TUTORIAL 3 DC Machines

1. A separately excited DC generator running at 1400 rpm produces induced voltage of 200
Volts. The generator has an armature resistance 0.2Ω, and field winding resistance of 60Ω
with 120V supply. If the machine delivers a current of 12 A, Calculate (a) the terminal
voltage (Vt), (b) heat dissipated in the armature, (c) the developed torque Td, and (d) the
total input power Pin if the rotational losses is 120W. [Ans: (a) 197.6V, (b) 28.8W, (c)
16.57 N.m, (d) 2760W]

2. A shunt generator delivering output of 100-kW at 230-V has RA = 0.05  and RF = 57.5
. It has a total mechanical and core loss of 1.8 kW. Calculate
(a) the generator efficiency at full-load and
(b) if N = 3000 revolutions / minute, find the torque applied.

3. A short-shunt cumulative compound generator has a terminal voltage of 240V when it


delivers 125A. The shunt-field current is 5A, the armature resistance is 25mΩ, and the
series field resistance is 15mΩ. At its operating speed of 600rpm, the rotational losses is
3kW. Determine (a)the efficiency and the torque supplied by the prime mover, (b) Sketch
its power flow diagram.

4. A 120 V, 1500 rpm shunt DC motor draws a line current of 26 A. The armature and field
resistances are 0.1Ω and 120Ω respectively. Determine the resistance to be added in
series with the armature circuit to reduce the speed to 50% at the same torque. [Ans:
2.34]

5. A 120 V, 1500 rpm DC shunt motor draws a line current of 26 A. The armature and field
resistances are 0.1Ω and 120Ω respectively. Determine the resistance to be added in
series with the field circuit to double the speed. Assume   IF and armature current
increases by 25%. [Ans: 121.28 ]

6. A 15 kW, 240 V, 500 rpm DC shunt motor has a nominal full-load current of 70 A. The
shunt field copper loss and armature copper loss contribute 10% and 30% respectively to
the total losses. Determine
(a) the total losses and efficiency at full-load.
(b) the shunt field current.
(c) the armature resistance and the back-emf.

7. A 4-pole, 230V DC shunt motor has 888 wave –connected conductors. It draws a field
current of 0.6A to give a no load flux of 6 mWb. The armature resistance is 0.8. Calculate
(a) the motor speed at no load current of 2A.
(b) what would be the motor current (line) and speed when it develops a torque of
29.6 Nm?
(c) what is the speed regulation from no load to the torque at part (b)?
8. A 4-pole DC shunt generator with a shunt field winding resistance of 100 Ω and an
armature resistance of 1 Ω has 400 lap-connected conductors in its armature. The flux per
pole is 20 mWb. The rotational loss is 500 W. A load of 10 Ω is connected across the
armature and the generator is driven at 1200 rpm. Determine the followings.
(a) The induced emf
(b) The terminal voltage
(c) The input power
(d) The efficiency
