TorkBuster ®

Operating Procedures
165 mm (6-½”)
Operating Procedures
1. Check gauge of prior bit run and note any tight spots on trip. If bit is under
gauge contact United Diamond Operations for special instructions.
2. Make the tool up to the string, ensuring placement of tongs on the fishneck of
the tool. Connections are 4-1/2 API REG. Recommended make-up torque is
2200 daN-m (16,000 ft-lbs).
3. Ensure pipe screen is in place before pumping fluid. Remove pipe screen on
connections or before continuing to bottom.
4. If bridges or tight spots are encountered on the way into the hole, stop and pull
above the tight spot before circulating. Follow United Diamond’s Tight Hole
Procedure.
5. Circulate off-bottom and record the pressure. Bring rotary table to operating
RPM and record the rotary torque.
6. Parameters should be optimized per United Diamond’s Drilling Optimization
Procedure (see over).
7. While drilling, record drilling time, RPM, WOB, flow rate, formation changes,
and any relevant comments on the TorkBuster Run Sheet.
8. If a decrease in ROP or an increase in torque is realized in a consistent formation
for more than 2 meters (6 feet), review United Diamond’s Drilling Optimization
Procedure (see over). If positive changes are observed, continue with the new
parameters. If there are no changes, contact United Diamond Operations.

Tool Characteristics
TorkBuster ® Operating Procedures
At normal circulating rates, the TorkBuster impacts ap-
proximately 1500 times per minute. This impact rate may 165 mm (6-½”)
vary slightly as a result of actual volume being pumped.

The bit is turned by the TorkBuster housing utilizing a cas-

tle-style drive system while torsional impact is transmitted
independently to the bit drive sub. The castle drive sys-
tem also transfers weight to the bit.
.
PI Reg
4-1 /2 A
The castle section isolates the impact energy from travel-
ling back up the drill string. This is accomplished by pro- )
viding some play between the housing and the sub the bit (6 .50”

is connected to. Movement between these two parts is 165
intended and not an indicator of tool performance.

In the event the TorkBuster ceases to function, it becomes
an inert component of the BHA and the bit will still turn,

of every run and whenever a significant formation
change is encountered.
2. Select a mid-range WOB and RPM.

3. Maintain RPM and record ROP over 5 minutes with PI Reg

Running in the Hole

PDC bits are susceptible to damage during tripping in the hole. Sudden impact from encountering ledges or tight spots
could seriously affect bit life and performance by damaging the PDC cutters.

1. Take special care when entering the BOPs. Be sure rams are open.
2. Care must be taken passing through the casing wear bushing if a bent housing motor is used. The bit offset created
by the bent housing can cause interference issues.
3. Take care upon reaching known tight spots or doglegs.
4. If reaming is required, use maximum flow rate and low rotary speed (40 - 60 RPM).
5. If utilizing a downhole motor, consideration should be given to reducing flow rates to lower the bit RPM.
6. Use light WOB while reaming.
7. Avoid high torque while reaming / washing to bottom.
