ARC116:HISTORY OF ARCHITECTURE-I

Course Outcomes: Through this course students should be able to

• observe development in architecture through various historical periods

• categorize the change in design styles with respect to change in society

• identify the architectural styles and elements

Unit I
Greek architecture :classical : historic evolution, greek temples, orders,
architecture features of greek stadium, application of golden ratio, architecture
features and construction methods of famous greek structures
Unit II
Roman architecture : classical : characteristics of roman architecture, contribution
of marcus vitruvius polio in military and civil engineering works eg. roads, aqua
ducts,roman masonry types, methods of vault and dome construction, pantheon,
thermae of carcacalla, colosseum, circus maximus at rome, pont du gard, nimes, arch
of septimius severus, basilica of trajan, tuscan and composite order
Unit III
Early christian architecture:ecclesiastical : historical background, form evolution
of church, architectural features of evolution of early christian structures: basilica
church of st peter's, st clemente, baptistery at nocera, regional influences on it’s
development, introduction of technological advancements eg. vaults,squinches,
pendentives
Unit IV
Byzantine architecture:ecclesiastical : architectural characteristics:historical
background, location, period development of church- basilica types during byzantine
period, architectural features of byzantine structures eg: hagia sophia, regional
influences on byzantine architecture, introduction of technological advancements of
byzantine period e.g. vaults, squinches, pendentives application of building materials,
construction methods as per development of byzantine architecture
Unit V
Medieval architecture: ecclesiastical : characteristics of romanesque architecture
spread in different parts of world features of architecture of normans, durham
cathedral ,technological advancement during romanesque period, architectural
characteristics of gothic architecture, early gothic architecture & its significant
examples
Unit VI
Gothic architecture: ecclesiastical : gothic architecture(high and late), cathedral
of pisa, angouleme cathedral, the campanile and baptistery, pisa, architectural
characteristics of india classic gothic architecture & its features under british raj
