Separating Mixtures Lab

Materials:
● Cup with pinhole on the bottom
● Coffee filter
● Cups
● Pepper
● Salt
● Oil

Procedures:
1. Mix salt, oil, and pepper in a cup.
2. Figure out how to separate everything!

To seperate:
1. Add water to the cup to dissolve the salt
2. Separate pepper: Pour the mixture through a coffee filter to strain out the pepper
3. Separate oil: Pour the mixture into the cup with a pinhole on the bottom. Let the salt
water solution drip out into another cup
4. Separate salt: Place the saltwater solution in the sun, and salt will be left after the
water evaporates
Chromatography Lab

Materials:
● Isopropyl alcohol
● Cup
● Paper
● Pencil
● Tape
● Black marker

Procedures:
1. Fill a cup with about 1 cm of isopropyl alcohol
2. Use the black pen to draw a large black dot near the bottom of your strip of paper

3. Tape the paper onto a pencil and place the pencil over the cup. The end closest to
the the ink should be put in, but the ink should not be touching the alcohol
4. Observe the changes. The components of the ink will separate as water moves up
the paper
