SECTION THREE – BAUER MV 120-5.

5-2

INTRODUCTION

The Bauer MV 120-5.5-2 compressor is an air flow-cooled compressor with three cylinders.
The air is compressed in three stages with inter-cooling between each stage and with airflow
cooling on all surfaces.

The purification system comprises of a final condensate separator to remove oil/water

condensate and a long-life filter cartridge. The filter cartridge processes in three stages:
drying, neutralisation and micro-filtering.

DESCRIPTION OF COMPRESSOR

The compressor is a free-standing, electrically powered unit mounted in a vertical noise

suppression cabinet. Air for compression enters via a micronic air intake filter and undergoes
three compression stages up to a maximum permissible delivery pressure of 330 bar.
Throughout the process the air is filtered and cooled to meet the required standard for
breathing air.

The compressor is equipped with an automatic condensate drain system which drains all
separators between the individual stages and also the final separator, whilst the compressor is
running. The operation is calibrated to operate every fifteen minutes for a 6 second period
while the compressor is running. The condensate is collected in a removable drain tank of 5
litre capacity.

In addition the compressor is also equipped with a ‘Securus’ filter cartridge monitoring
system which constantly monitors the saturation of the filter cartridge. The condition of the
cartridge is indicated by a series of lights on the front of the ‘Securus’ unit.

DESCRIPTION OF CHARGING PANEL

The Bauer charging panel is a remote charging facility, which eliminates the flexible leads
for charging. A fixed line from the compressor final delivery connects to the charging panel.
At the panel, the delivery air is sent to the charging adaptors on the table via four lines
operated by a lever to open and close. The charging adaptors on the table are numbered 1 – 4
reading from left to right, which correspond with the similar operating levers on the panel.

LOCATION

There are five Bauer MV 120 -5.5-2 compressors based at the Brigade Training &
Development Centre, Shrewsbury, Oswestry, Ludlow and Market Drayton Fire Stations.

1. THE MASTER SWITCH CONTROLS THE MAINS POWER SUPPLY TO THE

COMPRESSOR. SYMBOL ‘1’ IS ON AND SYMBOL ‘0’ IS OFF.

2. THE ON/OFF BUTTONS SWITCH THE COMPRESSOR ON AND OFF. GREEN FOR
ON AND RED FOR OFF.

3. ILLUMINATION OF THE OIL WARNING LIGHT INDICATES THAT THE OIL

LEVEL IS LOW AND SHOULD BE TOPPED UP TO THE CORRECT LEVEL.

4. THE PRESSURE GAUGE INDICATES THE CHARGING SYSTEM PRESSURE. THE

COMPRESSOR OPERATION IS SEMI AUTOMATIC AND SET TO STOP
CHARGING WHEN THE PRESSURE REACHES 330 BAR AND TO RESTART
WHEN PRESSURE DROPS BELOW 280BAR.

OIL LEVEL INDICATOR
There is a sight glass on either side of the
compressor block which is accessed by
removing the side panels of the cabinet.

The oil level should be between the two

indicating marks on the casting. If the oil level
is low, the oil should be topped up via the oil
filler port which has a red cap and is sited on top
of the compressor block. The compressor should
be topped up using ‘anderol’ oil which is
available from stores.

THE COMPRESSOR HAS AN AUTOMATIC CONDENSATE DRAIN INTO A 5 LITRE

CONTAINER ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE CABINET. WHEN THIS REACHES HALF FULL,
NOTIFY TECHNICAL SERVICES WHO WILL ARRANGE EMPTYING. AT
SHREWSBURY, THE CONDENSATE MAY ONLY BE POURED INTO A DRAIN ON THE
DRILL YARD BENEATH WHICH THERE IS AN OIL SEPARATOR.

TO CHARGE CYLINDERS

• Connect cylinders to the charging adapters on the compressor table. (Minimum of

three twin packs at any time).

• Open (pull forward) the black operating lever on the charging panel, for each
connection required.

• Open the cylinder valve fully. The cylinder pressures will now equalise.

• Start the compressor. Charging will automatically stop when the correct pressure has
been obtained.

TO RELEASE ON COMPLETION OF CHARGING

• Close the cylinder valve fully.

• Close (push back) the black operating lever on each lead used. The lines will now
bleed down.

• Disconnect the cylinders from the charging adapters.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS

The following safety precautions should be observed when using the Bauer MV 120-5.5-2
compressor and Bauer charging panel:

• Never operate the black lever unless a cylinder is connected to the line for charging.

• Do not operate the compressor if any doubt exists as to its serviceability.

• Check the compressor log sheet (FB75) to ensure that an oil check has been carried
out. If in doubt, check the oil level before charging as detailed in the ‘Operating
Instructions’. Check the air purity certificate to ensure that it is in date. Air purity
checks are carried out every three months.

• In the event of an emergency, stop the compressor at the emergency stop (if fitted) or
the main switch and not at the stop button on the compressor.

DEFECT REPORTING

All defects to compressors must be reported to Technical Services during normal office hours
and to Control outside office hours. Technical Services will arrange for all repairs to be
carried out. The compressor must be taken out of operational service until repaired by the
authorised contractor.
