2. Training programs
There are as many ways of delivering training as there are trainers and training needs. The
sample programs in this section represent only some of the ways units from the training
package can be clustered to achieve full certificate qualifications or statements of attainment.
The order in which Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) deliver units will depend on
factors such as:
• Whether learners enrol in a full qualification (either Certificate II or III)
• Whether learners want to undertake only selected units from a qualification
• Learners’ existing skills and knowledge
• Whether the training is being delivered mainly on the job as part of a New
Apprenticeship.
However, as a general principle, practical activities should be introduced early in the training
program and be included in as many sessions as possible. Between sessions trainees will be
doing a range of follow-up activities, e.g. practising the use of equipment, assisting
experienced broadcasters, undertaking research and working on projects.
Training package qualifications require a holistic approach to delivery and assessment.
Therefore each session usually addresses aspects of several units simultaneously. However,
trainees need to complete several sessions, practise skills over a period of time and work on
projects before they are ready for assessment.
Major Project
Candidates in Program One are required to record a simulated live-to-air program of
30 minutes duration containing:
• music and announcing style appropriate to the target audience
• two announcements (read, but not written by the trainee)
• vox pops recorded by the trainee on a portable recorder and edited by the trainee
into a short segment.
A running sheet and brief self-evaluation of the program must accompany the
recording.
Minor Project
A portfolio containing:
• an outline for a program entitled Radio – the Inside Story.
• raw material (audio or print) for the program. The material can focus on any
one of the following:
• Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC)
• commercial radio
• community radio
• multilingual or non-English language broadcasters, e.g. Special
Broadcasting Service (SBS), full-time ethnic community radio stations,
Greek commercial station 3XY.
This project provides a framework for demonstrating research and information
gathering skills in the context of acquiring knowledge about the radio industry.
Learning Journal
The journal or diary contributes to evidence of the trainee’s ability to collect and
organise information. Here trainees keep copies of assessment tasks or exercises
completed during the training program. Copies of all audio material produced by
trainees should also be kept, as they provide evidence of progress towards achieving
competence.

Assessment
Assessment may take place on the job, off the job or through a combination of these.
Off the job assessment should be undertaken in a closely simulated workplace
environment.
Assessment should be undertaken on a progressive basis throughout the training
program. Work-based projects provide the framework for a holistic approach to
assessing clusters of units. Learning activities and associated assessment tasks have
been devised around an assessment framework based on major and minor projects
supported by a learning journal or diary.
