a floating body is slightly rotated, the weight will produce the moment towards the rotation.

So that, the body may drown to fluid, thus the floating body is unstable.

Highlight the label MB in the below image.

Procedure to find the stability of floating object

The distance between metacenter and center of buoyancy is called as MB. Let’s see the procedure
to find the stability of floating object.

To determine any floating object is stable or unstable, it is necessary to find the distance between
metacenter and center of buoyancy. This distance is called as MB.

Show the TOS in sync with the audio. MB=I/V_d

Where,

I= Least moment of inertia of the horizontal section

V_d= Volume of the displaced fluid This MB is calculated by the formula MB is equal to I divided by
VD.
Where I is the least moment of inertia of the horizontal section and VD is the volume of displaced fluid.

Show the TOS in sync with the audio. Step 1: Locate the center of buoyancy on floating object. It is
computed by measuring the distance from bottom of the object to cb. This distance is represented by
γ_cb. First, locate the center of buoyancy on the floating object.

It is computed by measuring the distance from the bottom of the object to CB. This distance is
represented by gamma CB.

Show the TOS in sync with the audio. Step 2: Locate the center of gravity, by measuring the distance
from bottom of the object to cg. And refer it as γ_cg. Then, locate the center of gravity, by measuring
the distance from the bottom of the object to CG. And refer it as gamma CG.

Show the TOS in sync with the audio. Step 3: Determine the value of MB by finding the I and v_d.
Now determine the value of MB by finding the I and VD.

Show the TOS in sync with the audio. Step 4: Compute the value of metacenter γ_mc=γ_cb+MB.
Finally, compute the value of metacenter gamma MC is equal to gamma CB plus MB.

Show the TOS in sync with the audio. Step 5: If the γ_mc>γ_cg then the object is stable.

If the γ_mc<γ_cg then the object is unstable. By this result,

If the gamma MC is greater than gamma CG then the object is stable.

If the gamma MC is less than gamma CG then the object is unstable.
