Dear Parents and Staff:

By now you are likely aware of the events that occurred on Thursday, January 11 at the Canal
Lock apartments. We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life and our heartfelt condolences
go out to the friends and family of everyone involved.

At 10:01 AM this morning, we were advised that a police situation was occurring and our
emergency protocols were immediately activated. The schools were placed on lockdown and
remained on lockdown until approximately 10:55 AM, when the Ellenville Police Department
advised that the situation was contained. A notification about the lockdown was posted on our
website, as well as on Nixle, the public emergency notification system. Email notifications were
also sent to those who have signed up for the District's emergency alert service.

We are aware that this incident will lead to many questions, concerns, and deep emotions among
members of our school community. To ensure all students and staff have the emotional and
mental support needed to cope with this tragedy, we have arranged for counselors from the
Countywide Traumatic Event Team of Ulster County and the District's Employee Assistance
Program (EAP) to be available in our school buildings. Counselors were onsite today and will
stay as long as necessary.

We are committed to providing the support our school community needs to cope with this tragic
event. This afternoon, all staff will be briefed on the resources that are available and we will
discuss plans for supporting students and each other in the midst of this crisis. Friday, we will
also ensure students know support is available to them and understand how to access it.

Please remember that this is a police matter, and therefore all information about the incident
itself will be communicated from the Ellenville Police Department. Our small community is
filled with strong, determined, and compassionate residents, and we are reminded that we will
get through this crisis by supporting one another and working together.
