Event Format
A. TOURNAMENT FORMAT:
a. Mens: A single Round Robin will be the prescribed method for 5 teams. Each team
will play every other team once. At the end of the Round Robin, if there is a clear
winner (one team with fewer losses than anyone else), then that team will become
the winner. If there is not a clear winner, then post-round robin tie-breakers will be
employed.
b. Womens: Best of three tournament.
B. BERTHS TO PACIFIC INTERNATIONAL CUP: California has been invited to send 1
women’s team and 1 men’s team to participate in the Pacific International Cup. The team
that wins each division will be awarded this berth.

Event Procedures
A. TEAM MEETINGS: No formal team meetings will occur for this event. These Event
Procedures and the USCA Rules of Curling (Section 1) shall serve as the guidelines for this
event. Please feel free to call or email Sean Franey with any questions, (510-529-9257) or
(seanfraney@bayareacurling.com).
B. PRE-EVENT TEAM PRACTICE
a. Pre-Event Practices will begin at 12:30 PM (Mens on Friday, Womens on Saturday).
b. Each team will have a designated start sheet assigned to them.
c. Three teams at a time will enter the ice house. Each team will have 7 minutes on
each sheet starting with one team on each sheet and rotating to the next sheet.
The team on Sheet A will move to B, B to C, C to OFF1, OFF2 to A, etc. for the
Mens Practice. For the Womens Practice, the team on Sheet A will move to B, B to
C, and C to A. Starting ice assignments will as follows:

Sheet A: Team Wiesen - SFBACC

Sheet B: Team Greenberg - SFBACC
Sheet C: Team Mendoza - Hollywood Curling Club
OFF 1: Team Raju - SFBACC
OFF 2: Team Shook - Hollywood Curling Club

Sheet A: Team Altus - SFBACC

Sheet C: Team Walsh - SFBACC

C. PRE-GAME TEAM PRACTICE

a. For round robin draws, the first team listed on a sheet on the Draw Schedule will
have first practice and ‘red’ rocks. There will be a 10 minute practice for each team
prior to each draw. Practice will be eight minutes in length. A team’s two Last
2018 California PIC Playdown 3

Stone Draw (LSD) shots to determine choice of last stone in the first end in the
ensuing game will take place in the two minutes following the end of each team’s
pre-game practice. Each team’s LSDs will be measured, added together (see rule
D), and used to determine choice of last stone in the first end in the ensuing
game. If a team is late to its assigned practice, the time will be subtracted from
their allotted practice time. If a team misses its practice, a combined LSD of 13 ft.
1.2 in. will be recorded and the other team will be awarded choice of last stone.
• 30 minutes before the start of the game - start of first 10 min. practice
• 20 minutes – second practice
• 10 minutes – The ice will be cleaned after the warm-up period, but not re-
pebbled.
b. The time listed on the draw is the beginning of the first practice.
D. LAST STONE DRAW: Starting in 2015, the USCA incorporated new Last Stone Draw (LSD)
rules. A comprehensive description can be found in the USCA rules, Section IV R16, but
here is the high level overview:
a. At the end of practice, TWO stones will be delivered by two different players on
the team – one clockwise, one counter-clockwise - each thrown towards the home
end. Reminder, the clockwise rock must be thrown first.
b. The two shots will be added together, and this will be your LSD
c. Each player on the team will be required to throw one stone over the course of
the round robin – either clockwise or counter-clockwise.
d. If this minimum requirement is not filled, the LSD will be recorded as 6 ft. 6.6 in.

The new measurement procedure for LSD shots will be employed. From the 2016-2017
USCA Rulebook: “LSD distances will be measured and recorded in the following manner:
(i) All single measurements will be from the tee to the nearest part of the stone,
but the LSD distances will be displayed in inches as the distance from the tee to the
center of the stone.
(ii) The official radius to be used in USCA events is 5.6 inches.
(iii) To any result measured, the radius of 5.6 inches has to be added. This means
that the distance for stones not in the house is 6’1” + 5.6” = 6’6.6”.
(iv) Stones covering the tee will be measured from two locations at the edge of the
4 foot circle. These two locations make a 90 degree angle with the center hole and are 2
feet from the center hole.”

All LSD’s are to be recorded for tabulations of the DSC (Draw Shot Challenge) to be used
later for seeding purposes. Every team is to have a neutral third party measure or verify
measurements of their LSD (use a member of the ice crew or a player from the adjacent
sheet if an official is not available). Failure to record LSD or have one verified will result in
having the LSD recorded as 6’-6.6”.
E. GAME START: Both teams should be at the assigned sheet and ready to start at the
scheduled game time. One minute will be used for “slide time”, after which the game will
2018 California PIC Playdown 4

start. Any team not ready to play 1-15 minutes after the scheduled time shall be penalized
one end and one point, and an additional end and point if the delay is between 15 and 30
minutes. Last stone advantage will be in favor of the non-offending team. A delay of more
than 30 minutes shall constitute a default. In the event that a game is declared a forfeit,
no Last Stone Draw will be recorded for the Draw Shot Challenge for either team, even if
the non-offending team delivered the LSD during the pre-game practice.
F. GAME LENGTH: All round robin games are to be 8 ends. Should the score be tied at the
conclusion of 8 ends, one (1) extra end will be employed as a continuation of the
regulation game. Should the score remain tied at the conclusion of the extra end, each
team will throw one (1) draw to the button with sweeping. Measurements are to follow LSD
measurement guidelines. However, if neither team has a stone that finishes in the house,
or both teams record the same distance, stones will be thrown again until a clear winner
is determined.
G. RULES OF THE GAME: Reference ‘USCA Rules of Curling’. A copy should be on-hand at
the event venue. Note - teams will be required to use approved competition brush
heads.
H. MEASUREMENTS: Measurements should be done and agreed upon by participating
teams. A biter bar and a measuring stick will be made available to this event and are
located in the ice house.

Post Round Robin Rules and Qualifying Procedures

A. TEAM RANKING PROCEDURE: The following criteria (in order) will be used to rank the
teams at the completion of the round robin:
a. Teams will be ranked according to their win/loss record;
b. If two teams are tied, the team that won their round robin game will be ranked
higher;
c. Where three or more teams are tied, the record of the games between the tied
teams shall provide the ranking (should this procedure provide a ranking for some
teams but not all, then a subsequent comparison of the record of the games
between only the remaining teams that are still tied shall determine their ranking);
d. For all remaining teams whose ranking cannot be determined by (a) or (b) or (c),
ranking is determined using the Last Stone Draw (LSD) Average. The LSD
procedures are outlined in another section. The team with the lesser LSD Average
receives the higher ranking. If the LSDs are equal, then the team with the best
non-equal LSD receives the higher ranking. In case all LSDs are equal, the teams
flip a coin.

B. POST ROUND ROBIN ADVANTAGE: First and last stone in the first end of post round
robin games is determined as follows:
2018 California PIC Playdown 5

a. In a tie-break game, the choice of first or second stone in the first end shall be
determined by a last stone draw (LSD) at the completion of each team’s practice.
b. The team that is higher ranked under Rule (A) above shall have choice of practice
time or stone handle color. The team that is ranked lower under Rule (A) above
shall have the choice of whatever their opponent does not choose.

GAME LENGTH: The tie-break game will be 8 ends. No skip’s rocks will be employed in
post round robin games. Teams will continue to play ends until there is a winner.

Men’s Division Qualifying Scenarios

There are nine possible W-L outcomes for this division, as shown in the table below. In Scenarios
1-4 and 8, the Round Robin concludes with one team alone having the best record. This team will
advance to the Pacific International Cup. For the remaining 4 scenarios, a tie-break game is
required after the Round Robin to determine who advances to the Pacific International Cup. For
each of these 4 scenarios, the tie-break shall be executed as indicated below.

A. Scenario 5
a. The three teams with a 3-1 Record cannot be seeded using head-to-head results,
so they must be seeded based on their Round-Robin DSC Average.
b. After they are seeded, the team with the worst DSC Average is eliminated, and
the remaining two teams will play a tie-break game to determine who advances.
c. The winning team of the tie-break game will be the Champion and the other team
will be the Runner-Up.
B. Scenario 6 and 7
a. The two teams will be seeded based on their head-to-head result, and will play a
tie-break game to determine who advances.

will be the Runner-Up.
C. Scenario 9
a. All teams will be ranked according to the ranking procedures, and seeded 1-5.
b. Teams seeded 3, 4, and 5 will be eliminated, and the top two seeds will play a tie-
break game to determine who advances.
