ECU - Electronic Control Unit Site news

In terminology of VW-group it's any electronic device, which has been carried out some logic function.
November 30, 2012
Sometimes it looks like nonsens - even simple relay can be called ECU.
Content update We are starting
The coding of Electronic Control Unit used for explain the ECU where it is and what "neighbours" big site update. We are sorry for
does it have. Very often on modern cars the coding is crossed with adaptation. bugs and missed content.
We are especially grateful for
Adaptation of the Electronic Control Unit serves to explain to the ECU with whom and how to talk (If financial support of our site
we have started to speak allegories) and serves as storehouse of various adjustable parameters. (
part of memory in the Control Unit which can be changed via internal software )

Measured Values Blocks ( MWB ) – various parameters being inbound or calculated. Considering to
value of MWB Electronic Control Unit, trying to "control"... Using of MWB allows you ( if you know the
basic parameters ) to find out "close to boundary" or temporarily arising ( intermittent, sporadic )
malfunctions and many other useful things at competent use.

Dash panel insert, reading adaption channels
This document serves as an additional information reference source on the adaption channels to be read
and entered (in the case of manual coding) when replacing the dash panel insert (combination unit).

The data readouts (coding and adaption channels) are outputted in a message and can be printed if
problems occur in reading-in the data to the new dash panel insert. To do so, choose Print from the
menu bar at the bottom and then Function test log. Select the output medium beforehand. In addition,
the communication during reading is check ed in order to detect any incorrect data readout. If problems
occur in reading out the coding or an adaption channel, they are indicated in this message with the
phrase Could not be read - refer to function description. If problems occur in reading in the coding or
an adaption channel, they are indicated in this message with the phrase Could not be stored - refer to
function description.

A special case in this regard is represented by adaption channels 29 and 47-48. adaption channel 29
relates to fuel gauge sender 2 and can only be read if the vehicle is coded for quattro in the dash panel
insert. Adaption channels 47(sooting) and 48 (thermal loading) are only present in conjunction with diesel
engines.

Adaption channel 3:
I Consumption correction
85% - 115% (in 5% increments)
Correction: 85% 90% 95% 100% 105% 110% 115%
Value in channel: 85 90 95 100 105 110 115

Adaption channel 9:
I km/mileage reading/10 e.g.: 5000km on dash, 500 in adaption channel
(in case of mileage coding in miles)
Note: Adaption of this channel by vehicle self-diagnosis must be carried out by way of the access
authorisation function "13861".
Import of the kilometre reading from the old dash panel insert into the new one is linked to the following
conditions:

open in browser PRO version Are you a developer? Try out the HTML to PDF API pdfcrowd.com
The odometer in the new dash panel insert must show less than 100 km.
It is only possible to enter a kilometre reading greater than 100 km.
If the dash panel insert is coded for miles (Great Britain and USA), the input must be in miles.
After an incorrect input further attempts are possible, until a distance of 5 km has been exceeded one
time following the first change.
An incorrect input after 5 km may mean the unit is no longer usable.

YZ The vehicle's kilometre/mileage reading can be determined retrospectively from the

maintenance tables, service booklets or repair history.

Adaption channel 19:

I Radio clock synchronisation time
Vehicles with PR number are fitted with an external radio clock module in the rear bumper. With
adaption channel 19 the synchronisation time can be set, with the value "0" corresponding to "no radio
clock fitted". In vehicles with radio clock, the value should be set to "20" for a 20-minute synchronisation.
With the first battery voltage the connections to the receiver module are checked in test mode. The check
status is displayed in measured value block 2 at the 2nd position. The synchronisation time can be
adapted from 0 to 50 minutes.

I Tank characteristic (fuel gauge sender 1 - G, for front-wheel drive and Quattro vehicles)
Parallel shift of tank characteristic by +/-32 Ohms by arrow keys on VAG tester
Correction: -32 ... -2 -1 0 +1 +2 ... +32
Value in channel: 96 ... 126 127 128 129 130 ... 160

Adaption channel 31:

I Wet calibration
This is used to inform the dash panel insert unit of the tank content on initial fill-up. With the first terminal
term. 15 On the dash panel insert unit corrects the current measured fuel gauge sender resistance to the
litres figure in this channel.

Adaption channel 32:

I Non-recordable tank volume
The volume not recordable by the fuel gauge sender is notified to the dash panel insert via this channel.
Before the initial fill-up is entered in channel 31, the dead volume must be entered.

Adaption channel 33:

I Full calibration
This channel is specially for service cases in which the tank gauge needle on the dash panel does not
reach the full indicator when the tank is full. Correction of the tank gauge indication is started by the input
value "65535". In this process, the characteristic is not shifted in parallel as in channel 30, but above a
readout 1/2 the characteristic line is elongated upwards or shortened. So in the lower range, specifically
as from the reserve mark, the readout remains unchanged. The output value is 0 (value in tester is 128).
The elongation can be varied by ± 16 Ohms (value from 112-144).

Adaption channel 35:

I Engine speed threshold
Various warnings, such as the oil pressure warning (at 1500 rpm) are linked to engine speed thresholds.
In order to configure such settings in a variable way, the engine speed threshold can be altered in 250
rpm increments. The basic setting is 1500 rpm and can be adapted with an offset of max. 1000 rpm.

Adaption channel 38:

I Oil Min detection ON/OFF
With this channel the "Oil Min warning" function can be deactivated when the oil level is low. At present
this warning is permanently present for all vehicles, however. The channel can only be altered after
entering an access authorisation function with "13861".

Adaption channel 39:

I TOG fitted YES/NO (TOG = oil level/temperature sender G266)
This channel determines whether the TOG sensor is fitted in the dash panel insert or in a different control
unit (e.g. the engine control unit). Depending on that setting, the diagnosis of the sensor is then
deactivated. At present the sensor is fitted in all vehicles. The channel can only be altered after entering
an access authorisation function with "13861".

If the dash panel insert is replaced by vehicle self-diagnosis, the correct
sequence must be ensured when reading-in the ESI adaption channels to the
new dash panel insert.

If readout of the adaption channels via Guided Fault Finding from the old dash panel insert is
no longer possible, necessitating manual adaption of the channels in the new dash panel
insert, individual subroutines for adaption of each channels are called up. In this, the ESI
channels are automatically adapted in the correct sequence.
