Bridge Building Event Guidelines

Description: Build a lengthy, strong, stable, and reproducible bridge using 50
straws and masking tape.

Number of Participants: 2

Approximate Time: 45 minutes

The Competition: Students will be given 50 plastic straws and 1 meter masking
tape. They are to construct a bridge that spans the greatest possible distance
and be able to support a weight at the center of the bridge.
RULES
● Bridge must be longest to win
● Must hold a chalkboard eraser for 10 seconds to qualify
● Bridge must stand on its own (have supports or “legs”)

TIPS AND TRICKS!
● Remember: The longest bridge doesn’t win.
○ The longest bridge that can hold a chalkboard eraser
wins!
● Remember: Neatness matters!!
○ Tape should be SECURE. You only get one meter, so use it
wisely.
