EVART — The Osceola MSU Ex-
tension is offering workshops in
Evart to help caregivers take care
of themselves.
The free workshop began Jan.
26 and continues February 2, 9, 16,
23 and March 2.
Topics include coping and deal-
ing with stress, effective commu-
nication, reducing guilt, anger
and depression, ways to relax,
tough decision making, setting
goals and problem-solving.
The workshop is held 10:30 a.m.
to 12:30 p.m. at the Osceola Com-
mission on Aging, 732 West 7th

pany’s chief executive has been
working with Evart Township
for over three years to approve
the construction of a facility to
extract the mineral, which is a
vital component in fertilizers,
after some of the highest-grade
ore in the world was discovered
there in 2013.
“It would be like a dream for
him,” Executive Vice-president
of production Al Millward said.
If the facility is developed,
Michigan will have one of the
only active potash mines in the
U.S.
That’s because most potash
used in agriculture and industry
in the U.S. is imported, usually
from Canada and Russia, with
only a small portion coming out
of New Mexico.
“But the potash reserve is
deemed strategic, so it’ll give
America some self-reliance,”
Millward said.
More than that, the value of
potash in Michigan is estimated
at $65 billion, which could trig-
ger “explosive” job growth in
Osceola and Mecosta counties,
according to an article in WMU
Magazine written by Pagano.
“Potash is used by everybody,
from farms to gardens,” Mill-
ward said. “But there are serious
requirements in Michigan and
the Midwest for agriculture,
which would mean millions of
dollars generated for the local
community.”
That being said, the market for
potash hasn’t been the best.
Although the price of potash
has risen 4.2 percent from the
year before, prices remain his-
torically low.
Since the potash the deposit

After-school program helps parents plan for the unexpected

REED CITY — There’s
little debate that kids love
snow days, but for parents
trying to figure out what to
do when one happens can
be a struggle.
For many years, Kiddies
Klubhouse has partnered
with GT Norman Elemen-
tary to offer an after-school
program to help parents
with busy work schedules
to better be able to plan for
snow days, early releases,
half-day, and long breaks
by offering a place for chil-
dren to go after school.
“I don’t think parents
really think of the need of
this until all of a sudden
something happens and
then they’re scrambling,
calling us saying ‘hey, we
need this,’” Kiddies Klub-
house Director and Man-
ager Amber Hutchinson
said. “It’s great for those
days when you get called
into work or something
happens. You can contact
the school and just say ’hey
send my kiddo to Kiddies
Klubhouse’ and they will
automatically send them
to our room. So it’s a good
backup plan.”
Hutchinson mentioned
a time when classes at GT
Norman Elementary were
let out early due to a weath-
er-related event, which
left some parents trying to
organize supervising plans
for their children.
“But those parents in the
program automatically
have their kids come to
daycare,” Hutchinson said.
“Like myself, I didn’t have
to worry about because my
kid would be here.”
The program takes place
inside GT Norman Elemen-
tary, so many students
don’t have to leave the
building.
Besides activity after
school, the program be-
gins early in the morning,
before school. Parents can
drop off children as early
as 5:45 a.m. and the pro-
gram keeps its doors open
until 5:30 p.m. most days.

foul smell. The respond-
ing officer didn’t think the
smell was chemical, but
suspects the smell may
be trash coming from the
apartment below and ad-
vised the tenant to contact
the apartment manager
regarding the matter.
