Lesson Plan

1. Colorado Common Core 4th Grade Social Studies Standard

4.1.2 The historical eras, individuals, groups, ideas and themes in Colorado history and
their relationships to key events in the U.S.

Describe interactions among people and cultures that have lived in Colorado
2. Essential Question:

1. Why did people of various cultures migrate to and settle in Colorado?

2. How have various individuals, groups, and ideas affected the development of

Colorado?

3. Learning Objective:

Use primary sources to learn about the past

Identify social and economic decisions that caused people to migrate to different

regions.

Describe life in a different historical era.

4. Relevance & Application

The context and information from the past is used to make connections and inform

current decisions. For example, Colorado has had a history of boom and bust cycles that

should influence the decisions of city and state planners.

5. Activities:

 K-W-L chart

What do you want to know about our state?

 Teacher will conduct a “just-in-time” lesson on internet research. This will

include reliable sources and safe/effective searches.

 Colorado Explorers Project


LESSON PLAN 3

o Divide class into 4 groups

o Each group is assigned an explorer to research (Pike, Long, Gunnison, or

Fremont)

o Students are to conduct research to answer the following:

 Tell us about your explorer

 What discoveries did they make?

 What adventures did they have?

o Groups are to make a map of the explorer’s route through CO

 Students use available resources including internet and text book

 Guided handout will be provided

 Map should include a key, a compass rose, and label points

of interest where they may have stopped or where towns

are now.

6. Class Discussion

a. Groups present their findings in an informal presentation

b. We discuss Essential Questions following the presentations

7. Assessment

Students write a journal entry as a member of the expedition detailing the adventures of

the past few days of your journey.
