Question 1.
A signal x(t) bandlimited to W is ideally sampled by the sampling signal g(t) illustrated in the figure
below where T=1/W. For simplicity, assume that spectrum of x(t) has a triangular shape as shown
below.
a) Obtain and sketch the Fourier transform of the sampled signal y(t).
b) Is it possible to recover the original signal x(t) from the sampled signal by a simple filtering
operation?
c) Sketch the block diagram of a system that yields x(t) as its output when y(t) is applied to its input,
specify the blocks used in your system and prove that the output is x(t).
g(t) X(f)
T/2 3T/2
0 T 2T
-W W f
Hint: The sampling signal can be written as the difference of two impulse trains having a period of T
each, the second impulse train being delayed by T/2.
Question 2:
We want to design a system to multiplex signals A(t), B(t) and C(t) which are of bandwidths 30, 70
and 90kHz, respectively. The signals will be sampled at rates greater than Nyquist rate by %20, %50
and %30, and digitized by 8, 16, 8 bit A/D converters, respectively. The A/D converter outputs will be
combined in a frame which also contains a fixed 16 bit synchronization word.

Question 3:
Consider a real bandpass signal x(t) with a center frequency of 60kHz. Its spectrum extends from
42kHz to 78 kHz. We sample the signal at a rate of 80ksamps/s. The samples are held at the same
value until the next sample and the process repeats (sample and hold operation). Let this signal be
called y(t).
Question 4:
A Delta Modulator system is tested with a 10 kHz sinusoidal signal, 1 V peak to peak, at the input.
The signal is sampled at 10 times the Nyquist rate.
What is the step size required to prevent slope overload and to minimize granular (quantization)
noise?
