Course Description:

The Personal Finance course is divided into four sections: I. Preparing to live independently, II. Preparing
to earn a living. III. Becoming a responsible consumer and IV. Protecting and managing resources. The
overall goal of the course is to prepare students to become responsible citizens and workers in our
society. First we will develop financial goals, understand incomes, needs and expenses, learn procedures
for a successful job search, and develop an understanding of the various forms used for work and
income tax purposes. Next we will work on becoming responsible consumers by learning about
consumer’s rights and responsibilities as well as understanding shopping options and practices for
meeting consumer needs. Finally the class will classify health and life insurance, learn about personal
credit, options for saving and investing, goals for financial planning and procedures for managing
personal income and expenditures.

North Carolina Standard Course of Study Objectives:

Students will:

 Module 1 – Understand how to take charge of your financial well-being (11%)


 Module 2 – Understand the principles of managing your money (15%)
 Module 3 – Understand the principles of earning (25%)
 Module 4 – Understand the principles of receiving (8%)
 Module 5 – Understand the principles of saving and investing (11%)
 Module 6 – Understand the principles of spending (includes protecting and borrowing) (26%)
 Module 7 – Understand the principles of giving (4%)

 USB Flash Drive – 2GB (Optional) mainly used to backup work

 2 inch binder for notes and keeping up with classwork

 Spiral Notebook (Bell Ringer Journal)

Structure of the Course:

Daily warm ups with bell ringers located on the board when you come to class everyday. This is
to be completed during the first 5 minutes of class.

Worksheets:

Worksheets will be given over the period of the semester to actively assess knowledge
retention and provide feedback to prepare for weekly quizzes and tests.

Tests:

Tests will be given over the period of the semester to assess student knowledge and provide
feedback to prepare for the State CTE Post-Assessment Final Exam.

Final Exam:

A Pre and Post-Assessment Exam will be given by the state at the end of the semester. This is a
required exam for which there are no exemptions.

Grading Criteria:

The grading criteria are broken into classroom projects, classwork, tests, and the final
assessment.

Expectations and Policies:

 All students should be mature, motivated, and willing to broaden their understanding of
the course material, and be ready to work hard every day.
 Attendance is extremely important. Attendance will be guided by the new AHS
attendance policy. The CTE make-up schedule will be posted as soon as possible. You
are expected to attend class regularly and to make up any work missed while you were
absent. MAKE-UP WORK IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. Check the Moodle and your team
leader for any assignments that were missed.
 Cell Phones AND Head Phones must be turned off and out of sight between 8:30-3:24. If
you have your phone out during these hours, school policy states that you will be
assigned to IIS (please see new school policy). No headphones will be allowed in the
classroom unless it is for an assignment.
 All Asheboro High School policies and classroom rules will be rigidly enforced according
to the Student Handbook in such areas as discipline, attendance, appearance,
electronics policy, academic honesty, etc. – no exceptions! Students should be familiar
with the Student Handbook and be prepared to abide by its rules and policies.

Classroom Rules and Procedures:

 Stay attentive during class and focused on your own work.

 Respect your teacher, your classmates, and the equipment at all times.

1st Occurrence – Oral warning


2nd Occurrence – Detention and phone call to parents
3rd Occurrence – Office referral

 Be quiet and respectful when the teacher is talking or when a student is asking or
answering a question.

 Food and drink are not allowed so as to protect the Chrome Books.
 Projects and assignments will have specific deadlines that must be met.
