Form 5

Quiz 1 [ 19th January 2018]

Answers :

5.
(a) - The higher the temperature, the faster the water molecules will evaporate.
- Clothes will dry faster
(i) X + 2HCl  XCl + H2

No of moles of X = 0.5 / 65
= 0.008 mol
From equation,
1 mol X will produce 1 mol H2
So, 0.008 mol X will produce 0.008 mol H2.

Maximum volume = mol X 24 dm3

= 0.008 X 24000 cm3
= 192 cm3

(ii) *Sketch the graph (Exp. II is higher than Exp. I)

(iii) Exp I = 6.0 cm3 s-1
Exp II = 9.6 cm3 s-1
(iv) - Rate of reaction in experiment II is higher than experiment I [compare the rate]
- This is because metal X powder has larger total surface area compared to granulated
metal X [what is the factor? ]
- The frequency of collision between the reacting particles increases [explain why]
- The frequency of effective collision increases [explain]
- The rate of reaction will increase [conclusion] 5 points = 5 marks

6.
(a) Mg + 2HCl  MgCl2 + H2
Answer : 24 cm3
(b)i - Rate of reaction in experiment II is higher than experiment I.
- This is because the temperature of the mixture in experiment II is higher than experiment I
- Kinetic energy of reacting particles in experiment II is higher than experiment I.
- The frequency of collision increases
- The frequency of effective collision will increase
- So, the rate of reaction increases.

ii - Rate of reaction in experiment III is higher than experiment II

- This is because the concentration of H+ ions per unit volume in experiment III is higher
than experiment II. (Sulphuric acid is strong diprotic acid and hydrochloric acid is strong monoprotic
acid).

- The frequency of collision increases.

- The frequency of effective collision will increase.
- Thus, rate of reaction increases.

(c) Describe an experiment :

Materials & apparatus :

Basin, water, burette, retort stand and clamp, hydrochloric acid 0.5 mol dm-3, conical flask,
delivery tube, stopwatch, granulated magnesium , magnesium powder

Procedures :
1. A basin is filled with water.
2. Burette is filled with water and inverted. Clamp the burette by using a retort stand.
3. Initial reading is recorded.
4. 25 cm3 (volume ?) of 0.5 mol dm-3 (concentration?) hydrochloric acid (what?) is
measured and poured (action verb) into a conical flask. (where?).
5. 5 g of granulated magnesium are added into the conical flask.
6. A cork with delivery tube is inserted to the mouth of the conical flask.
7. Stopwatch is started immediately.
8. Burette reading is recorded at 30s intervals.
9. Steps 1-8 are repeated by using the magnesium powder.
