STATISTICAL STABILITY OF FLOATING BODIES

I. BACKGROUND
II. OBJECTIVES
1. To determine the center of gravity of a floating body.
2. To investigate the center of buoyancy of floating body.
3. To determine the metacentric height.
4. To develop professional work ethics including precision, neatness, safety and ability to
follow instructions.
III. APPARATUS/ MATERIALS
Plastic tank
Water
Metacentric height apparatus
Meter stick
IV. PROCEDURES
1. Set the horizontal sliding weight to x=_________
2. Move vertical sliding weight to bottom position.
3. Fill tank provided with water and insert floating body.
4. Gradually raise vertical sliding weight and read off angle on the heel indicator.
5. Read off height of sliding weight at the top edge of weight and record if in the table
together with the angle.
V. DATA CALCULATION
Calculation of center of gravity position.
The horizontal position referenced to the center line
𝑀ℎ 𝑋
𝑋𝑠 = = 0.055 x
𝑀+𝑀𝑣 +𝑀ℎ
The vertical position referenced to the underside of the floating body
𝑀𝑣 +(𝑀+𝑀ℎ )𝑍𝑔
𝑍𝑠 = 𝑀+𝑀𝑣 +𝑀ℎ
= 5.364 + 0.156 z
The stability gradient
𝑑𝑋𝑠 𝑋𝑠
=
𝑑𝛼 𝛼
𝑀𝑣 = vertical sliding mass 550 g
𝑀ℎ = horizontal sliding mass 193 g
𝛼= heel angle loading
X= horizontal distance from centerline of the weight
Z= vertical distance of the vertical weight from the bottom of the tank
