Battalion Chief
American City Fire Department

American City, California 47102
Date: August 21, 2013
To: All Firefighters

It gives me great pleasure to announce that firefighter Bill Whitfield has been chosen as this
year’s recipient of the Firefighter of the Year Award. This award is given annually to a
firefighter that demonstrates exceptional courage and devotion to duty while acting on behalf of
the department. It is a prestigious honor that serves to recognize the best of the best within our
ranks.
Mr. Whitfield is a 10-year veteran of our department, having served in several different positions
during his tenure here. He is a certified EMT who is also qualified in hazardous materials
cleanup. Firefighter Whitfield has obtained an Associate’s degree in Fire Science, and is
currently working on his Bachelor’s degree from Career Community College. He also teaches
fire safety to elementary school children in our area.

In choosing the recipient, several things are considered, including years of service, leadership,
and character. What set Mr. Whitfield apart from other candidates was his ability to take charge
of stressful situations, along with the fact that he has served as a mentor for several new
firefighters over the past few months.

Mayor Margaret Henson will formally present this award to Mr. Whitfield at a banquet held at
City Hall on September 14, 2013 at 7 pm. I hope you will make plans to attend this banquet in
order to show your support for one of our own. In the meantime, be sure to extend your personal
congratulations whenever you see him.

Sincerely,

Fred Talley
