INTRODUCTION
Logistics are the heart of modern transport systems. Present modern
technology and spatial developments have improved the cost, reliability and
efficiency of transportation systems. At the same time, the negative environmental
impacts of transportation have gained wide recognition and were the core issues of
sustainability, especially in urban areas. Since the applications of logistics are
generally positive for the efficiency of transport systems, it has been suggested that
logistics are environmentally friendly. It is argued that although logistics may be
linked to less environmentally damaging transportation systems, they have created
a set of paradoxes that may prove to be the contrary to what is believed.
LOGISTICS
Part of the supply chain process that plans, implements, and controls the
efficient, effective flow and storage of goods, services, and related information
from the point of origin to the point of consumption in order to meet customer
requirements.
CITY LOGISTICS
The process of totally optimizing the logistics and transport activities by
private companies in urban areas while considering the traffic environment, traffic
congestion and energy consumption within the framework of a market economy

WHAT IS A SUSTAINABLE SUPPLY CHAIN?

The Management of raw materials and services from suppliers to
manufacturer/service provider to customer and back with improvement of the
social and environmental impacts explicitly considered is called sustainable supply
chain.

PURPOSE OF STUDY
The purpose of the study is to provide transportation models for city logistics.
There is a two way interaction between city logistics and urban traffic congestion,
environment. City logistics are impacted by urban traffic congestions and
environment.

City logistics is mainly classified in to

1) MICRO LOGISTICS

This consists of small quantity deliveries, high density of delivery

points, growing role for small specialized urban vehicles, low automation
and critical human role. So it is critical to optimize operations to minimize
number of vehicles, travel kilometers and idle time.

2) MACRO LOGISTICS

Involves large quantity handling, low density of delivery points, larger

vehicles. It is critical to optimize operations to maximize profit and gain
efficiencies.

Implications for intelligent hierarchical logistics system design to support

collaborative logistics strategies.

Both micro and macro logistics benefit from greater ICT use and intelligent
transportation technologies.

NEED FOR TRANSPORTATION MANAGEMENT

The growth of any urban area is driven by two factors. The primary one is
the establishment of businesses which open up tremendous employment
opportunities and secondly the large migration of people to the urban areas. This
results in large number of people commuting from a large number of residential
pockets, to the Central Business Districts where majority of the business
establishments are located.

On an average an urban commuter spends about 2 - 3 hours every day on the roads
to reach the work place, school or home where as a decade back the same distance
would have been covered in about half the time as that of now. Considering the
exponential growth of the number of Vehicles and the ever increasing population
the situation is bound to reach alarming levels in the near future. At the same time
all the technical advancements made in various fields of Science and Technology
provide effective tools to check, manage and plan the ‘Vehicular traffic’.
FUNCTIONS OF TMS
 Transportation mode and carrier selection
 Management of air and maritime transport
 Real time vehicles tracking
 Service quality control
 Vehicle Load and Route optimization
 Transport costs and scheme simulation
 Shipment batching of orders
 Cost control, KPI reporting and statistics
 Planning and optimizing of terrestrial transport rounds

Typical KPIs include but not limited to:

1. % of On Time Pick Up or Delivery Performance relative to

request.
2. Cost Per Metric - mile; km; Weight; Cube; Pallet.

TECHNOLOGICAL DRIVERS
 Information and communication technologies (ICT)

 ITS for Commercial Vehicle Operations (CVO)

 Two ways communication systems

 Automatic Vehicle Localization (AVL)

 GPS
 Supply Chain Management (SCM)

 EDI, ERP,MRP, RFID

INTELLIGENT TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM:

Deployment key technologies: field elements

• AVI and E SEAL Readers

• In-truck AVI Transponder

• Disposable Electronic container seal

• Weigh in motion

• Programming the e seal

• E seal readers at the borders

COMMERCIAL VEHICLE INFORMATION SYSTEM

NETWORK:
CHALLENGES FACING
 The challenges in effective Transportation management are many.
 The number of Vehicles on the roads is steadily increasing where as the
roads and the land available for building new roads are very limited.
 Managing, redirecting and decongesting the traffic within the existing roads
and space are indeed a challenging task.

BENIFITS:
 Lesser time on roads
 Reduced tempers while driving
 Effective transport planning
 Ease of traffic movement
 Increased Personal safety.
