CAPITALISM AND NATIONALISM IN PRE WAR JAPAN

-BYRON K. MARSHALLL

(by Dharaa)

This book analyses the prewar business ideology basically focusing on how Japan
sustained its old values in the course of economic modernization. Author puts it in mainly
three factors which led to the persistence of traditionalism . First, the role of the state
played the most important role. As always it molded attitudes of people towards the old
values particularly through political indoctrination and by putting regulations in every
possible activity of industries. Second is the changes that were brought in implementing
these values were through onjo shugi that is providing an environment like a family to
among subordinates and superiors. Industries worked through this mechanism of
affection towards each other just like being a one big family. Third was the conservative
function of the agrarian village in providing a natural social base.
