UNIT 5 MAPS AND GLOBES SOCIAL SCIENCE

Contenido mínimo para estudiar:
WORLD MAPS: Maps show the Earth as flat (los mapas muestran la Tierra como plana).

 LINES OF LATITUDE (líneas de latitud): They go horizontally around the

Earth (Van horizontalmente alrededor de la Tierra).

EQUATOR (Ecuador): It is one latitude line. (Es una línea de latitud).

It divides the Earth into the Northern and the Southern Hemisphere.
(Divide la Tierra en Hemisferio Norte y Hemisferio Sur).
 LINES OF LONGITUDE (líneas de longitud): They go vertically around the
Earth from the North Pole to the South Pole. (Van verticalmente alrededor de la Tierra desde
el Polo Norte hasta el Polo Sur).
 GLOBES (globos terráqueos): Globes show the Earth as a sphere (muestran la Tierra como una
esfera). They are more realistic than maps, because the Earth is a sphere
(son más realistas que los mapas, porque la Tierra es una esfera).

TYPES OF MAPS (tipos de mapas):

 PHYSICAL MAPS (mapas físicos): A physical map shows landforms (muestra

accidentes geográficos). Different colours show different areas of elevation (Los

diferentes colores muestran las diferentes áreas de elevación).
- Brown represents high mountains. (El marrón representa altas montañas).

- Orange represents plateaux. (El naranja representa mesetas).

- Green represents valleys and plains. (El verde representa valles y llanuras).

 POLITICAL MAPS (mapas políticos): A political map shows countries and capital cities with
different colours (muestra países y capitales con diferentes colores).

STREET MAPS (mapas callejeros): It is a map of a town or city (es un mapa de una ciudad pequeña o grande).

 They show the names of streets, roads, parks, hospitals or rivers.

(Muestran los nombres de calles, carreteras, parques, hospitales o ríos).

 Symbols on the map represent important buildings and places

in the city. (Los símbolos del mapa representan edificios y lugares importantes en la ciudad).

 We can see the meaning of these symbols looking at the key.

(Podemos ver el significado de estos símbolos mirando la leyenda o referencia).

THE SCALE OF A MAP (la escala de un mapa):

 “Scale” is another way of saying “size”. (“Escala” es otra forma de decir “tamaño”).

 Roads, parks or streets are scaled down on the map. (Las carreteras, parques o calles están reducidas en el mapa).

 Not all maps have the same scale. (No todos los mapas tienen la misma escala).
