1.0 PAINTING AND LABELLING

1.1 General

All ductwork, pipe work, valves, fittings, hangers, conduits, and other equipment shall
be painted.

Paints, primers and enamels shall be of the best quality, ready mixed and brought to the
site in unopened containers.

All surfaces or materials and equipment installed shall be suitably painted. All
painting shall be done by experienced tradesmen with first class quality primers and
paints brought to site in the manufacturer’s sealed containers. All coats of paint on any
one item shall be of the same type and manufacture and shall be applied as
recommended by the manufacturers.

No paint work shall be carried out on site without adequate precautions taken to prevent
spoiling the appearance of walls, floors and other equipment. The sub-contractor shall
be responsible to make good any such spoiled surfaces to the entire satisfaction of the
S.O.

Metal surfaces within the building shall be thoroughly cleaned of all grease, rust,
scale, welding flux and the like. The surface shall then be given one chromate type
priming coat and two (2) finishing coats of the specified colour. The finishing coats
shall be full gloss enamel and shall be as smooth and free of brush marks as
possible. All exposed pipes including pipes in enclosures and ceiling voids shall be
painted.

Metal surfaces exposed to weather shall be thoroughly cleaned of all grease, rust, scale,
welding flux and the like. The surface shall then be given one coat of heavy duty anti-
corrosive primer. The second coat shall be an anti-corrosive protecting coating. The
final coat shall be a heavy duty anti-corrosive gloss enamel of the specified colour. For
zinc galvanised, copper or aluminium surfaces, an additional initial coat of etching
primer shall be applied.

Switchboards and control panels shall be supplied on site, factory finished with one
coat of anti-corrosive primer and two coats of full gloss enamel of the specified
colour. The faces shall be suitably protected during installation. Any chips marks or
scratches of the paintwork shall be retouched to the satisfaction of the S.O.

On non-metallic surfaces, the paint used shall be acylic emulsion with mildew
inhibitor additive.

On insulated surfaces, primers and paints used shall be as recommended by the

insulation manufacturers.

1.2 Identification of Pipeline

All pipe works throughout the building shall be provided with identification marking in
accordance to BS 1710 and BS 4800. The bands shall be water-resistant type.

The identification colour for all services pipe shall be applied by wrapping around the
pipe an adhesive band of the identification colour over a length of about 150mm (6”)
depending on the diameter of the pipe.

Self-adhesive band tapes shall be applied to oil and dirt free surfaces only. The
length of the tape should be trimmed to suit the circumference of pipe, allowing for a
13mm minimum overlap and the tape applied by wrapping smoothly around the pipe,
overlapping on the blind side.

The identification colour bands, identification plates, badges or lettering in general

shall be located at intervals of not more than 4.5 \m (15’) on horizontal pipe and every
floor on vertical pipes and shall be placed at all junctions, branches, at both sides of
valves, service appliances, bulkheads, wall penetrations and at any other place
where identification is necessary.

The position of all identification colour bands, supplementary colour bands,

identification plates, badges shall be such that they are readily visible and where
letterings is used it shall be so placed that it can be read without difficulty from a
convenient point of viewing the piping.

All valve body shall be painted with the similar basic identification colour of the pipe
that the fluid conveys. Handwheels GREEN for normally opened and RED for
normally closed.

1.3 Labelling and Direction of Flow

According to the complexity of the installation and to the variety of fluids conveyed, all
equipment and pipe work and like shall be identified and labelled to the satisfaction of
the S.O.

No equipment and pipe work will be accepted without adequate identification and
labelling.

All equipment shall be comprehensively labelled as follows:

(a) Pipe work

The direction of flow shall be indicated by an arrow situated in the proximity of

the basic identification colour band of same adhesive material. Colour shall
be black in white background.

The length of the arrow shall be:

(i) For pipes 50mm (2”) internal diameter and under, the arrow shall be
not less than 75mm (3”).

(iii) For any other closed circuit system where it is necessary to indicate
separately the supply and return pipes, this should be done by the use
of the word SUPPLY or the letter S on the one pipe and the word
RETURN or the letter R on the other.

(b) Equipment

All equipment such as chillers, cooling towers, AHUs fan coil units, fans,
pumps, motors, tank, etc shall be comprehensively labelled with all the
relevant information in block letters.

(c) Valves and Fittings

All valves and fittings larger than 100mm (4”) bore size shall be fitted with
engraved brass indicating the duty. The label shall be mounted on the body or
on top of the valve or fittings and screwed on the hand-wheel whichever is
appropriate.

(d) Electrical Panels

Each item of electrical and control equipment shall be neatly labelled. Labels
are to be in the form of black filled uppercase lettering on an approval white
background and shall be neatly attached by screws to the panel below the
equipment they identify.

All contactors, switches, pushbutton stations, indicators, etc shall be

adequately labelled and identified.

Labelling shall be in black and shall be approximately 10mm (3/8”) high.
